Every year, the disparity between processing power and memory bandwidth continues to expand. This well-established trend has been recognized for several years. Recently, innovative concepts have emerged to address and narrow this growing gap. One notable example of such technology is High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), which is specifically designed to tackle this challenge. HBM has a much higher throughput thanks to their wider data buses, making it an innovative solution for this problem. Due to its configurability and timing requirements, HBM and Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) offer a great combination for prototyping, and the hardware that includes both is slowly gaining popularity and accessibility. In this work, we introduce an open-source simulator capable of accurately predicting and modeling HBM based FPGA systems in a fast-prototyping manner. This design not only simulates an HBM but also a memory controller and a memory interconnect, like the one used by AMD/Xilinx. To prove accuracy, this work shows side-byside comparison between the real hardware and simulated benchmarks of different specific types of memory access patterns, where we measure an overall error of 9.91%. Finally, we compare the performance of some real-life applications where we report an average error of 2.72%.

The present research addresses the complicated challenges of modelling and enhancing processes in mixed-use harbors, focusing on Volos, where the convergence of many activities necessitates customized solutions for effective administration. This research initiates a case-specific investigation in response to the changing marine industry landscape, which is represented by the integration of shipping, recreation, and tourism inside the harbor of Volos. Real-world data from the Volos harbor was gathered using a hybrid methodology that blends mathematical modeling and simulation methodologies to inform the dynamic models. Volos is a microcosm that captures the challenges in establishing a balance between tourist,, commercial ships, and recreational boating. The modeling strategy provides a comprehensive representation of processes by taking interactions and possible conflicts into consideration. It is based on well-established harbor models that have been modified for mixed-use areas. In addition, cutting-edge optimization methods were used, considering environmental impact, traffic control, and resource use. Findings, which were obtained in the particular setting of the Volos harbor, show significant gains in resource allocation and operational efficiency, offering important new information for harbor management.

The Italian foundation for Security and Rights in Cyberspace (SERICS) is in charge of managing the current, broad range, research in a variety of computer security domains, ranging from strictly computer related aspects, such as OS and Virtualization security, to the development of new cryptographic techniques, up to tackling human, social and legal problems related to computer security and privacy. The SERICS project is founded by the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), which in turn receives funding from the EU - NextGenerationEU programme. The SERICS foundation is managing the STRIDE project, to tackle the aforementioned research challenges. In the context of the STRIDE projects, a cascade call was made to tackle specific aspects of the overall reseach challenges. The two-years AQuSDIT project, winner of the aforementioned cascade call, aims to tackle the current open problems in the digital identity realm, with a particular focus on resistance to quantum computer-based attacks, and ledger-based technologies for identification and supply chain tracking. In this context, the research activities at Politecnico di Milano focus on the design of post quantum cryptosystems, and their secure and efficient realization as hardware components, either in the form of full accelerators, or support to existing computing infrastructures. In the following, we will present an overview of the research activities of the 2-year AQuSDIT project, together with an outlook on the first research results which have been obtained by the group of participants from Politecnico di Milano.

Efficient processing architectures for irregular data patterns require vector element addressing with flexible indices. Therefore, state-of-the-art SIMD vector extensions implement gather and scatter instructions for indexed addressing of data in memory. In vertical vector processors, different data is processed sequentially in parallel lanes and can be exchanged via chaining. This paper proposes an extension of such chaining mechanisms in a vertical vector processor architecture (V2PRO) to flexibly chain not only data but also address offsets between vector lanes. The indirect addressing enables vector access patterns with irregular strides for both register file and memory. The extension has a low hardware overhead of +4.8 % lookup tables and +1.8% registers on a Xilinx Ultrascale+ FPGA. A runtime evaluation for two applications from computer vision, namely Deformable Convolutions and point cloud encoding with PointPillars, demonstrates speedups of at least an order of magnitude with the proposed extension.

In modern digital world, the amount of information is increasing dramatically. All this information requires immediate processing which can be done by automated systems. To accelerate processing in automated systems, new models, methods and efficient algorithms for their implementation are needed. The article considers the problem of distributing incoming messages to handlers in an automated system of an organization. The classical assignment problem and known methods of its solution are the mathematical basis for solving the problem. A generalization of the assignment problem with invalid combinations of assignments is considered as a model. A solution algorithm is developed and a software product for solving the described problem in the Python language is implemented. Moreover, numerical experiments are carried out to verify the quality of the developed algorithm and check its feasibility. The applied problem posed in this paper is relevant as in terms of its practical application and as the study of the mathematical model of the assignment problem and methods of its solution. The developed algorithm allows us to calculate the system load and regulate the number of handlers in operation. The obtained results can serve as input parameters for the simulation model of the incoming message processing system which will allow experimenting with the load of such a system.
