In recent decades, there has been a substantial increase in courier, express, and parcel (CEP) shipments. This development is particularly problematic in urban areas, where an increase in first- and last-mile shipments further strains existing infrastructure. To evaluate and identify alternative shipment concepts, freight demand models are used. However, existing models that analyze CEP shipments focus primarily on parcel deliveries to private recipients, although establishments of all kinds, such as retail, account for the major proportion of all parcels on the first mile and a considerable proportion on the last mile. Hence, this study aims to develop an agent-based model that explicitly simulates CEP shipments on the first and last mile induced by establishments in urban environments. A first model prototype is developed and integrated into the existing parcel demand model logiTopp. All integrated modules are based on open data sources and expert interviews with CEP service providers. The framework simulates on a parcel level over a simulation period of one week and is made available as an open-source project. The results highlight the importance of considering CEP shipments to and from establishments;otherwise, transport-related effects are massively underestimated. Moreover, the study reveals the impact of specifics in establishments' CEP shipments, such as carrier contracts, on key tour metrics. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes a FOV-aware, area-based coordination framework for UAV-UGV collaborative surveillance under real-world constraints such as limited battery capacity and road-constrained UGV mobility. Unlike traditional point-based reconnaissance approaches, our method discretizes the surveillance region into realistic grid cells based on UAV camera footprints and guides UAVs to maximize coverage using heading-constrained field-of-view (FOV) planning. A single UGV navigates a predefined fixed route extracted from GeoJSON road data and serves as a mobile charging station with two wireless pads. We formulate the task as a Team Orienteering Problem (TOP) and address it using a structured meta-heuristic algorithm. Key innovations include heading-aware path construction, dynamic reward reinitialization to prevent local stagnation, and tight synchronization with an ILP-based UAV scheduling algorithm that considers operational flight time and charging constraints. UAVs autonomously select their next positions within $\mathrm{a}\pm 5^{\circ}$ heading cone to optimize new area coverage while minimizing redundant overlap. simulation results conducted over the Texas A&M campus demonstrate that our method achieves up to 19% higher area coverage, reduces redundancy by 11.3%, and lowers UAV charging delays compared to point-based and naive area-based baselines. These findings validate the effectiveness of integrating FOV-driven spatial planning with temporal scheduling and adaptive reward modeling, offering a scalable and robust framework for autonomous persistent surveillance missions.

The widespread adoption of Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications has led to the development of the Fog computing paradigm, which enables the seamless integration of mobile-edge and cloud resources. Efficiently allocating and provisioning application tasks in these environments is challenging due to limited resource capacities, IoT mobility, network hierarchy, resource heterogeneity, and stochastic behaviours. In this interconnected world, the demand for more computing devices, especially for delay-sensitive applications, is crucial. In this paper, we propose a community-based fog computing system that leverages a reputation-based resource distribution scheme for efficient task allocation across Fog Nodes (FNs). The system is structured into a three-layer architecture comprising the end layer, fog layer, and cloud layer. The end layer consists of IoT devices that generate tasks for processing. The fog layer implements a reputation mechanism to evaluate the reliability of fog nodes, organizing them into high, medium, and low communities based on performance metrics. Tasks are then allocated to fog nodes based on their reputation and the priority of the tasks. This architecture ensures optimal resource utilization, improves load balancing, and maintains the Quality of Service by dynamically allocating resources based on real-time reputation scores. The simulation results of the proposed algorithm were compared with FCFS, GfE, Detour, and PSG-M algorithms. For 10 to 50 FNs executing 500 tasks, the proposed algorithm demonstrated the following average improvements over PSG-M: 20.36% in makespan, 12.74% in energy consumption, 51.15% in cost, 11.2% in deadline violation, and 2.81% in resource utilization.

Industry 4.0 is transforming manufacturing environments, with robotics being a key technology that enhances various capabilities. The flexibility of Autonomous Mobile Robots has led to the rise of multi-robot systems in industrial settings. Considering the high cost of these robots, it is essential to determine the best fit of number and type before making any major investments. simulation and modeling are valuable decision-support tools, allowing the simulation of different setups to address robot fleet sizing issues. This paper introduces a decision-support framework that combines a fleet manager software stack with the FlexSim simulator, helping decision-makers determine the most suitable mobile robots fleet size tailored to their needs. Unlike previous approaches, the developed solution integrates the same real robot coordination software in both simulation and actual deployment, ensuring that tested scenarios accurately reflect real-world conditions. A case study was conducted to evaluate the framework, involving multiple tasks of loading and unloading materials within a warehouse. Five different scenarios with varying fleet sizes were simulated, and their performances assessed. The analysis concluded that, for the case study under consideration, a fleet of three robots was the most suitable, considering relevant key performance indicators. The results confirmed that the developed solution is an effective alternative for addressing the problem and represents a novel technology with no prior state-of-the-art equivalents.

The "Bench Dragon," or Panlong, is a vibrant traditional folk performance celebrated during major festivals like the Lantern Festival in Zhejiang and Fujian, China, where performers link dozens, sometimes hundreds, of benches together to mimic the shape of a dragon and skillfully maneuver it within tight spaces to create a stunning visual spectacle. To enhance the performance, the Archimedean spiral is used to design the dragon's path, while the cosine theorem simulates its motion, maximizing space efficiency and amplifying visual impact. Additionally, a collision detection algorithm from computational geometry assesses potential risks during sharp turns, and the bisection method refines the spacing of the spirals, minimizing space usage while ensuring smooth, safe movements. By integrating these techniques, an optimized motion model has been developed, allowing performers to execute this culturally rich and visually striking dance safely and efficiently, even in highly constrained spaces.

Aiming at the problem that the different representation patterns generated by the brains of Japanese and Chinese bilinguals when they perform semantic processing tasks have poor decoding effect using traditional machine learning algorithms, this paper analyzes the task-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (tfMRI) data of 15 Japanese and Chinese bilinguals based on deep learning network model for the first time, and further explores the neural mechanism of the brains of Japanese and Chinese bilinguals. The experimental results showed that the model effectively decodes the neural information related to semantic processing, that is, the bilateral superior temporal gyrus (STG), the middle temporal gyrus (MTG), the angular gyrus (AG), the triangular part of the inferior frontal gyrus (PT), the right subfrontal gyrus (PO), and the supramarginal gyrus (SMG). And the left fusiform gyrus (FFG) showed significant activation differences during semantic processing. The results validate the potential of deep learning models in the study of complex brain neural mechanisms, and provide new theoretical support for the neural basis of bilingual semantic processing.

A cyber range, a special type of computer network emulation environment, allows users to evaluate network security technologies. Traditional network emulation methods, such as packet-level discrete event simulation, have difficulty meeting the realistic network security evaluation requirements of a cyber range. Thus, a series of new technologies, such as container-based network emulation and virtualization-based network emulation, have emerged. The key problem in network emulation is the contradiction between fidelity and cost. To solve this problem, considering the respective advantages of mathematical modeling, packet-level discrete event simulation, container, virtualization and physical networks, this paper introduces a multiscale network emulation method based on the above five methods, named MSCVP, to achieve a tradeoff between fidelity and cost. To improve the emulation performance, on the basis of cloud computing platforms, MSCVP focuses on the seamless integration of packet-level discrete event simulation, container, virtualization and physical networks. Given the dynamics of network topologies, MSCVP further integrates mathematical modeling. The experiments show that MSCVP can achieve seamless integration of the above five methods, enabling worm propagation at the million-node level and dynamic network emulation of space–ground integrated information networks. In this study, a thorough hierarchical control structure that supports autonomous decision-making that arises in autonomous systems and robots is proposed. Distinct state and decision/control sets are frequently used to describe high-level decision making in a conventional hierarchical control architecture. To keep up with proficiency, wellbeing, and solace, robotized vehicles generally depend serious areas of strength for on powerful movement arranging calculations. The capacity of Model Prescient Control (MPC) to oversee imperatives and upgrade directions progressively has made it a strong system for movement arranging. To approve the proposed strategy, this exploration utilizes MATLAB recreations to look at various levelled MPC for movement arranging in robotized vehicles. With the low-level regulator guaranteeing exact direction observing and the undeniable level organizer computing a worldwide direction, a two-layer progressive MPC structure is fabricated. The discoveries show how well the progressive MPC handles street ebb and flow, dynamic hindrances, and continuous computational impediments. It is demonstrated that the suggested autonomous decision-making scheme's recursive practicality and stability are ensured by carefully crafting its essential components. An intelligent vehicle's autonomous lane-changing system is developed using the suggested framework. simulation demonstrates that it has a potential capacity to manage a variety of behaviours in complex and dynamic contexts. It is anticipated that the suggested framework will be useful for autonomous decision-making in a variety of robotics along with autonomous technologies where safety as well as optimality are important factors.

Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) workloads are becoming increasingly common in science and engineering. They involve the submission of thousands or even millions of similar tasks with potentially unpredictable runtimes, where the total number is usually not known a priori. A static one-size-fits-all batch script would likely lead to suboptimal scheduling, and native schedulers installed on High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems such as SLURM often struggle to efficiently handle such workloads. In this paper, we introduce a new load balancing approach suitable for UQ workflows. To demonstrate its efficiency in a real-world setting, we focus on the GS2 gyrokinetic plasma turbulence simulator. Individual simulations can be computationally demanding, with runtimes varying significantly—from minutes to hours—depending on the high-dimensional input parameters. Our approach uses the UQ and Modelling Bridge, which offers a language-agnostic interface to a simulation model, combined with HyperQueue which works alongside the native scheduler. In particular, deploying this framework on HPC systems does not require system-level changes. We benchmark our proposed framework against a standalone SLURM approach using GS2 and a Gaussian Process surrogate thereof. Our results demonstrate a reduction in scheduling overhead by up to three orders of magnitude and a maximum reduction of 38% in CPU time for long-running simulations compared to the naïve SLURM approach, while making no assumptions about the job submission patterns inherent to UQ workflows.
