Similar to terrestrial networks where edge computing facilities have already been introduced to decrease the user request response delay and to reduce the backhaul bandwidth consumption, low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation networks can also be benefited by adopting edge computing technologies. The computation tasks generated by ground users can be offloaded to their accessing LEO satellites to enhance network QoS and user QoE. This paper focuses on modeling and simulating computation offloading at LEO constellation network edge. A one-dimensional networking model for edge computing enabled LEO constellation networks is derived, and on that basis, a Monte Carlo simulator is developed from scratch to evaluate system performance. As a case study, three different computation offloading schemes are elaborated and implemented on the simulator. Comparative evaluation experiments have been conducted and the results indicate that, in resource restricted scenarios, allowing computation offloading to the neighbors of the access satellites can considerably reduce the request blocking probability with only slightly increasing the average request response delay. © ICST Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2021.

Estimating the state of the item being tracked is part of the Object Tracking process. Visual tracking is a subject in computer vision that has potential applications in a wide variety of emerging and established technical fields, such as robotics, video surveillance, human-computer interaction, autonomous cars, and sports analytics, to name a few. Therefore, visual trackers are used in mobile robots, in the monitoring of traffic, in the vision of robots, and in the forecasting of accidents. When trying to draw conclusions about the motion of an item based on a set of photographs that have been collected, one of the most challenging challenges is known as “tracking,” and it is one of the most important aspects of this endeavor. The size of an item, its position, and its articulation are the three tasks that provide the greatest challenge in computer vision owing to non-visibility changes. This is because there are certain instances in which the appearance of a visual object is not apparent. The object tracking algorithm is able to function well because of the utilization of a number of characteristics, including the Grayscale feature, Gradient feature, Texture feature, Colour feature, and Fusion of several features. This review article presents a comprehensive assessment in order to learn more about the most current studies in this field and to make suggestions for the conduct of future research. The vast majority of the papers that are being considered are concerned with the identification of events of various kinds, including those that take place in real-time, sports, traffic, natural catastrophes, and other topics. The two issues that have received the most research attention in the field of computer vision are object popularity and the ability to localize an object inside a movie. While the affine T-S fuzzy model offers additional accuracy in terms of describing system dynamics compared to the regular T-S fuzzy model, the problem is that the resulting LMIs for the controller design are structurally infeasible without introducing additional inequalities. In this paper, first, we partition the state space into some cells and use the properties of the cells away from the origin to obtain favourable quadratic inequalities. Then two fuzzy controllers are given based on the partition. In addition, uncertainty in the system is also considered in the affine T-S fuzzy model. Finally, simulation results are provided for the verification of the proposed controllers.

The smart grid (SG) significantly enhances the conventional power grids with information and communication technologies, control decision-making systems, simulation analysis, advanced measurement and sensing. In contrast to conventional power grids, the SG has further benefits in stability, situational awareness, self-healing, information interaction, and renewable energy consumption. But the precise prediction of long-term electric energy consumption remains a challenge. Recently, machine learning (ML), particularly deep learning, has rapidly advanced and has demonstrated outstanding performance in various tasks of the SG fields. The representation capability of ML approaches is considerably enhanced. The SG is a curial framework area, hence ML algorithms including it should be interpretable for improving reliability of the system and increasing user trust. This study develops a new Planet Optimization with Machine Learning Enabled Power Usage Forecasting modeling (POML-PUFM) in SG environment. The presented POML-PUFM technique forecast the utilization of power in the SGs for smart city applications. In the presented POML-PUFM technique, data pre-processing takes place to transform them into compatible format. For forecasting purposes, the POML-PUFM technique employs twin-support vector machine (TWSVM) model. In addition, the study used PO model to adjust the parameter related to the TWSVM method. The prediction performance of the presented POML-PUFM algorithm is examined and the outcomes are examined under several measures. The study verified the improvements of the POML-PUFM technique over other ML models.

The following paper focuses on the dynamic behavior of hermetic squeeze film dampers (HSFD) that utilize fluid-bounding flexible members as a part of the support structure. More specifically, the current paper advances an engineering design modification to the existing HSFD concept, which is aimed at rendering the dynamic force coefficients frequency independent. The paper builds on past HSFD testing and modeling approaches to develop higher fidelity analytical models, which are used to investigate different damper configurations while taking keen interest in the frequency dependency of force coefficients. The analytical study leverages commercially available finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to conduct several fluid-structure-interaction (FSI) simulations of various damper architectures. In addition to the FSI analysis a more computationally efficient reduced order model (ROM) was developed, coupling structural flexibility with the fluid dynamics in the damper. Ultimately, these design tools were used to identify critical design features and configurations needed for constant linear frequency independent force coefficients. The results show a damper configuration with minimal frequency dependency of the stiffness and damping coefficients when incorporating pass through channels in combination with accumulator volumes. The paper also uses the improved design approach of the HSFD to put forth a notional integrated bearing design incorporating the new HSFD concept.

In this paper, the influence of the structural parameters of the projectile on its dynamic characteristics when it penetrates the target plate at high speed is studied. Through theoretical analysis of the dynamic equation of the projectile penetrating the target plate, the overload characteristics of the projectile penetrating the target with different structural parameters are numerically simulated and analyzed using the ANSYS computer modeling and the appropriate grid model and calculation model. The simulation results show that the overload peak value of the missile body decreases with the increase of the length diameter ratio of the missile body and the shape coefficient of the warhead, and the shape coefficient of the warhead also has an impact on the arrival time and duration of the overload peak value. The overload peak value of the missile body can be reduced by increasing the length diameter ratio of the missile body and the shape coefficient of the warhead. The research results can provide a reference for the damage effectiveness evaluation of the structural design of high-speed missile body.

Cardiovascular obstruction could lead to myocardial ischemia and myocardial infarction (MI). MI can be further divided into short-term MI stage (several days) and long-term MI stage (several months) with the development of coronary artery obstruction, and the electrophysiological characteristics in these two MI stages vary greatly. At present, there are no relevant studies on the effects of different infarct areas (size and location) on the initialization and maintenance of reentrant waves in these two MI stages. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the differences in vulnerability to reentry between these two MI stages by computer modeling and simulation. Firstly, single cell models, based on the TP06 model were developed in two different MI stages. And simulation results on single-cells showed that the action potential duration (APD) significantly shortened and the resting potential (RP) elevated in the short-term MI stage, compared with that in the normal condition. However, APD prolonged and RP only changed little in the long-term MI stage. When MI areas in 2D annular ventricular tissues were designed with different lengths, widths and positions, the distribution of the vulnerable window (VW) in these two MI stages was investigated. The simulation results showed that the vulnerability of the two MI stages to the length and position of the infarct areas is the same. That is with the increase of the length, VW gradually increased and reached a constant value when the percentage of the length of the MI area reached 50%. And VW was the largest when the infarct area was close to the inner or outer wall. The vulnerability to the width of the infarct area in these two MI stages is different. In short-term MI, VW was the largest when the width of the infarct area was narrow or wide, while in long-term MI, VW was the largest when the width of the MI area reached half of the width of the ventricular wall. Recent advances in transformer neural network architecture are constrained by their substantial computational demands, which pose significant challenges in edge computing environments. In these limited network connectivity settings, local data processing on resource-limited embedded processors becomes necessary. We designed a hardware custom function unit (CFU) to accelerate neural network computation in edge computing environments. Our circuit functions as a co-processor to an embedded processor and implements new custom instructions compatible with the Reduced Instruction Set computer $5^{\mathrm{t}\mathrm{h}}$ Generation (RISC- V) Open Standard Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). We implemented a systolic array of programmable processing elements (PE) with local cache to offload computation of dense matrix multiplication from the embedded processor. Through simulation, we achieved upto threefold improvement in processing speed for matrix multiply-and-accumulate operation of transformer models with three encoder layers and 256 dimensions. Our design provides a pathway to seamlessly integrate hardware acceleration to enhance inference computation in embedded processors by leveraging on the advantages of open standard ISA. With defined interfaces to a RISC- V processor core, our hardware can be imported as an IP block in programmable or application specific design flows. On the software side, dense matrix multiplications instructions are replaced with our custom instructions while the rest of the instruction compilation and assembly steps can continue to leverage on open-source software tools that convert Python ONNX models to RISC-V instructions.

The purpose of this study is to provide means to physicians for automated and fast recognition of airways diseases. In this work, we mainly focus on measures that can be easily recorded using a spirometer. The signals used in this framework are simulated using the linear bicompartment model of the lungs. This allows us to simulate ventilation under the hypothesis of ventilation at rest (tidal breathing). By changing the resistive and elastic parameters, data samples are realized simulating healthy, fibrosis and asthma breathing. On this synthetic data, different machine learning models are tested and their performance is assessed. All but the Naive bias classifier show accuracy of at least 99%. This represents a proof of concept that Machine Learning can accurately differentiate diseases based on manufactured spirometry data. This paves the way for further developments on the topic, notably testing the model on real data.

Internet of Things consists of several interconnected physical devices through the internet, whereas fog and cloud technologies are hosting tasks responsible for device controlling and management. Such an environment is significantly scalable, and its capacity to handle a large volume of data is proven. For this reason, we propose an IoT architecture featuring necessary technologies to cope with robot orchestration and monitoring. At the fog level, an IoT platform is deployed with all required features to monitor robots remotely. The modeled system in BIP has been wholly instantiated in a real infrastructure after formally checking and simulation against requirements by applying classical code simulation and statistical model checking. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
