Nowadays, cloud systems are increasing their role as cost-effective solutions to deploy applications and services for a wide spectrum of companies and business models. Hence, properly designing and configuring the key parts of the cloud, such as the data center, the collection of offered VMs, and the SLAs, among others, is crucial to obtain the expected income. The main difficulty of this task lies in analyzing and studying the high number of inter-related parameters required to provide a proper cloud configuration. In this work, we focus on the impact of SLAs configuration on the global income, and we propose ISO-Cloud, an Intelligent System for optimizing the overall income of cloud providers, which uses simulation techniques to analyze how the different configurations of SLAs impact the obtained profits. Thus, ISO-Cloud automatically creates different cloud scenarios for certain cloud architecture and, then, potential SLAs configurations to improve the obtained profits are investigated. A thorough experimental evaluation is presented, which shows promising results. In this case, ISO-Cloud significantly improves the overall income in three different SLAs provided by an expert.

Autonomous driving is a highly anticipated approach toward eliminating roadway fatalities. At the same time, the bar for safety is both high and costly to verify. This work considers the role of remotely-located human operators supervising a fleet of autonomous vehicles (AVs) for safety. Such a ‘scalable supervision’ concept was previously proposed to bridge the gap between still-maturing autonomy technology and the pressure to begin commercial offerings of autonomous driving. The present article proposes DISCES, a framework for Data-Informed Safety-Critical Event simulation, to investigate the practicality of this concept from a dynamic network loading standpoint. With a focus on the safety-critical context of AVs merging into mixed-autonomy traffic, vehicular arrival processes at 1,097 highway merge points are modeled using microscopic traffic reconstruction with historical data from interstates across three California counties. Combined with a queuing theoretic model, these results characterize the dynamic supervision requirements and thereby scalability of the teleoperation approach. Across all scenarios we find reductions in operator requirements greater than 99% as compared to in-vehicle supervisors for the time period analyzed. The work also demonstrates two methods for reducing these empirical supervision requirements: (i) the use of cooperative connected AVs — which are shown to produce an average 3.67 orders-of-magnitude system reliability improvement across the scenarios studied — and (ii) aggregation across larger regions.

The application of Agile methodologies to large-scale, safety-critical cyber-physical systems (LS/SC/CPS) has shown significant interest over the last 5 years. Although there has been limited research into each of the individual attributes for de-velopment projects that are large-scale, safety-critical, or cyber-physical systems, there is a scarcity of research when all three attributes exist simultaneously in a development endeavor. This systematic literature review explores the extent of Agile adoption in projects where all three attributes are present. It begins by examining the extent of Agile adoption by domain, identifying the drivers for change, reviewing the challenges encountered, and investigating the augmentations used to address these challenges. The findings indicate that there has been growth in adoption across the medical, aerospace, automotive, and robotics indus-tries, with limited adoption in energy and transportation. Key drivers include speed, adaptability, and cost. Several challenges have been identified, with regulatory/compliance requirements being the most significant. Multiple augmentations to Agile have been applied to overcome the identified challenges, ranging from incorporating safety frameworks and specialized artifacts to leveraging modeling and simulation, as well as reimagining pro-grammatics. This review highlights industry efforts to apply Agile to LS/SC/CPS, while identifying several gaps in the literature. The largest gap is empirical validation in real-world settings. Future research should focus on improving the existing Agile scaling frameworks with guidance and resources to help achieve the benefits of Agile in LS/SC/CPS development while ensuring regulatory and safety compliance.

Based on physical structure and theory of aerodynamics, a mathematical model for differential relay valve (DRV) is established. A simulation model considering internal structure parameters of the valve equipped on a multi-axle heavy vehicle is proposed using the multi-domain simulation platform AMESim, then the static and dynamic performance of the valve are obtained under different simulation conditions. The results show that output pressure of DRV is determined by the larger one between the service brake pressure and the parking brake pressure, and exhibits good dynamical follow-up response performance.

The risk of developing atrial fibrillation increases with age. However, the age-related changes in the electrical function of human atrial cardiomyocytes that may trigger atrial fibrillation are poorly understood. This study examined two possible scenarios of age-related modulation of potassium currents, either $\mathrm{I}_{K1}$ or $\mathrm{I}_{Kr}$ , and their effects on action potential duration (APD). For both scenarios, based on the physiological data, three ageing groups of ionic cell models were created depending on the severity of age-dependent changes in the particular ionic currents: Adult, Senior I, and Senior II. For each of the two considered aging scenarios we were able to reproduce most of aging dependent features of intracellular calcium dynamics and action potentials. However, both hypotheses have their advantages and disadvantages. In the scenario with $\mathrm{I}_{Kr}$ change, the resting membrane potential was age independent, which is consistent with the experimental data. Meanwhile, APDs in all age groups in this scenario were close to the lower limit of the acceptable physiologic range. In contrast, in the scenario with $\mathrm{I}_{K1}$ change, resting potential varied with age, but APDs were closer to the mean values of the physiologic range. Thus, the age-related prolongation of the action potential could be explained by either age-related reduction in $\mathrm{I}_{K1}$ or in $\mathrm{I}_{Kr}$ , but neither scenario fully explains the age-related changes. Perhaps a combined age-related inhibition of $\mathrm{I}_{K1}$ and $\mathrm{I}_{Kr}$ could resolve these discrepancies.

Bio-inspired robotics have received increasing attention in recent years as the biological neuro-muscular interplay achieves unprecedented robust, versatile, and safe movements. However, few biorobots mimic the fine-tuned interplay between neuro-musculoskeletal properties by applying bio-inspired control strategies that exploit the nonlinear biomechanical properties of muscle-like actuators. Here we introduce ATARO, a bio-inspired robotic model of the human arm designed to test biological concepts of motor control which exploit muscle characteristics to generate human-like smooth movements. We demonstrate that ATARO allows to exploit the viscoelastic muscle properties by implementing an intermittent equilibrium point control approach which generates smooth reaching movements from piece-wise constant control commands combined with a model of delayed spinal proprioceptive feedback. We found that arm-reaching movements can be reproduced in good agreement with recorded experimental data from humans. Additionally, we introduced a perturbation on the neuronal level by changing the initial muscle co-contraction without changing the subsequent control parameters. This leads to an overshooting movement, similar to what has been observed in patients with ataxia, a neuronal movement disorder. In the future, ATARO is intended to serve two purposes: (1) to investigate neurological origins of motor control disorders that involve the muscular level and (2) to serve as a testbed for novel technical assistive devices.

Two competing radio access technologies (RATs) are presently available for intelligent transportation systems: Dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) and cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X). Recent FCC rulings allocate 30 MHz worth of spectrum (5.895-5.925 GHz) for both RATs, recommending 20 MHz (2 channels) for C-V2X and 10 MHz (one channel) for DSRC. However, significant debate has ensued on the optimality of such a split, not to mention the fact that it does not consider the possibility of both DSRC and C-V2X coexisting over the same channel. In this paper, we study various performance metrics related to the coexistence of DSRC and C-V2X, considering different configuration parameters under both highway and urban scenarios. Extensive simulations are conducted using WiLabV2XSim, a discrete-event simulation tool for modeling vehicular networks. Our results reveal that, contrary to common wisdom, in highway scenarios it is more efficient to assign two channels for DSRC and one channel for C-V2X. Conversely, in urban scenarios, allocating one channel for DSRC and two channels for C-V2X leads to superior performance. The paper also discusses various challenges for coexistence between DSRC and C-V2X, including interference and differences in the MAC layer designs. Overall, the study provides insights into optimizing the allocation of channels between DSRC and C-V2X to mitigate the effects of coexistence and improve the performance of vehicular communication systems.

The recent rising cost of farm produce in Nigeria could be linked to low rainfall as a result of climate change amongst other factors. This research proposes an autonomous irrigation system from a standalone hybrid renewable energy sources (RESs) for Obafemi Awolowo University Farm, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, to combat hunger and climate change. The study considers solar PV, wind and battery storage system for robust energy generation while upholding the ecological and environmental benefits from these RESs. The proposed off-grid architecture was designed and optimized using HOMER Pro software. The evaluation metrics are levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), and greenhouse gas emission reduction. The modeling parameters of the farm’s load profile are average daily load demand, daily load demand, peak load, and load factor with the corresponding values of 62.91 kWh/d, 2.62 kW, 9.10 kW and 29%, respectively. The results from the simulation revealed that LCOE of wind turbine and PV solar of the study area are 5.60 $/kWh and 0.169 $/kWh, respectively, for an estimated lifecycle of 15 years. Based on the available surface meteorological data of the study area from NASA, the optimized cost result for proposed farm is given to be solar PV and battery storage system.

The (Ca, Sr) AlSiN₃:Eu²⁺(CSASN:Eu) red phosphor is widely used to improve color rendering of high-power phosphor-converted lighting diode (pc-WLED), but it is always unstable under high temperature and high humidity environments. Therefore, the studies on the temperature and humidity resistance of red phosphors and their aging mechanism have become essential to evaluate its reliability in harsh applications. In this paper, the pressure cooker test (PCT) and 85°C&85% RH aging test were carried out for the CSASN:Eu red phosphors. And, its hydrolysis reaction-driven degradation mechanism was simulated and analyzed based on first-principle calculation, in which the optimized adsorption of simplified CaAlSiN 3 (CASN) and H 2 O was simulated based on Density Function Theory (DFT) and the specific aging process was analyzed by the charge density difference and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). The experimental results showed that the photoluminescence performance of CSASN:Eu red phosphor dropped gradually and finally disappeared under PCT aging, and its temperature-dependent degradation kinetics followed the Arrhenius model well. Meanwhile, the simulation results indicate that the CASN, reacted with H 2 O when the H atoms had a tendency to approach N atoms. Both the temperature and humidity could accelerate the hydrolysis reaction rate.

This paper presents an application for industrial induction heating with the ZCS-PDM technology, which is proposed to use a parallel resonant current source inverter. The output power of ZCS-PDM can be controlled by adjusting the pulse density modulation of the square-wave. The inverter has the lowest voltage. The switching loss can be operated under zero-current switching (ZCS). This technique is used to determine the characteristics of materials above normal temperature during the no-load in induction coil. Both circuits are studied and designed using computer modeling. The simulation and experimental results of the circuits may be obtained by adjusting the switch frequency of the buck converter at 16.66 Hz and the inverter at 16.66 kHz. A 300 x 500 x 35 millimeters SS400 steel plate was heated to the appropriate temperature during testing utilizing a 1 kW output power.
