software engineering metrics are used to predict the effort/cost and quality of software applications. Measuring software quality helps us find defects and bugs, which in turn leads us to find software vulnerabilities. In addition, these metrics find the structural and behavioral properties of a software program and hence help find clones/variants of the original software program. New malware programs are commonly written by creating clones/variants of the original malware. software engineering metrics can be effectively used to find such malware. None of the previous research works have employed these metrics for finding Android malicious applications. In this paper, we propose the first such system that uses software engineering metrics for sifting and finding Android malicious applications. We extract these metrics for each reachable method in an Android application. Some of the metrics are, API types, API call in/out, control flow graph size, lines of code, number of branches, and number of invocations. When tested with real Android malware applications our proposed system shows promising results indicating the effectiveness of these features. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper focuses on the under-representation of women computer science faculty and describes an intervention programme called Athena SWAN which has been recently embraced by many Irish third level institutions as part of their efforts to promote gender equity. It details four practice-based initiatives that have been recently implemented within the University of Limerick as part of this programme that have proven effective, outlining the processes undertaken and their practical outcomes. In doing so, it highlights the importance of this intervention process but also draws attention to the need for wider cultural change in supporting gender equity and removing the workplace barriers that impede advancement and retention of women computer science faculty.

In the engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) sector, accurate cost estimations during the tendering phase are crucial for maintaining competitiveness, especially with constrained project schedules and rising labor expenses. Typically, these estimations are labor-intensive, relying heavily on manual evaluations of engineering drawings, which are often shared in PDF format due to intellectual property concerns. This study introduces an innovative solution tailored for the energy industry, utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-primarily deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) techniques-to streamline material quantity estimation, thereby saving engineering time and costs. Built on empirical data from a large EPC company operating in the energy sector, AI-based product development experiences, and academic research, our approach aims to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of engineering work, promoting better decision-making and resource distribution. While our focus is on enhancing a particular activity within the case company using AI, the method's broader applicability in the EPC sector potentially benefits both industry professionals and researchers. This study not only advances a practical application but also provides valuable insights for those seeking to develop AI-driven solutions across various engineering disciplines. © 2024 IEEE.

Transcranial electrical stimulation is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that affects the brain's activity patterns by stimulating specific areas of the cerebral cortex with low-intensity electrical currents that modulate neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission[1]. Traditional transcranial stimulation instruments are expensive, bulky and have poor portability. In this paper, a new type of portable transcranial instrument is developed, using LabVIEW to develop the upper computer system, the output electrical stimulation parameters are controlled by the upper computer, and the lower computer uses the STM32 microcontroller with low power consumption as the main control chip, and the upper computer software displays the parameter information during operation. The experiments show that the instrument is characterized by strong controllability, high portability and stability, and has high practical value. © 2024 IEEE.

Underwater target detection is an important method for detecting marine organisms. However, due to the image occlusion of underwater targets, blurred water quality, poor lighting conditions, small targets, and complex backgrounds, the detection of underwater biological targets has posed significant challenges. In the intricate underwater environment, the conventional feature extraction method has a few drawbacks, including imprecise feature extraction, sluggish detection speed, and inadequate robustness. Consequently, an underwater target detection method based on the enhanced You Only Look Once 7 (YOLOv7) is proposed in this study. The network architecture is reconstructed, and the Deformable Convolutional Network (DCN) modules replace some 3×3 convolutional blocks in the ELAN structure to offset sampling points and reduce background interference. Skip connections and 1× 1 convolutional architecture are added to the DCN module to improve the model’s perception of image details. In addition, Contextual Transformer 3 (COT3) is also incorporated to improve visual performance. Finally, to improve the detection efficiency of small objects, the CIoU loss function is finally replaced by the Normalized Wasserstein Distance (NWD) algorithm. The mAP of DCCN-YOLOv7 on the URPC dataset is 80.4%, according to the experimental results, 2.8% higher than the YOLOv7 network model that is used as a baseline. Furthermore, in contrast to the original YOLOv7 algorithm, the detection speed and accuracy are higher, making it more appropriate for target recognition underwater. © (2024), (international Association of Engineers). Nowadays, several software applications are based on AI algorithms. One of them is the use of Generative Design applications to develop products. This work delves into a practical software application based on AI algorithms to create generative designs for products such as the housing of manual power tools. A case study is used to determine the necessary constraints to design these types of products, and a methodology to create them is described and shared. The results show that the information provided by the software application during the design process is practical and helps develop these types of products;some of this information includes the product mesh representations to be 3D printed, the different design proposals to be selected, and a graphic table where users can compare materials vs. maximum stress. Another result is that the software application is user-friendly and guides the engineers in completing the Generative Design. © 2024 IEEE.

The load balancing strategy in the traditional network architecture system is limited to the limitations of the closed operating system of the network device and cannot effectively meet various communication environments. In SDN, a new network architecture with open programming, the load balancing system architecture of the SDN data center is designed. The traffic classification module is used to distinguish large and small flows. A load balancing mechanism based on the improved ant colony optimization is proposed for the forwarding of large flows. A weighted ECMP load balancing mechanism is used for the forwarding of small flows. The improved ant colony optimization considers the difference in link load status and optimizes the parameters of the ant colony optimization. Through experimental simulation and comparison with traditional load balancing algorithms ECMP and DLB algorithms, the advantages of the optimized ant colony optimization in terms of delay jitter, average link utilization and other indicators are verified. © 2024 SPIE.

The conducted research aims to develop a computer vision system for a small-sized mobile humanoid robot. The decentralization of the servomotor control and the computer vision systems is investigated based on the hardware solution point of view, moreover, the required software level to achieve an efficient matched design is obtained. A computer vision system using the upgraded tiny-You Only Look Once (YOLO) network model is developed to allow recognizing and identifying objects and making decisions on interacting with them, which is recommended for crowd environment. During the research, a concept of a computer vision system was developed, which describes the interaction between the main elements, on the basis of which hardware modules were selected to implement the task. A structure of information interaction between hardware modules is proposed, and a connection scheme is developed, on the basis of which a model of a computer vision system is assembled for research, with the required algorithmic and software for solving the problem. To ensure the high speed of the computer vision system based on the ESP32-CAM module, the neural network was improved by replacing the Visual Geometry Group 16 (VGG-16) network as the base network for extracting the functions of the Single Shot Detector (SSD) network model with the tiny-YOLO lightweight network model, which made it possible to preserve the multidimensional structure of the network model feature graph, resulting in increasing the detection accuracy, while significantly reducing the amount of calculations generated by the network operation, thereby significantly increasing the detection speed, due to a limited set of objects. Finally, a number of experiments were carried out, both in static and dynamic environments, which showed a high accuracy of identifications. © The author(s) 2025.

Microservices are popular because they have the advantages of loose coupling, low cohesion, and small and autonomous compared to monolithic systems. And when it comes to cloud deployment, it also has a natural advantage. As a result, more practitioners today choose to refactor monolithic applications into one or more microservices, each of which contains a set of partitions composed of components that point to some specific function of the original monolith, so that the entire software system can be represented by a graph, each component can be regarded as a node, and the dependencies between components can be regarded as edges between nodes. In recent years, there has been an approach to using graph neural networks(GNN) to help migrate from monoliths to microservices. However, due to the differences in the research field, some developers rely heavily on the source code of the monolithic system as an important basis for migration, but in the software field, the business information of the project also has a strong symbol for different microservices. Therefore, we will use GNN to comprehensively migrate microservices from the perspectives of business information and source code in the project. The findings indicate that our methodology is superior in efficiency compared to the migration of single features extracted solely from source code. © 2024 SPIE.
