Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) represent an alternative channel of communication between the user and the external environment, circumventing the need for traditional neural pathways. The capability to modulate one's own electroencephalogram (electroencephalography (EEG)) signal holds the potential to facilitate specific movements in external devices, thereby restoring or enhancing certain abilities that may have been compromised. In this study, we propose two potential configurations for a four-class, closed loop, real-time Motor Imagery (MI) brain-computer interface (BCI), with the objective of assessing the viability of these endogenous BCIs in accurately directing a cursor on the screen. Twelve healthy participants and one individual with motor disability participated in the experiment, with nine of them successfully transitioning from one-dimensional to two-dimensional cursor control. This outcome suggests that proficient control is achievable with sufficient training time.

This paper considers two problems related to the selection of weighted vertices to cover a set of paths. The first problem is the Vertex Multicut on Trees whose goal is to find the cheapest set of vertices that cut every given pairs of vertices. Another problem is the Tracking Paths problem where one would like to choose a set of "beacons" in the network so that every distinct path from source s to target t can be uniquely identified by an intersection pattern with these beacons. Formally, we present a 2-approximation algorithm for the Weighted Vertex Multicut on Trees based on a standard randomized rounding procedure. This algorithm can be used as a subroutine in a recent approximation algorithm for the Tracking Paths problem by Blazej, Choudhary, Knop, Krist'an, Suchy, and Valla [WAOA'21], improving the approximation ratio from 66 to 6. We note that *** et. al. also independently obtained a similar improvement.

Technology plays a crucial role in people's lives. However, softwareengineering discriminates against individuals from underrepresented groups in several ways, either through algorithms that produce biased outcomes or for the lack of diversity and inclusion in software development environments and academic courses focused on technology. This reality contradicts the history of softwareengineering, which is filled with outstanding scientists from underrepresented groups who changed the world with their contributions to the field. Ada Lovelace, Alan Turing, and Clarence Ellis are only some individuals who made significant breakthroughs in the area and belonged to the population that is so underrepresented in undergraduate courses and the software industry. Previous research discusses that women, LGBTOIA+ people, and non-white individuals are examples of students who often feel unwelcome and ostracized in softwareengineering. However, do they know about the remarkable scientists that came before them and that share background similarities with them? Can we use these scientists as role models to motivate these students to continue pursuing a career in softwareengineering? In this study, we present the preliminary results of a survey with 128 undergraduate students about this topic. Our findings demonstrate that students' knowledge of computer scientists from underrepresented groups is limited. This creates opportunities for investigations on fostering diversity in softwareengineering courses using strategies exploring computerscience's history.

To better understand the nature of the software developer community in Germany, an open data set of 2,837 responses collected through the Stack Overflow Developer Survey was analyzed. Cluster analysis identified four sub-groups that were characterized by significant differences in sociodemographic variables, programming experience and software development specialization: the web developer (25%), the junior developer (26%), the senior developer (39%), and the research developer (10%). Cluster characteristics were associated with differences in experienced community membership, frequency of Stack Overflow visits and participation in Q&A. Senior developers with the highest level of coding experience reported the overall strongest community engagement, while research developers visited Stack Overflow least often. A positive moderate relationship between community membership and community visits and community participation provided additional evidence for the importance of the sense of (virtual) community as a psychological driving factor of community engagement. Together, these findings can contribute to developing more targeted training and community-building measures.

The course on programming methodology is integral to computerscience and softwareengineering education. Knowledge graph has been an interesting topic in recent decades, and knowledge graph has propelled its use in systematically organizing, thoroughly analyzing, and fully leveraging knowledge to become a focal point in teaching research and application, yielding significant progress. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for constructing a knowledge graph tailored to the curriculum. Furthermore, it establishes a comprehensive course knowledge graph, a student capability knowledge graph, and a course resource knowledge graph. Upon this foundation, by leveraging the multi-model database ArangoDB and the visualization framework GraphVIS, a visualized system for a curriculum knowledge graph has been realized. This study aims to offer a reference for the construction and pedagogical approaches of the course, and preliminary applications of the system have received positive feedback.
