This paper introduces a low-cost assistive device to improve the quality of life of individuals with Motor Neuron Disease (MND) using a Brain-computer Interface (BCI). The proposed device allows MND patients to communicate with their environment and execute instructions using a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that translates Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals into computer input. The GUI presents a cube as a visual cue and a set of instructions or operations, enabling the user to control different Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The user may toggle through the instructions by thinking of pulling the cube and may select an instruction by thinking of making the cube disappear. To adapt the system to a real-world scenario, we use a type of transfer learning called domain adaptation. We further investigate by generating four real-world datasets and using five different machine learning schemes, including four domain adaptation strategies. Our experiments show that four out of five learning strategies perform satisfactorily.

Considering the contemporary debate on children's literature, technology and accessibility, the paper investigates the use in the school context of a specific editorial product to understand its potentialities in terms of inclusion, motivation and modifications of the reading experience. A preliminary interview with the publishing house Babalibri has been carried out to gather background information on its project and to understand how the illustrated picture books were translated, thanks also to the use of technology, into audio format, and to figure out the impact it already had, for example on the reading experience of blind people and in the promotion of access to reading during the COVID-19 pandemic. Secondly, an exploratory experiment and investigation have been conducted with preschool children. Results suggest that the project impacted children's motivation and changed their consumption of the reading experience. Controversial outcomes have been produced in terms of inclusion and further experimentation is needed in this field.
