Omnidirectional cameras are commonly used in computer vision and robotics. Their main advantage is their wide field of view which allows them to acquire a 360 degree view of the scene with only one sensor and a single shot. However, few studies have investigated the human detection problem using this kind of cameras. In this paper, we propose to extend the conventional approach for human detection in perspective images and based on Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) apdapted to spherical images is used for this issue. Our approach uses the Riemannian manifolds in order to adapt the gradient in the omnidirectional images. Several experiments have been done using INRIA image database; the results show that adapting detection and image database to the geometry of omnidirectional camera allows a robust detection, and significantly increases the performances.

The real-world images are often inhomogeneous in terms of intensity, color, texture and the shapes. To simulate the Human vision System (HVS), we need to use all these information of the scene simultaneously in our algorithm to segment out an object from the cluttered background. This paper aggregates various color features - gray scale, hue, saturation, luminance, a*, b* and statistical information of the above mentioned features, along with the object shape information to segment a natural scene using Chan-Vese's Vector-Valued level set. In this work, an experimentation is carried out to verify the effects of different features & their combinations with varying proportions on the segmentation process. The work concentrates on the intelligent combination of the various features of the scene for efficient, robust & fast segmentation. DSFT, for distance mapping the level set and to find the shape signatures, provides a faster approach to segment the object and the powerful Chan-Vese's approach guarantees the segmentation within 5 iterations.

In computer vision applications such as person re-identification the optimization of rank list is an important issue. In order to address this issue, a multi-feature fusion based re-ranking technique is proposed. In most of the conventional methods, a long feature vector is formulated from a single modality. Whereas, in the proposed approach, multiple features from the image are extracted and combined into a unified/hybrid vector. Later a joint feature vector is presented after fusion. The Mahalanobis distance is calculated for checking the similarity between the image pairs. A tree based re-ranking algorithm is also proposed that used this combined feature vector and the distance metric. Therefore, by effective use of each feature type, better re-rank can be achieved. We assessed the proposed method on publically available datasets VIPeR and ETHZ. Experimental results demonstrate that the presented approach performs well than exploiting each individual feature.

Shape-based registration methods frequently encounters in the domains of computer vision, image processing and medical imaging. The registration problem is to find an optimal transformation/mapping between sets of rigid or non-rigid objects and to automatically solve for correspondences. In this paper we present a comparison of two different probabilistic methods, the entropy and the growing neural gas network (GNG), as general feature-based registration algorithms. Using entropy shape modelling is performed by connecting the point sets with the highest probability of curvature information, while with GNG the points sets are connected using nearest-neighbour relationships derived from competitive hebbian learning. In order to compare performances we use different levels of shape deformation starting with a simple shape 2D MRI brain ventricles and moving to more complicated shapes like hands. Results both quantitatively and qualitatively are given for both sets.

In this paper, an approach using the spatio-temporal feature and nonnegative locality-constrained linear coding (NLLC) is proposed to detect abnormal events in videos. This approach utilizes position-based spatio-temporal descriptors as the low-level representations of a video clip. Each descriptor consists of the position information of a space-time interest point and an appearance feature vector. To obtain the high-level video representations, the nonnegative locality-constrained linear coding is adopted to encode each spatio-temporal descriptor. Then, the max pooling integrates all NLLC codes of a video clip to produce a feature vector. Finally, the support vector machine (SVM) is employed to classify the feature vector as abnormal or normal. Experimental results on two datasets have demonstrated the promising performance of the proposed approach in the detection of both global and local abnormal events.

Real time person re-identification systems require robust descriptors for useful feature extraction. This paper focuses on a novel descriptor which can efficiently re-identify persons in varied views and change in illumination. The descriptors detect the features by dividing the person image into multiple parts. We use a combination of local and global feature descriptors to form a reliable descriptor. Performance evaluation is done on a benchmarking dataset.

The percentage of false alarms caused by spiders in automated surveillance can range from 20-50%. False alarms increase the workload of surveillance personnel validating the alarms and the maintenance labor cost associated with regular cleaning of webs. We propose a novel, cost effective method to detect false alarms triggered by spiders/webs in surveillance camera networks. This is accomplished by building a spider classifier intended to be a part of the surveillance video processing pipeline. The proposed method uses a feature descriptor obtained by early fusion of blur and texture. The approach is sufficiently efficient for real-time processing and yet comparable in performance with more computationally costly approaches like SIFT with bag of visual words aggregation. The proposed method can eliminate 98.5% of false alarms caused by spiders in a data set supplied by an industry partner, with a false positive rate of less than 1%.

This paper presents a methodology to characterize information about groups of people with the main goal of detecting cultural aspects. Based on tracked pedestrians, groups are detected and characterized. Group information is then used to find out Cultural aspects in videos, based on the Hofstede cultural dimensions theory. The presented work was tested in videos of pedestrian groups recorded in different countries and results seem promising in order to identify cultural aspects in the filmed sequences.

Sparse motion estimation with local optical flow methods is fundamental for a wide range of computer vision application. Classical approaches like the pyramidal Lucas-Kanade method (PLK) or more sophisticated approaches like the Robust Local Optical Flow (RLOF) fail when it comes to environments with illumination changes and/or long-range motions. In this work we focus on these limitations and propose a novel local optical flow framework taking into account an illumination model to deal with varying illumination and a prediction step based on a perspective global motion model to deal with long-range motions. Experimental results shows tremendous improvements, e.g. 56% smaller error for dense motion fields on the KITTI and an about 76% smaller error for sparse motion fields on the Sintel dataset.

In order to realize the leading role of machine vision in intelligent cargo handling of the robot, a fusion method of visual image edge detection based on wavelet transform and mathematical morphology is proposed. That wavelet transform is used for image edge detection exists missing detection, smoothness and weak edge problem. So an improved method needs to be studied, in which a wavelet transform and improved mathematical morphology are respectively used to extract the edge of the original image, and then a fusion of two methods is done to obtain a better edge detection after threshold processing. Comparing the proposed algorithm with several classical edge detection algorithms, the experimental result shows that edge detection method proposed in this paper can effectively reduce the influence of noise and to a certain extent enhance the weakening edge, improve the accuracy of the image detection.
