We propose a multi-frame verification of relaxation based matching of clusters of SIFT keypoints. Mean shift clustering is performed to extract groups of SIFT keypoints which are homogeneous on location and orientation as well as gradient vectors. Relaxation based matching significantly enhances the reliability of correspondence, by preserving the structural consistency over matched clusters. The remnant false matches can be removed by verification by multi-frame verification. The consistency level of correspondence over multiple frames is used to distinguish false positives from true positives. Inter-frame homography is used to measure the deviation of the predicted matching vectors from the measured ones. Experiments on matching with Google street view images in San Francisco show that the proposed method achieves significant improvement when more than four consecutive frames are used for verification.

Comic books are considered a heritage in many countries. The colorful depiction of annotated events has gained an increasing amount of interest over the past decade as the digitization process took over printed media, in addition to the abundance and variety of available data. Several applications have been devised in the field of computer vision and natural language processing to handle comic book pages. However, in this paper, we focus on the connection between the two, specifically, we compare the emotions that color and text separately imply. The theory of color and its effect on one's emotional state can be dated back to the 1800's. The language used in speech balloons is also written to a way to capture the audience's attention and manipulate their emotions. Throughout this paper, the color theory is applied to analyze the pages' emotional implication, and compared to the output of minSVM, a modified SVM classifier that accommodates imbalanced datasets, and a regular SVM, that are trained and implemented on the extracted text of a homegrown database to identify the emotions they convey. Using minSVM, we obtained a 91.26 % accuracy as opposed to an 89.66 % with SVM.

Positioning with vision sensors is gaining its popularity, since it is more accurate, and requires much less bootstrapping and training effort. However, one of the major limitations of the existing solutions is the expensive visual processing pipeline: on resource-constrained mobile devices, it could take up to tens of seconds to process one frame. To address this, we propose a novel learning algorithm, which adaptively discovers the place dependent parameters for visual processing, such as which parts of the scene are more informative, and what kind of visual elements one would expect, as it is employed more and more by the users in a particular setting. With such meta- information, our positioning system dynamically adjust its behaviour, to localise the users with minimum effort. Preliminary results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the cost on visual processing significantly, and achieve sub-metre positioning accuracy.

Lane detection algorithm using a vision sensor or a camera would be more effective for self-driving vehicles to keep in lane, if it is possible to derive a distance ratio between a vehicle and left-right lanes. However, a dangerous situation may occur if the performance of the camera (e.g., frame/sec.) and the real-time speed of the vehicle are not considered properly because of the huge distance difference among frames for a fast moving vehicle with a low-speed camera. In this study, we propose a simple method to anticipate the relative position of the vehicle in the following frame from the current frame image. The expected ratio between a vehicle and the left-right lanes can be obtained by using of the speed of a vehicle and the frame speed of a camera. Experiment results show that less than 5.28% error occurs by the proposed algorithm for various cars and cameras.

Within the last few years, studies on Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have been actively conducted and deployed in modern vehicles; moreover, lane detection and departure warning systems are important modules of ADAS. However, most of the recent papers have only focused on PC-based lane detection modules, and very few concerns have been addressed for the customized embedded board. This paper proposes a real-time lane detection and departure warning technique on a commercial embedded board. The technique is based on Inverse Perspective Mapping (IPM) generating a topview image of the road and Kalman filter tracking removing noise and enhancing accuracy. The experimental results show good performance with an average correct detection rate of 96% under various challenging urban and highway conditions while the processing time takes only 22.76 ms per frame (1280×720) on the embedded board which verifies that the proposed method could be feasible for real-time applications in commercial ADAS products.

AprilTags and other passive fiducial markers require specialized algorithms to detect markers among other features in a natural scene. The vision processing steps generally dominate the computation time of a tag detection pipeline, so even small improvements in marker detection can translate to a faster tag detection system. We incorporated lessons learned from implementing and supporting the AprilTag system into this improved system. This work describes AprilTag 2, a completely redesigned tag detector that improves robustness and efficiency compared to the original AprilTag system. The tag coding scheme is unchanged, retaining the same robustness to false positives inherent to the coding system. The new detector improves performance with higher detection rates, fewer false positives, and lower computational time. Improved performance on small images allows the use of decimated input images, resulting in dramatic gains in detection speed.

Disability of movement has huge impact on the life of physically disable people. Therefore there is need to develop a robot which can be controlled using iris movement. Presently iris controlled robotic systems exist in which iris movement detection is done using MATLAB. This paper proposes a system which aims to design a robot which is controlled by iris movement. The system is designed using Raspberry Pi and Pi Camera Module which make the system cost effective and stand alone. An Open Source computer vision is integrated on Raspberry Pi for real time image processing. A general purpose higher-level language, Python is used for programming the Raspberry Pi. The main idea of the system is recognizing iris from an image of eye and finding out centroid of an iris. In the proposed system command is given to robot depending on centroid position. The command can be FORWARD, LEFT or RIGHT when the iris is at the center, left and right respectively. Command STOP is generated when there is failure of iris detection.

Human action recognition from still image has recently drawn increasing attention in human behavior analysis vision and also poses great challenges due to the huge inter ambiguity and intra variability. Vector of locally aggregated descriptors (VLAD) has achieved state-of-the-art performance in many image classification tasks based on local features. The great success of VLAD is largely due to its high descriptive ability and computational efficiency. In this paper, towards optimal VLAD representations for human action recognition from still images, we improve VLAD by tackling two important issues in VLAD including empty cavity and assignment ambiguity. The empty cavity issue severely compromises the performance of VLAD and has long been overlooked. We investigate the empty cavity and provide an effective solution to deal with it, which largely improves the performance of VLAD; we propose middle level assignments to conquer the assignment ambiguity, which are more reliable and can provide more useful information for realistic activity. We have conducted extensive experiments on two widely-used benchmarks to validate the proposed method for human action recognition from still images. Our method produces competitive performance with state-of-the-art algorithms.

Level set models are widely used in image processing and computer vision for segmentation. In this paper, an improved geometric active contour model is used for the segmentation of abdominal organs in abdomen CT images. The pre-processing of input images was done by anisotropic diffusion filter that effectively preserve the edges. The proposed Distance Regularized Level set Evolution (DRLSE) doesn't requires initialization procedure unlike the conventional level set methods. The distance regularized term is defined using double well potential function such that the level set evolution has unique forward and backward diffusion (FAB) diffusion effect, which is able to maintain a desired shape of the level set function. The algorithms were developed in Matlab 2010 and tested on real time CT data sets.

In the RoboCup Small Size League (SSL), teams of six robots which are autonomously controlled by a team AI play soccer games using an orange colored golf ball. In SSL games, an image processing system (SSL-vision) receives images from four cameras which are installed 4 meters above the field surface, identifies the robots and ball positions. Because the SSL-vision identifies the robots and the ball positions from all camera images, multiple position coordinates are computed in overlapping regions of the images. A shared multi-particle filter was developed to determine the ball position in the overlapping regions, and to minimize the discontinuity of the moving ball locus across the regions. The shared multi-particle filter consists of 4 particle filters and a particle binder estimates the position of the ball from the median point of a combined distribution. In an experimental setup, the shared multi-particle filter smoothly connected two ball locus vectors with a distance of 17 mm. The distances between each sample of the shared multi-particle filter were almost the same as both sets of data from the two cameras.
