In this paper, we propose a novel V-LESS technique for generating the event summaries from monocular videos. We employed Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) as a machine learning approach. First, we analyze the features of the frames, after breaking the video into the frames. Then these frames are used as input to the model which classifies the frames into active frames and inactive frames using LDA. The clusters are formed with the remaining active frames. Finally, the events are obtained using the key-frames with the assumption that a key-frame is either the centroid or the nearest frame to the centroid of an event. The users can easily opt the number of key-frames without incurring the additional computational overhead. Experimental results on two benchmark datasets show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art models on Precision and F-measure. It also successfully abates the video content while holding the interesting information as events. The computational complexity indicates that the V-LESS model meets the requirements for the real-time applications. © 2018, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Optical flow is an important computer vision technique used for motion estimation, object tracking and activity recognition. In this paper, we study the effectiveness of the optical flow feature in recognizing simple actions by using only their RGB visualizations as input to a deep neural network. Feeding only the optical flow visualizations, instead of the raw multimedia content, ensures that only a single motion feature is used as a classification criterion. Here, we deal with human action recognition as a multi-class classification problem. In order to categorize an action, we train an AlexNet-like Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) on Farneback optical flow visualization features of the action videos. We have chosen the KTH data set, which contains six types of action videos, namely walking, running, boxing, jogging, hand-clapping and hand-waving. The accuracy obtained on the test set is 84.72%, and it is naturally less than the state of the art since only a single motion feature is used for classification, but it is high enough to show the effectiveness of optical flow visualization as a good distinguishing criterion for action recognition. The AlexNet-like CNN was trained in Caffe on two NVIDIA Quadro K4200 GPU cards, while the Farneback optical flow features were calculated using OpenCV library. © 2018, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

We present Fast-Downsampling MobileNet (FD-MobileNet), an efficient and accurate network for very limited computational budgets (e.g., 10-140 MFLOPs). Our key idea is applying a fast downsampling strategy to MobileNet framework. In FD-MobileNet, we perform 32x downsampling within 12 layers, only half the layers in the original MobileNet. This design brings three advantages: (i) It remarkably reduces the computational cost. (ii) It increases the information capacity and achieves significant performance improvements. (iii) It is engineering-friendly and provides fast actual inference speed. Experiments on ILSVRC 2012 and PASCAL VOC datasets demonstrate that FD-MobileNet consistently outperforms MobileNet and achieves comparable results with ShuffleNet under different computational budgets, for instance, surpassing MobileNet by 5.5% on the ILSVRC 2012 top-1 accuracy and 8.3% on the VOC 2007 mAP under a complexity of 12 MFLOPs. On an ARM-based device, FD-MobileNet achieves 1.11x inference speedup over MobileNet and 1.82x over ShuffleNet under the same complexity.

Diverse aspect ratios of display devices require adaptation of the image content to be displayed on them. image retargeting pertains to changing the size of an image to adapt to the aspect ratio and spatial resolution of the display device. This is achieved while preserving the salient or important information and thereby reducing visible artifacts in the retargeted image. Seam carving techniques remove or insert least energy seams, one pixel wide paths from top to bottom or left to right of an image, iteratively in order to achieve the target display size. These techniques highly depend on an energy measure of a pixel in an image. Here, we propose a novel technique of defining energy of a pixel, also known as significance map, using object proposal boxes with the probability of objects being present. Object proposal boxes are modeled using the Gaussian kernels. The generation of significance map can be executed on an average in just over a second for a given image. We show that the proposed significance map is able to capture salient region(s) of an image having different textured background and different noise levels. The significance map can be used with an image retargeting algorithm such as seam carving to achieve desired results. Quantitative assessment and comparison with the other state-of-the-art image retargeting techniques show that the proposed energy measure yields the best results for image retargeting using seam carving. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

As reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), of the 7 billion people alive today, an estimated 253 million live with visual impairment that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. From these, 30 million blind or partially sighted persons live in Europe. Over the past years, blindness that is caused by diseases has decreased due to the success of public health actions. However, the number of blind people that are over 60 years old is increasing by 2 million per decade. Unfortunately, all these numbers are estimated to be doubled by 2020. With these facts, is necessary to bring awareness and understanding of the challenges blind people face and help to motivate research into new technology to answer those questions. This document starts to identify the challenges people with visual disabilities face in their life. The problem of navigation and orientation as well the different possibilities to deal with the locomotion situation is also addressed in this paper. It describes the traditional navigational solutions as well other which involves more sophisticated technological devices and their multimodal interfaces. The paper ends with the description of the BlueEyes project (Orvalho, 2016), consisting in a solution to help blind people moving in a city. The first phases of the project are described, and the actual research situations is also slightly explained. © 2018.

This paper presents an embedded video subsystem used to classify the terrain, based on an image from a camera located under the drone, for the purpose of an automatic landing system. Colour and texture features, as well as decision trees and support vector machine classifiers were analysed and evaluated. The algorithm was supported with a shadow detection module. It was evaluated on 100 test cases and achieved over 80% performance. The designed video system was implemented on two embedded platforms - a Zynq SoC (System on Chip - Field Programmable Gate Array + ARM processor system) and a Jetson GPU (Graphic processing Unit + ARM processor system). The performance achieved on both architectures is compared and discussed.

Pole-like structures such as the ones used for traffic lights, traffic signs, utility poles, lampposts or even trees are encountered everywhere in urban scenarios. Because they are robust landmarks, they can help solve problems from the autonomous driving domain, such as localization, mapping, and navigation. In this paper, we propose a method that extracts poles from stereo camera information. First, the intensity images are analyzed to find areas of interest that could contain the desired landmarks. Then, we build U- and V-disparity maps that are used to estimate the position of the poles on the road images. Finally, we cluster the candidate regions of interest, which are then further refined to eliminate outliers. We also use an algorithm for enhancing the illumination of nighttime images, so that we can detect the desired landmarks at different times of the day. Our system is able to extract poles from the same road, on different driving conditions, days, or lanes, it accounts for the possibility of occlusions, and we are able to obtain both a relative and an absolute localization.

Text-image alignment is the task of aligning elements in a text with elements in the image accompanying it. Text-image alignment can be applied, for example, in news articles to improve clarity by explicitly defining the correspondence between regions in the article's image and words or named entities in the article's text. It can also be an useful step in many multimodal applications such as image captioning or image description/comprehension. In this paper we present the LinkPICS: an automatic aligner which combines Natural Language processing (NLP) and computer vision (CV) techniques to explicitly define the correspondence between regions of an image (bounding boxes) and elements (words or named entities) in a text. LinkPICS performs the alignment of people and objects (or animals, vehicles, etc.) as two distinct processes. In the experiments present in this paper, LinkPICS obtained a precision of 97% in the alignment of people and 73% in the alignment of objects in articles in Portuguese from a Brazilian news site.

The image/video processing and computer vision algorithms are crucial mechanisms of many manufacturing, bio-medical, and research-related applications. Recent image processing system offers high definition (HD) images at high frame rates;to process this image data complex computations are required. Conversely, in several applications rapid processing is needed. Central processing Unit (CPU) is insufficient to perform these type of applications, as they accomplish the computations with insufficient speed. To minimize the computational time and increasing the processing speed, algorithms can be implemented on hardware accelerators like field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). While hardware implementation of image processing algorithms designer will face a lot of problems (type of FPGA used, available tools, ways of implementing the algorithms). Along with the implementation of the Sobel edge detection on zynq-702 all programmable FPGA, the above-mentioned concerns are addressed. © 2018 IEEE.

Aesthetic classification of images is an inherently subjective task. There does not exist a validated collection of images/photographs labeled as having good or bad quality from experts. Nowadays, the closest approximation to that is to use databases of photos where a group of users rate each image. Hence, there is not a unique good/bad label but a rating distribution given by users voting. Due to this peculiarity, it is not possible to state the problem of binary aesthetic supervised classification in such a direct mode as other computer vision tasks. Recent literature follows an approach where researchers utilize the average rates from the users for each image, and they establish an arbitrary threshold to determine their class or label. In this way, images above the threshold are considered of good quality, while images below the threshold are seen as bad quality. This paper analyzes current literature, and it reviews those attributes able to represent an image, differentiating into three families: specific, general and deep features. Among those which have been proved more competitive, we have selected a representative subset, being our main goal to establish a clear experimental framework. Finally, once features were selected, we have used them for the full AVA dataset. We have to remark that to perform validation we report not only accuracy values, which is not that informative in this case, but also, metrics able to evaluate classification power within imbalanced datasets. We have conducted a series of experiments so that distinct well-known classifiers are learned from data. Like that, this paper provides what we could consider valuable and valid baseline results for the given problem.
