Hierarchies of plane graphs, called graph pyramids, are used for collecting, storing and analyzing geographical information based on satellite images or other input data. Important for the better understanding of the geographical data, like landscape properties or thematical maps, is the appropriate visualization of graph pyramids and related information. In this paper, we present an interactive visualization tool that supports several coordinated views on graph pyramids, subpyramids, thematical maps, etc. Furthermore, some implementation details and application results are discussed.

We describe the hyperwall, a visualization cluster that uses coordinated visualizations for interactive exploration of multidimensional data and simulations. The system strongly leverages the human eye-brain system with a generous 7/spl times/7 array of flat panel LCD screens powered by a Beowulf cluster. With each screen backed by a workstation class PC, graphic and compute intensive applications can be applied to a broad range of data in parallel. Navigational tools are presented that allow for investigation of high-dimensional data spaces.

visualization interfaces that offer multiple coordinated views on a particular set of data items are useful for navigating and exploring complex information spaces. In application areas like customer relationship management (CRM) or business intelligence (BI), for example, structured customer or company data is often associated to text-based information like telemarketing transcripts or trade press articles. Supporting the analysis of such text information and related structured data is a major challenge for current CRM and BI tools. In this paper, we present a system for visually analyzing these particular information spaces based on a multiple views paradigm. The system brings together views on text similarity, text categories, and associated relational attributes; visual overlay techniques help to keep track of navigation and selection operations in complementary views. The paper sketches an application example and summarizes results from an initial usability evaluation.

There exists a range of computational methods for supporting multicriteria decision-making. We argue that a combination of these methods with visualisation tools promotes more conscious use of the results of the computations and, hence, contribute to making sound, well-substantiated decisions. multiple complementary displays enable a comprehensive analysis of potential decisions. We suggest several coordination mechanisms as particularly suitable for combining the computational and visual tools for decision support. The combined use of the tools is illustrated by examples.

This paper addresses how information visualization can support users in the meta search process and some of the design issues that arise. It describes MetaCrystal and its linked tools that enable users to control how to combine and filter the search results by different search engines. A hierarchy of aggregation is employed to provide users with quick insights into the number of documents found by a specific number or combination of search engines. MetaCrystal enables users to visually perform advanced filtering operations, such as complex Boolean constraints. This paper also discusses how to support tight coupling between the filtering controls and tools that operate at different levels of aggregation.

It is no exaggeration that the quantity and complexity of data still present a formidable challenge to the effective and efficient acquisition of knowledge. On the other hand, results obtained from the application of mining techniques are often in a form that is difficult to be understood by humans who are accustomed to perceiving information through the visual channel. multiple views present a special opportunity that can be leveraged in order to address such challenges and visually support the entire exploration and mining process. This paper acknowledges that special visual opportunity by describing how our visual data mining system, VidaMine, exploits multiple views in supporting the user in the exploration and mining process.

Collections of sound and music of increasing size and diversity are used both by general personal computer users and multimedia designers. Browsing audio collections poses several challenges to the design of effective user interfaces. We present the Sonic Browser, an application for browsing sound collections on personal computers. We describe how a novel user interface with multiple views can be applied to the browsing of audio collections. Finally, we conclude with current trends of our approach for further improvement of the system.

In this paper, we extend our generic "GeoAnalytics" visualization (GAV) component toolkit, based on the principles behind Visual Analytics (VA), to also support time-oriented, geographically referenced and multivariate attribute volumetric data. GAV includes components that support a mixture of technologies from the three data visualization fields: information visualization (InfoVis), geovisualization (GeoVis) and scientific visualization (SciVis). Our research concentrates on visual user interface (VUI) techniques through dynamic and direct data manipulation that permit the visual analytical process to become more interactive and focused. This paper encourages synergies between well-known information- and volume data visualization methods applied in a multiple-linked and coordinated views interface. We address challenges for improved data interaction techniques with volumetric data and the need for immediate response. Varieties of explorative data analysis (EDA) tasks and the possibility to view the information simultaneously from different perspectives and scenarios are discussed. The effectiveness of our geovisual analytics framework is demonstrated in a tailor-made volume data explorer (VDE) application that integrates InfoVis, GeoVis and SciVis visualization methods assembled from GAV components. VDE facilitates dynamic exploration and correlation of temporal ocean space temperature and salinity data supplied in a NetCDF format from NOAA. This real-world phenomenon that corresponds to a huge volumetric data set comprises more than 31 million values for a time period of 12 months in 1994. ©2008 IEEE.

While information visualization technologies have transformed our life and work, designing information visualization systems still faces challenges. Non-expert users or end-users need toolkits that allow for rapid design and prototyping, along with supporting unified data structures suitable for different data types (e.g., tree, network, temporal, and multi-dimensional data), various visualization, interaction tasks. To address these issues, we designed DaisyViz, a model-based user interface toolkit, which enables end-users to rapidly develop domain-specific information visualization applications without traditional programming. DaisyViz is based on a user interface model for information (UIMI), which includes three declarative models: data model, visualization model, and control model. In the development process, a user first constructs a UIMI with interactive visual tools. The results of the UIMI are then parsed to generate a prototype system automatically. In this paper, we discuss the concept of UIMI, describe the architecture of DaisyViz, and show how to use DaisyViz to build an information visualization system. We also present a usability study of DaisyViz we conducted. Our findings indicate DaisyViz is an effective toolkit to help end-users build interactive information visualization systems. Frame-of-reference interaction consists of a unified set of 3D interaction techniques for exploratory navigation of large virtual spaces in nonimmersive environments. It is based on a conceptual framework that considers navigation from a cognitive perspective, as a way of facilitating changes in user attention from one reference frame to another, rather than from the mechanical perspective of moving a camera between different points of interest. All of our techniques link multiple frames of reference in some meaningful way. Some techniques link multiple windows within a zooming environment while others allow seamless changes of user focus between static objects, moving objects, and groups of moving objects. We present our techniques as they are implemented in GeoZui3D, a geographic visualization system for ocean data.
