Most Web search engines use a list-based representation of Web search results, promoting a sequential evaluation of the document surrogates. Commonly, these search engines only display ten document surrogates per page, limiting the users' ability to explore the search results. We have developed two systems to support the visual exploration of Web search results: HotMap and Concept Highlighter. In both of these systems, the search results are provided at two levels of detail: an overview map that provides a compact and abstract representation of the top 100 documents returned by the underlying search engine; and a detail window that shows 20 to 25 documents at a time. In this paper, we discuss how these coordinated views support the visual exploration of Web search results

There is evidence that the highlighting of the same data items in different views will improve the proficiency of knowledge acquisition tasks. Making the connection for the user will reduce the cognitive load of switching from one view to another and allows making observations that would not be possible from the two separate views. However, making the connection between conceptually different views might not be so straightforward if the view types are complex and different enough. We compare two conceptually different information visualization techniques called parallel coordinate plots and the reorderable matrix, and consider how the two representations could be combined. We report an experiment where the participants performed tasks with an application having a reorderable matrix and parallel coordinate views to the same data, with linking and without linking. It was found out that although the view linking initially slows the task performance, it will accelerate learning and it is well received by users.

A timing chain drive transfers motion from the engine's crankshaft to the camshaft that operates the valves. The design process of timing chain drives involves computer simulation of many design variants in order to find an optimum. Most of the simulation results can be represented as families of function graphs (data series). Previously, the analysis of those results was based on static 2D diagrams and animated 3D visualizations. They were suitable for the detailed analysis of a few simulation variants, but not for the comparison of many cases. In this paper we propose a new approach to the analysis based on coordinated linked views and advanced brushing features. Our proposed method supports the interactive analysis of many design variants. We introduce a novel view, called segmented curve view, which can display distributions in families of function graphs. The segmented curve view combines individual function graphs where for a fixed value of the independent variable, a bar extends from minimum to maximum values across the family of function graphs. Each bar is divided into segments (bins) with a color that represents the number of function graphs with the value in that segment. In the case study, we demonstrate that the new view combined with "traditional" views provides a strong support for the interactive visual exploration and analysis of a real world timing chain design problem.

Information system models often consist of multiple views and semi-structured diagrams, which form both a hierarchical and a network structure. These models should be reviewed in order to find possible faults as early as possible in the development process. A conventional CASE tool shows diagrams in separate windows without any visual cues about how diagrams relate to each other. This might result in design errors, omissions, and inconsistencies. We introduce problem areas and potential solutions on how to visualize interrelationships between UML diagrams. Our research prototype enables exploration within the model utilizes intelligent zooming (hides and shows details automatically), and shows how diagrams and objects within them could be related to each other by using visual cues.

Computer supported protocol-based care aims to aid physicians in the treatment process. The main focus of current research is directed towards the formal methods and representations used "behind the scenes" of such systems. This work on the contrary, is situated at the human end of the human-machine chain. We describe the development of interactive visualization methods to support protocol-based care. We provide multiple simultaneous views to cover different aspects of a complex underlying data structure of treatment plans and patient data. The tightly coupled views use visualization methods well-known to domain experts and are designed to facilitate users' tasks. The views are based on the concepts of clinical algorithm maps and Lifelines which have been extended in order to cope with the powerful and expressive plan representation language Asbru. The user-centered development approach applied for these interactive visualization methods has been guided by user input gathered via a user study, design reviews, and prototype evaluations.

Traditional documents are characterized by the paper medium, presented in hierarchical chapter structures, passive for the reader and basically linear readable and normally restricted to static items such as text, imagery and sometimes animations. Integrating existing visualization methods with innovative documentation technology can increase the quality of information in technical documents. We have developed dynamic and interactive documents that incorporate not only text but also the entire interactive data visualisation and navigation process. Authors can produce electronic documents that collaborate and share data, analysis, visualization parameters, information and insight while distributed over the Internet, using intuitive visual navigation techniques. Using multiple coordinated views in a dynamic document will further help the reader to explore complex, multivariate data and discover their relationships. Visual data navigation is provided through interactive 2D and 3D visualisation components based on scalable and customisable, multilayer component architecture with a small footprint suitable for Web distribution. A "Viewer" client-side plug-in, responsible for data interactivity and visualization, is distributed as freeware to allow free distribution of dynamic documents over any network.

Microarray time-course data relate to the recorded activity of thousands of genes, in parallel, over multiple discrete points in time during a biological process. Existing techniques that attempt to support the exploratory analysis of this data rely on static clustering views, interactive clustering views or coordinated clustering and graph views and are limited in that they fail to account for less dominant patterns in the data such as those that involve a subset of genes or a limited interval of the time-course. In this paper, we describe an alternative approach which avoids this limitation by using combined parallel views to present different complementary aspects of the data (i.e. timing, activity and change-in-activity). An example of how the views are combined to reveal significant patterns in the data (including those which cannot be found using clustering based techniques) is described and used to illustrate the benefits of combined parallel views to support exploratory-analysis of this type of data.

A number of researchers have designed visualisation systems that consist of multiple components, through which data and interaction commands flow. Such multistage (hybrid) models can be used to reduce algorithmic complexity, and to open up intermediate stages of algorithms for inspection and steering. In this paper, we present work on aiding the developer and the user of such algorithms through the application of interactive visualisation techniques. We present a set of tools designed to profile the performance of other visualisation components, and provide further functionality for the exploration of high dimensional data sets. Case studies are provided, illustrating the application of the profiling modules to a number of data sets. Through this work we are exploring ways in which techniques traditionally used to prepare for visualisation runs, and to retrospectively analyse them, can find new uses within the context of a multi-component visualisation system.

Manufactured parts always have deviations from their nominal geometry designed in the CAD-system. These deviations are restricted in range by the tolerances the product designer has defined. The synthesis of appropriate tolerances is typically supported by tolerance simulations which return statistic results like distribution curves at defined measurement points, but the related geometry cannot be visualized within the tolerance simulation. Preparation and statistic analysis of toleranced CAD geometry is currently done by experts, not by the product designer himself. We present an approach that allows geometric interpretation of tolerances and their interactions. The method is divided into three steps: multiple non-ideal parts are generated by a simulation. Afterwards they are combined into a single dataset by finding an appropriate transformation which is collision-free with respect to the surrounding assembly and does not violate the defined position tolerances. The resulting volume dataset that represents all non-ideal parts can finally be visualized using techniques known from medical data analysis. The proposed method assists the product developer in tolerance synthesis by providing three-dimensional views of the impact of the defined tolerances, instead of presenting the output of statistic analysis. These views help to define meaningful, coordinated tolerances for new design solutions or to reconsider existing tolerance concepts. Another application of our method is the analysis of huge amounts of measured surface data in quality assurance.
