We present a new paradigm for achieving focus+context visualizations called smooth structural zooming, which varies the level of detail of the data in different areas of the visualization, as opposed to geometrically distorting the visualization or employing rapid zooming techniques. A smooth structural zooming technique for horizontal-vertical (h-v) inclusion tree layouts is described and applied to the domain of the software design process, specifically, design behaviour trees (DBTs). This system has the ability to navigate and explore data too large to be fully displayed, whilst maintaining an approximately constant level of visual complexity, good visualization aesthetics and preservation of the user's mental map through animation. The technique may be readily extended to arbitrary layout styles and algorithms, and to other hierarchical data structures and relational information, such as clustered graphs.

We describe our modifications of the technique of parallel coordinate plot for supporting visual exploration of object classes, in particular, resulting from cluster analysis. We strived at creating a tool that would be suitable for analysis of large datasets. The basic parallel coordinate plot technique with the traditional method for representing classes, multi-coloured brushing, fails to properly convey class-relevant information due to tremendous overlapping of lines. We have applied two general approaches to handling large amounts of data: aggregation and filtering. Thus, information concerning the distribution of characteristics in classes and the entire dataset is shown on parallel coordinates in an aggregated form. This is combined with displaying individual characteristics only for user-selected object subsets.

As mobile computing technologies become common, there is an ever-greater interest in evaluation and analysis of such systems. Evaluating the use of large, multi-user, mobile systems can be a challenging task and can be aided by analysing both system-generated logs of activity and video of user behaviour. Replayer provides a distributed, cross platform toolkit for utilising multiple coordinated visualisations in the analysis and understanding of these heterogeneous forms of data. In this paper we pay particular attention to the methods used to combine recorded media such as video with numerical visualisations such as histograms and time series graphs. We examine in some detail the architecture behind the system, and the techniques used to maintain synchronisation and coordination when interactively brushing components. We demonstrate how Replayer can be used to explore data sets using an array of available visualisations, can focus analysis of video data on the most salient periods and can provide context for every area of the recorded data

Large information or model structures often span many scale levels, and exhibit important features at each scale. Having a coherent and cross-scale understanding of such multiscale structures often requires users to interact with the structures at different scales. While multiple views allow users to see the structures from different locations and at different scales, establishing cross-scale connections between structures in divergent multiple views could be a challenge. This paper proposes a new interactive design, space-scale animation, to visualize the spatial and semantic relationship between structures in different views, and discusses the design and implementation of space-scale animation as a dynamic view transition traversing space and scale. This research not only extends interactive animation techniques by explicitly considering the scale factor, but also argues the necessity to integrate cross-scale semantic information into animation to improve the understanding of complex structures.

multiple-view visualizations are useful for finding patterns in complex data sets, but little research has been done on how they are used. We performed a controlled experiment to study cognitive strategies and context switching by using a combination of visualizations and different task types as independent variables, and collecting qualitative and quantitative data. To collect the data, paper-based tests, logging of participants' interactions, eye-tracking, think-aloud techniques, and video recordings were used. Unlike suggestions in the literature, our results show that when considering dual-view visualizations, the time cost for context switching may not be significant, and similar visualizations may actually cause more interference. Furthermore, orthogonal combinations appear to aid users in recognizing patterns. Focusing attention and analogical reasoning on spatial relationships are important cognitive abilities as well.

Scatterplots in 2D and 3D are very useful tools, but also suffer from a number of problems. Overplotting hides the true number of points that are displayed, and showing point clouds in 3D is problematic both in terms of perception and interaction. We propose a combination of 2D and 3D scatterplots, together with some extensions to overcome these problems. By linking 2D and 3D views, it is possible to interact in 2D and get feedback in 3D. That feedback is also enhanced by depth cues (color and point size) such that the user gets a better depth impression. Histograms in 2D and 3D show additional information about point densities and additional context can be displayed. An example application demonstrates the usefulness of the technique.

In this paper we focus on providing coordinated visual strategies to assist users in performing tasks driven by the presence of temporal and spatial attributes. We introduce temporal visualization techniques targeted at such tasks, and illustrate their use with an application involving a climate classification process. The climate classification requires extensive processing of a database containing daily rain precipitation values collected along over fifty years at several spatial locations in the Sao Paulo state, Brazil. We identify user exploration tasks typically conducted as part of the data preparation required in this process, and then describe how such tasks may be assisted by the multiple visual techniques provided. Issues related to the use of the multiple techniques by an end-user are also discussed.

We describe interactions between kinetic (moving) and static information displays. We have implemented "moxel" kinetic displays in a classic discovery platform with many standard information visualization and analytic tools, and experimented with interactions between them. Moxels, which generalize pixels, are an advanced, moving, form of iconographic display of the kind first developed in static form by Pickett and White (1966). As with the static graphic icons of those early displays, moxels provide a way of mapping together in one image multiple data variables, but with potentially more potency with in-place motion. We show examples of how the two kinds of displays have been integrated, and discuss issues with the integration of dynamic and static visualizations in a single environment. We discuss several interaction paradigms between them including linked brushing, multiple selections, and operations on selected regions

The paper describes a method developed for interactive data visualization and exploration with applications in the automotive industry. The input data set contains a large number of function graphs. Each of the graphs is characterized by a set of basic attributes. The technique that is used for visualization includes two linked views: a map view (or attribute space view), where all function graphs are represented as a point or an icon on the map, and a linked function graph view. The map view provides additional visualization possibilities and allows user interaction. Additional features like brushing in both views, graph management, and related issues like interpolation of the graphs are described.

A visualisation system designed to help users understand and evaluate engineering design problems is described. The data is generated by a genetic algorithm that supplies broad high performing clusters but the quality of these regions of the search space need to be evaluated for robustness and sensitivity by the engineer. A novel clustering technique based on kernel density estimation identifies the clusters in terms of the design variables. Clustering can be performed in alternative coordinate systems such as the principal components that reveal the 'natural' clusters in the data. A number of high dimensional visualisation techniques are included to help understand the data; views are linked by the colour of the clusters. The user is encouraged to search for new data in different parts of the design space. Evaluation of regions for robust engineering design is supported through filtering and a novel 'negative' search mechanism that redefines clusters and confirms whether they satisfy tolerances specified by the user.
