visualization interfaces that offer multiple coordinated views on a particular set of data items are useful for navigating and exploring complex information spaces. In application areas like customer relationship management (CRM) or business intelligence (BI), for example, structured customer or company data is often associated to text-based information like telemarketing transcripts or trade press articles. Supporting the analysis of such text information and related structured data is a major challenge for current CRM and BI tools. In this paper we present a system for visually analyzing these particular information spaces based on a multiple views paradigm. The system brings together views on text similarity, text categories, and associated relational attributes;visual overlay techniques help to keep track of navigation and selection operations in complementary views. The paper sketches an application example and summarizes results from an initial usability evaluation.

In this paper we focus on providing coordinated visual strategies to assist users in performing tasks driven by the presence of temporal and spatial attributes. We introduce temporal visualization techniques targeted at such tasks, and illustrate their use with an application involving a climate classification process. The climate classification requires extensive Processing of a database containing daily rain precipitation values collected along over fifty years at several spatial locations in the Sao Paulo state, Brazil. We identify user exploration tasks typically conducted as part of the data preparation required in this process, and then describe how such tasks may be assisted by the multiple visual techniques provided. Issues related to the use of the multiple techniques by an end-user are also discussed.

There is evidence that the highlighting of the same data items in different views will improve the proficiency of knowledge acquisition tasks. Making the connection for the user will reduce the cognitive load of switching from one view to another and allows making observations that would not be possible from the two separate views. However, making the connection between conceptually different views might not be so straightforward if the view types are complex and different enough. This paper compares two conceptually different information visualization techniques called parallel coordinate plots and the Reorderable Matrix, and considers how the two representations could be combined. We report an experiment where the participants performed tasks with an application having a Reorderable Matrix and parallel coordinates views to the same data, with linking and without linking. It was found out that although the view linking initially slows the task performance, it will accelerate learning and it is well received by the users.

Collections of sound and music of increasing size and diversity are used both by general personal computer users and multimedia designers. Browsing audio collections poses several challenges to the design of effective user interfaces. In this paper, we present the Sonic Browser, an application for browsing sound collections on personal computers. In this paper we describe how a novel user interface with multiple views can be applied to the browsing of audio collections. Finally, we conclude with current trends of our approach for further improvement of the system.

The paper describes a method developed for interactive data visualization and exploration with applications in the automotive industry. The input data set contains a large number of function graphs. Each of the graphs is characterized by a set of basic attributes. The technique that is used for visualization includes two linked views: a map view (or attribute space view), where all function graphs are represented as a point or an icon on the map, and a linked function graph view. The map view provides additional visualization possibilities and allows user interaction. Additional features like brushing in both views, graph management, and related issues like interpolation of the graphs are described.

This paper addresses how information visualization can support users in the meta search process and some of the design issues that arise. It describes MetaCrystal and its linked tools that enable users to control how to combine and filter the search results by different search engines. A hierarchy of aggregation is employed to provide users with quick insights into the number of documents found by a specific number or combination of search engines. MetaCrystal enables users to visually perform advanced filtering operations, such as complex Boolean constraints. This paper also discusses how to support tight coupling between the filtering controls and tools that operate at different levels of aggregation.

Frame-of-reference interaction consists of a unified set of 3D interaction techniques for exploratory navigation of large virtual spaces in non-immersive environments. It is based on a conceptual framework that considers navigation from a cognitive perspective-as a way of facilitating changes in user attention from one reference frame to another-rather than from the mechanical perspective of moving a camera between different points of interest. All of our techniques link multiple frames of. reference in some meaningful wary. Some techniques link multiple windows within a zooming environment while others allow seamless changes of user focus between static objects, moving objects, and groups of moving objects. We present our techniques as they are implemented in GeoZui3D, a geographic visualization system for ocean data.

Large information or model structures often span many scale levels, and exhibit important features at each scale. Having a coherent and cross-scale understanding of such multiscale structures often requires users to interact with the structures at different scales. While multiple views allow users to see the structures from different locations and at different scales, establishing cross-scale connections between structures in divergent multiple views could be a challenge. This paper proposes a new interactive design, space-scale animation, to visualize the spatial and semantic relationship between structures in different views, and discusses the design and implementation of space-scale animation as a dynamic view transition traversing space and scale. This research not only extends interactive animation techniques by explicitly considering the scale factor, but also argues the necessity to integrate cross-scale semantic information into animation to improve the understanding of complex structures.

A timing chain drive transfers motion from the engine's crankshaft to the camshaft that operates the valves. The design process of timing chain drives involves computer simulation of many design variants in order to find an optimum. Most of the simulation results can be represented as families of function graphs (data series). Previously, the analysis of those results was based on static 2D diagrams and animated 3D visualizations. They were suitable for the detailed analysis of a few simulation variants, but not for the comparison of many cases. In this paper we propose a new approach to the analysis based on coordinated linked views and advanced brushing features. Our proposed method supports the interactive analysis of many design variants. We introduce a novel view, called segmented curve view, which can display distributions in families of function graphs. The segmented curve view combines individual function graphs where for a fixed value of the independent variable, a bar extends from minimum to maximum values across the family of function graphs. Each bar is divided into segments (bins) with a color that represents the number of function graphs with the value in that segment. In the case study, we demonstrate that the new view combined with "traditional" views provides a strong support for the interactive visual exploration and analysis of a real world timing chain design problem.

A number of researchers have designed visualisation systems that consist of multiple components, through which data and interaction commands flow. Such multistage (hybrid) models can be used to reduce algorithmic complexity, and to open up intermediate stages of algorithms for inspection and steering. In this paper we present work on aiding the developer and the user of such algorithms through the application of interactive visualisation techniques. We present a set of tools designed to profile the performance of other visualisation components, and provide further functionality for the exploration of high dimensional data sets. Case studies are provided, illustrating the application of the profiling modules to a number of data sets. Through this work we are exploring ways in which techniques traditionally used to prepare for visualisation runs, and to retrospectively analyse them, can find new uses within the context of a multi-component visualisation system.
