We describe interactions between kinetic (moving) and static information displays. We have implemented "moxel" kinetic displays in a classic discovery platform with many standard information visualization and analytic tools, and experimented with interactions between them. Moxels, which generalize pixels, are an advanced, moving, form of iconographic display of the kind first developed in static form by Pickett and White (1966). As with the static graphic icons of those early displays, moxels provide a way of mapping together in one image multiple data variables, but with potentially more potency with in-place motion. We show examples of how the two kinds of displays have been integrated, and discuss issues with the integration of dynamic and static visualizations in a single environment. We discuss several interaction paradigms between them including linked brushing, multiple selections, and operations on selected regions. © 2006 IEEE.

Retail space management is one of the more crucial challenges faced by retailers today with an ever ever-expanding volume of data to which they must refer when making decisions. Problems have emerged that are intractable using traditional means but for which interactive information visualization shows much promise. These problems or tasks are exploratory in nature and use temporal multivariate data. Department stores must maximize and optimize return on allocated retail space. Although product sales are readily available, the missing link for most retailers is a precise understanding of each store's layout in relation to its capacity and performance. This paper introduces a novel approach Visual Space Management (VSM) demonstrated with a multiple-linked view application (VisMT) that explores retail data related to space performance. VisMT integrates familiar information visualization representations and a 3D interactive layout of store floor plans with retail data sources. Parallel coordinates plot serves as a multivariate visual control panel in the coordinated system. Seasonally retail data analysis is performed simultaneously in linked views through time. Visual inquiry methods are supported for conditioned temporal multivariate data.

An mobile computing technologies become more common, there is an ever-greater interest in evaluation and analysis of such systems. Evaluating the use of large, multi-user, mobile systems can he a challenging task and can be aided by analysing both system-generated logs of activity and video of user behaviour. Replayer provides a distributed, cross platform toolkit for utilising multiple coordinated visualisations in the analysis and understanding of these heterogeneous forms of data. In this paper we pay particular attention to the methods used to combine recorded media such as video with numerical visualisations such as histograms and time series graphs. We examine in some detail the architecture behind the system, and the techniques used to maintain synchronisation and coordination when interactively brushing components. We demonstrate how Replayer can be used to explore data sets using an array of available visualisations, can focus analysis of video data on the most salient periods and can provide context for every area of the recorded data. © 2006 IEEE.

Molecular modeling has been a long-standing research area for biologists. However, the existing molecular modeling software lacks strong support for collaborative research. In this paper we describe our effort to develop a collaborative multi-view virtual environment for molecular visualization and modeling. In our virtual environment, the users are able to visualize large molecular structures in real-time, create their own view, or share their view with others in the system. The system allows for individual or coordinated collaborative manipulation of the virtual molecular model. Our virtual environment is integrated with a molecular dynamics simulator, and therefore our system is not merely a visualization tool, but an environment where biologists can collaboratively construct their models and test their hypotheses. © 2005 IEEE.

Scatterplots in 2D and 3D are very useful tools, but also suffer from a number of problems. Overplotting hides the true number of points that are displayed, and showing point clouds in 3D is problematic both in terms of perception and interaction. We propose a combination of 2D and 3D scatterplots, together with some extensions to overcome these problems. By linking 2D and 3D views, it is possible to interact in 2D and get feedback in 3D. That feedback is also enhanced by depth cues (color and point size) such that the user gets a better depth impression. Histograms in 2D and 3D show additional information about point densities and additional context can be displayed. An example application demonstrates the usefulness of the technique.

Complex simulations (in particular, those involving multiple coupled physics) cannot be understood solely using geometry-based visualizations. Such visualizations are necessary in interpreting results and gaining insights into kinematics, however they are insufficient when striving to understand why or how something happened, or when investigating a simulation's dynamic evolution. For multi-physics simulations (e.g. those including solid dynamics with thermal conduction, magnetohydrodynamics, and radiation hydrodynamics) complex interactions between physics and material properties take place within the code which must be investigated in other ways. Drawing on the extensive previous work in view coordination, brushing and linking techniques, and powerful visualization libraries, we have developed Prism, an application targeted for a specific analytic need at Sandia National Laboratories. This multi-view scientific visualization tool tightly integrates geometric and phase space views of simulation data and material models. Working closely with analysts, we have developed this production tool to promote understanding of complex, multi-physics simulations. We discuss the current implementation of Prism, along with specific examples of results obtained by using the tool. © 2005 IEEE.

Information visualization techniques have been successfully used to build visual and interactive analysis of data and data relationships. However, dimensionality, volume and diversity make it difficult for a single technique to completely solve the problem. Information visualization tools that support multiple coordinated views allow the user to better understand the dataset by providing different perspectives based on the same set of data items. These tools support the correlation between data views and the coordinated real-time interaction mechanisms. The goal of this paper is to present the PRISMA information visualization tool that explores the use of multiple coordinated views. PRISMA provides usability, portability and extensibility. Initial usability essays are discussed. © 2007 IEEE.

exploRase is a software tool for the exploratory analysis of systems biology data. Exploration of complex biochemical systems requires the integration of experimental data, such as transcriptomic, proteomic, and metaholomic data, with biochemical networks. The networks specify the relationships between the entities (transcripts, proteins, metabolites) described by the "omics" data and therefore serve as a unifying framework for the analysis. exploRase delegates to the interactive graphics platform GGobi for the display of the experimental data in scatterplots, parallel coordinate plots, barcharts, and more. The plots are interlinked so that brushing an entity in one plot will result in its being brushed in the others. The GGobi plots are linked to a network display, so that corresponding node glyphs in the network are also brushed. exploRase provides a graphical user interface (GUI) with tables containing entity metadata fields, such as biological function. The tables have a color column that is synchronized with the brushing of the GGobi plots and the network view. We demonstrate the usefulness of exploRase by analyzing a transcriptomic dataset that compares a biotin-deficient Arabidopsis mutant with the wildtype. The next steps in development include implictly linking views across datasets via network relationships and integrating exploRase with more diverse view types. © 2006 IEEE.

multiple views of data sets from the same domain can support to discover unforeseen associations among data elements, but requires users to interact with them. The coordination mechanism must relate elements across multiple views. The mapping among data elements are constrained by using data attributes, and such mapping influences on how multiple views are coordinated. We propose the application of ontology to link data elements based on semantic for specific context. Representing the underlying data into ontology, semantic representation to create the mappings can benefit exploratory visualization. In this paper we show how to use ontology on coordinating multiple views, the initial results using document collections are presented and discussed, in comparison with traditional techniques. © 2013 IEEE.
