This paper presents a finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) for a single-phase cascaded H-bridge (CHB) five-level converter operating as a shunt active power filter (SAPF). Using the MPC scheme in a CHB multilevel converter, a high dynamic performance of the system with reduced harmonic distortion is achieved; but, as the number of output voltage levels increases, the method increases the computational load as a result of a significant number of switching states evaluation, for this reason, in this paper a FCS-MPC scheme is proposed to use a reduced number of switching sets for the control of the multilevel converter and to reduce the computational burden. The discrete model of the system, the generation of the compensation signal, as well as the FCS-MPC algorithm are exposed. Furthermore, to regulate the dc-link voltage, a discrete-time fractional order PI λ controller is designed. The simulated results validate the developed control algorithm for the single-phase CHB multilevel converter-based SAPF.
