The ballistocardiogram (BCG) is the record of the reaction forces of the body due to the mechanical action of the heart and the blood flow in the main arteries. Currently the BCG is commonly recorded in longitudinal direction (head-to-foot) and has been proposed as a complementary tool to estimate hemodynamic changes either alone or simultaneous with an additional cardiac signal used as a reference. However, the relationship between the BCG in different directions has not received much attention. In this work, the vertical and horizontal BCG in seated subjects are analyzed and their amplitude and time relationship are explored. Three different analyses have been performed: each separate BCG, between BCG signals, and between both BCG signals and the electrocardiogram. Time analysis of both BCG signals show that the I wave in the horizontal precedes that in the vertical direction, which contrast to the reported previously in the bibliography. The H wave was usually smaller in the horizontal BCG than in the vertical BCG, or even absent in the former. Two-axis BCG, which is easily recorded in seated persons, can be used as a complementary tool to assess the cardiovascular system.

Analog aggregation based federated learning over the air (FLOA) provides high communication efficiency and privacy provisioning in edge computing paradigm. When all edge devices (workers) simultaneously upload their local updates to the parameter server (PS) through the commonly shared time-frequency resources, the PS can only obtains the averaged update rather than the individual local ones. As a result, such a concurrent transmission and aggregation scheme reduces the latency and costs of communication but makes FLOA vulnerable to Byzantine attacks. For the design of Byzantine-resilient FLOA, this paper starts from analyzing the channel inversion (CI) power control mechanism that is widely used in existing FLOA literature. Our theoretical analysis indicates that although CI can achieve good learning performance in the non-attacking scenarios, it fails to work well with limited defensive capability to Byzantine attacks. Then, we propose a novel scheme called the best effort voting (BEV) power control policy, integrated with stochastic gradient descent (SGD). Our proposed BEVSGD improves the robustness of FLOA to Byzantine attacks, by allowing all the workers to send their local updates at their maximum transmit power. Under the strongest-attacking circumstance, we derive the expected convergence rates of FLOA with CI and BEV, respectively. The comparison reveals that our BEV outperforms its counterpart with CI in terms of better convergence behavior, which is verified by experimental simulations.

Public screens can now be found in many places, from shopping malls and airports to museums and restaurants, and even in the outside walls of tall buildings. These public screens usually convey contextual information to the public, and even though some of them support interactivity via touchscreen, the same information is always displayed to all its users regardless of their interests or preferences. On the other hand, mobile devices in general have shown great success by substantially increasing their numbers and their power. As such it is common to start viewing them as tools to achieve previously unattainable capabilities. In this article we engage the idea of using mobile devices to allow multiple users to simultaneously interact with public screens. As a matter of motivation, we consider a few potential applications that range from the marketing to the entertaining industry. We discuss some key characteristics that are desired on a platform that supports this kind of interaction. Finally we present PACMEN, a platform that supports the development of applications oriented to allow multiple users to simultaneously interact with public screens using mobile devices.

This work deals with the problem of balancing control of a rotor-bearing system, which consist of one rotor mounted on two nonorthotropic supports, one of them a traditional journal bearing and the other a journal bearing supported by an arrangement of two radial magneto-rheological (MR) dampers, whose rheological properties depend on the current inputs. The mathematical model of the 6 degrees of freedom rotor-bearing system consists of one disk with unbalance mounted on a shaft and two nonorthotropic supports. For control design purposes a Choi-Lee-Park polynomial model is considered for the two MR dampers, which are quite consistent with the nonlinear and complex hysteresis behavior and also simplifies the implementation issues of the balancing control scheme. The controller for the unbalance response is synthesized using sliding-mode control techniques. Finally, some simulation results are reported to illustrate the dynamic performance of the overall open-loop and closed-loop system.
