Virtual prototyping and co-simulation of mixed analog/ digital embedded systems have emerged as a promising research topic, in particular for designing medical appliances. In the paper, we show how the integration of different, analog and digital, Models of Computation (MoC) within an UML/SysML based environment, can offer an efficient assistance for designing a cyber-physical system in a progressive and systematic manner. For this, we rely on formal verification and abstract simulation on a high abstraction level, and on Multi-MoC virtual prototyping on a lower abstraction level. A realistic echo monitoring system illustrates (i) the method, (ii) the modeling languages, and (iii) the different verification techniques.

The Flight Control computer (FCC) is a crucial component of modern aircraft that is responsible for managing control surfaces and ensuring flight stability. Due to the critical nature of its functions, FCCs are often utilized in redundant configurations. However, developing a FCC is a complex task, as it involves modeling the managed element, operating on potentially noisy and incomplete sensor data, adjusting to disturbances, optimizing resource usage, and more. With the increasing design complexity, verifying the functionality of FCCs is becoming more difficult and time-consuming, requiring scalable and reliable verification solutions. Traditional test methods are unlikely to meet all the expectations for a comprehensive and reliable solution that does not increase cost or create a burden for running tests. One such solution is the Hardware in the Loop (HIL) test technique. HIL test technique involves verifying a controller and its embedded software with a test system that simulates the operational environment of the controller over a model, including relevant signal conditioning hardware. Based on the method, this paper designs the structure and parameters of a HIL simulation test system for the verification of triple redundant flight control computer system integration.

CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) aims to reduce the concentration of carbon in our atmosphere. The international Energy Agency predicts that CCS will need to climb from the current injection of 40MtCO2/year to 1.2GtCO2/year by 2030 for a 2050 Net-Zero Scenario. Fast and accurate simulations are required to plan CCS developments and reduce operational risks. Existing commercial simulators do not suffice: the impact of multiple coupled physical phenomena, the century timescale, and basin-sized models in CCS operations force us to completely take apart and revisit the numerical backbone of subsurface simulation and to build reservoir simulation capabilities tailored to the physical complexity of CCS. Because of the numerical challenges in multiphysics coupled systems, this tool needs to be optimized for mathematical performance and computational portability on advanced computing architectures. Finally, this tool targets applications where private entities, universities, and regulators must work together. It must be accessible to simple computer systems, be open-source, and fully auditable. Here, we present GEOS, an open-source, multiphysics, exascale subsurface simulator. Since 2018, GEOS has been developed as a partnership between a US National Laboratory, university, and private institutions. GEOS solves multiphysics simulations with fully coupled geomechanics and flow using a combination of finite volume and finite element discretization. GEOS leverages scalable linear solvers such as Hypre and preconditioners such as Multigrid reduction. It uses open-source portability layers RAJA and CHAI, guaranteeing scalability on various high-performance computing systems. GEOS is coded in C++17. Finally, because it is open-source and freely accessible, GEOS has been extended by other institutions for other multiphysics problems such as thermal flow or wave propagation. LSIs are embedded in a wide range of products and have become an indispensable part of our lives. As a result, security has become more important than ever. Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs), one of the LSI individual authentication techniques, have attracted attention in recent years. This is because they have potential to provide strong security by generating unique identifiers based on entropy produced during manufacturing. However, PUFs are vulnerable to machine learning (ML) modeling attacks. In this paper, we propose an approach to add an input-decoder to the Magnetic Tunnel Junction (MTJ) based latch PUF circuit to improve resistance against modeling attacks. We evaluated the vulnerability of the proposed MTJ-PUF to modeling attacks using the support vector machine (SVM), linear regression (LR), and multilayer perceptron (MLP). Results demonstrated that the prediction accuracy of each modeling attack is close to the ideal value of 50%, whereas the prediction accuracy of the conventional MTJ-PUF reaches 100% with the same number of training data. This indicates that the proposed input-decoder MTJ-PUF is resistant to ML attacks. Evaluation through simulation demonstrated that the proposed PUF achieved a uniqueness of 50%, uniformity of 49.9%, and reliability of 100%.

Agent-based and individual-based modeling have been widely used to simulate ecological systems. The historical architectures designed to artificial life simulation, namely LIDA and MicroPsy, rely into classical concurrence mechanisms based on threads, shared memory and locks. Although these mechanisms seem to work fine for many multi-agent systems (MAS), notably for those requiring synchronous communication between agents, they present severe restrictions in case of complex asynchronous MAS. In this work, we explore an alternative approach to handle concurrency in distributed asynchronous MAS: the actor model. An actor is a concurrent entity capable of sending, receiving and handling asynchronous messages, and creating new actors. Within this paradigm, there are no shared memory and, hence, no data race conditions. We introduce L2L (a short for: Learn to Live, Live to Learn) architecture, a biological inspired distributed non-deterministic MAS simulation framework, in which the autonomous agents (creatures) are endowed with a functional and minimal nervous system model enabling them to learn from its own experiences and interactions with the two-dimensional world, populated with creatures and nutrients. Both creatures and nutrients are encapsulated in actors. The system as a whole performs as a discrete non-deterministic dynamical system, as well as the creatures themselves. The scalability of this actor-based framework is evaluated showing the system scales up and out - many processes per processor node and in a computer cluster. A second experiment is realized to validate the architecture, consisting of an open-ended foraging simulation with both one or many creatures and hundreds of nutrients. Results from this specific actor-based version are compared to those from a classical concurrency version of the same architecture, showing they are equivalent, despite the fact that the former version scales a lot better. The design constraints of Implantable Medical Devices (IMD), such as the low energy consumption, impose significant challenges to application developers. Software tools that improve the quality of the source code by means of technical debt management and provide energy consumption estimations are useful to IMD application developers for addressing such challenges. In this work, we demonstrate the effectiveness of tools that manage the technical debt and provide energy consumption estimations applied to an IMD application for seizure detection.

The continuous growth of mobile data traffic with strict time requirements calls for the development of sustainable edge content caching solutions. This becomes more prominent in the setting of Information-Centric Networking (ICN) architectures, where different ICNs are leasing caching slices to the available content providers (CPs), who in turn offer their services to the users. In this paper, we introduce a novel symbiotic content caching framework that provides the necessary economic benefits to the ICNs and the CPs to mutualistically collaborate among each other. The corresponding mutualistic interactions among the ICNs and CPs are studied under the prism of two different market-based models, namely the competitive market and oligopoly market models. A game-theoretic approach is followed in order to determine the optimal leasing prices of the ICNs' content caching slices and the CPs' optimal amount of leased caching memory from the ICNs. The performance evaluation of the proposed new symbiotic content caching paradigm is achieved via modeling and simulation, while the benefits and drawbacks of the competitive and oligopoly market modeling approaches are revealed and discussed.

Transpiling Python to Rust for Optimized Performance 1

PYTHON has become the de facto programming language in machine learning and scientific computing, but high performance implementations are challenging to create especially for embedded systems with limited resources. We address the challenge of compiling and optimizing PYTHON source code for a low-level target by introducing RUST as an intermediate source code step. We show that pre-existing PYTHON implementations that depend on optimized libraries, such as NumPy, can be transpiled to RUST semi-automatically, with potential for further automation. We use two representative test cases, Black-Scholes for financial options pricing and robot trajectory optimization. The results show up to 12x speedup and 1.5x less memory use on PC, and the same performance but 4x less memory use on an ARM processor on PYNQ SoC FPGA. We also present a comprehensive list of factors for the process, to show the potential for fully automated transpilation. Our findings are generally applicable and can improve the performance of many PYTHON applications while keeping their easy programmability.
