Specific emitter identification(SEI) plays an increasingly crucial and potential role in both military and civilian scenarios. It refers to a process to discriminate individual emitters from each other by analyzing extracted characteristics from given radio signals. In this paper, we present a novel radiation source identification method named CNNFormer based on a hybrid architecture of Convolutional Neural Network and Transformer, harnessing the strengths of both architectures to enhance feature extraction and sequence modeling. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on simulation datasets, achieving state-of-the-art accuracy in emitter identification. We showcase outstanding performance of our method on simulation datasets, achieving 98.29% three-class identification accuracy the emitter dataset with three devices and 97.60% ten-class identification accuracy on an RF fingerprint dataset with ten XSPR transmitters. Furthermore, our model allows for insight into the key features contributing to identification. This work contributes to enhancing the security and reliability of wireless communication systems.

The WorkingAge project aims at improving the psychophysical condition of workers, with a special focus on ageing subjects. In this context, a Decision Support System, based on a hybrid datadriven/model-driven approach, fed with data coming from environmental and wearable sensors, aims to provide personalised advises to the worker. In this paper we briefly present the WorkingAge project and architecture, and then focus on the decision-making pipeline that, starting from raw data, generates the advises.

The teaching of autonomous vehicle control algorithm design involves the drawing together of multiple topics from both theory and practice. To enable an in-depth knowledge of how the control algorithms of an AV operate, a laboratory-scale approach using ‘lab-in-a-box’ has been developed at Aston University for a project-based module on the Future Vehicle Technologies MSc Course. The aim of the approach is such that students can learn the control engineering fundamentals before moving onto a larger vehicle platform. The adopted approach borrows ideas inspired from model-based design for embedded control. Continuous-time and discrete-time simulation tools are used to design what is in effect a real-time control system. Students are also taught ‘model shop’ skills and computer aided design (CAD), thus allowing the students to build a physical control system to operate in real-time. The focus is on the control of a DC motor, including speed control, temperature control and obstacle avoidance. Initial results presented here are promising, leading to increased levels of student satisfaction and engagement.

Distributed embedded applications (DEAs) are typically implemented on diverse embedded nodes interconnected through communication network(s) to exchange data and control information to achieve the desired functionality. Conventional approaches of utilising a single large-bandwidth link in a distributed system are not efficient in large DEAs owing to diverse requirements and factors like cost, reliability, scalability and criticality, among others. Heterogeneous communication is a promising approach in DEAs, where the diverse nature of underlying protocols (wired/wireless, synchronous/asynchronous, multiple access modes and others) can be leveraged to meet such requirements, in addition to the benefits like aggregated bandwidth and robustness. However, utilising them 'directly' places significant complexity on the application as it needs to dynamically evaluate the channels and utilise different protocol structures for each case. Virtualising the communication channels would present a unified interface to the application by abstracting away low-level details, similar to virtualisation applied in compute architectures. However, unlike architecture virtualisation, virtualising heterogeneous communication particularly for resource-constrained device networks involves unique challenges imposed by the physical (wired/wireless) and logical domains (limited-bandwidth, small payload, protocols, channel access schemes, etc.), which needs to be concurrently evaluated to optimise the communication system. This paper presents a model and an optimal transmission strategy as the proof of concept for deploying heterogeneous communication in DEAs. The model is described at an abstracted level while capturing transmission parameters of multiple channels, which are then optimised to meet the application's communication requirements. The model and the optimisation method are validated through simulation and a practical case study.

As urban traffic pressure continues to increase, existing traffic systems have achieved some success in improving vehicle throughput. However, they commonly face issues such as insufficient precision in visual recognition models, traffic signal control algorithms that neglect pedestrian needs, and excessive reliance on hardware infrastructure, leading to high deployment complexity. To address these challenges, an intelligent traffic system based on an improved YOLOv8 model and Deep Q-Network (DQN) algorithm is proposed. The system consists of a road dataization module and a traffic signal control module. In the road dataization module, the improved YOLOv8 model incorporates an attention mechanism to efficiently recognize vehicle information and uses OpenCV to process traffic images, enabling accurate data modeling. In the traffic signal control module, the enhanced DQN algorithm dynamically adjusts signal durations to balance the needs of pedestrians and vehicles, thereby improving traffic efficiency. Verified through the SUMO simulation platform, this approach demonstrates significant ad-vantages in optimizing traffic flow and throughput. Furthermore, by leveraging algorithmic data analysis of the environment, the system reduces dependency on hardware infrastructure, significantly lowering deployment complexity and showing strong potential for practical application. Additionally, the design of a visualized front-end interface and an embedded display system enhances the system's usability and integrity, validating its feasibility.

An energy-efficient and multi-bit (4b) current-based analog compute in-memory (CIM) architecture is proposed in this paper. In current-based analog CIM schemes, multiplication and-accumulate (MAC) operation is performed on bitline, and resultant output is equivalent to bitline voltage drop $(\Delta \mathbf{V}_{\text{RBL}})$ . However, dependence of $\Delta \mathbf{V}_{\text{RBL}}$ on process, voltage and temperature (PVT) variations and analog non-idealities (ANIs), reduces the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of MAC and degrade the computation accuracy of MAC in analog CIM architecture. An analytical model of $\Delta \mathbf{V}_{\text{RBL}}$ to predict the computation accuracy of MAC in current-based analog CIM architecture through a single SPICE simulation is presented in this paper. The proposed model determines the dynamic range of analog input voltage $(\boldsymbol{V}_{a})$ on the bitline for linear MAC operation for a given technology node. This model also provides a design methodology to predict computation accuracy of MAC and optimize design parameters for current-based analog CIM architecture with the modelling error of 1.1% in SPICE simulations. The implementation of the proposed CIM architecture and model validation are done using a standard 65nm CMOS technology. The proposed architecture achieves $13\times$ energy-efficiency and $2.5\times$ reduction in latency for 4-b multiplication and accumulation (MAC) operation than state-of-the-art. The proposed CIM architecture achieves $13\times$ improvement in Figure of Merit (FoM).

Mechatronics and control education is supported by laboratory intensive assignments that allow students acquire software and hardware skills to solve real world problems. However, COVID-19 force many schools to switch into remote learning complicating the instruction of practical assignments. This paper presents a novel proposal for interactive remote teaching of the laboratory component of the course ME-142: Mechatronics at the University of California, Merced using Digital Twins (DT) and the flipped classroom methodology. Each lab experience is composed by a set of on-demand supporting materials with the foundations of mechatronics simulation using MAT-LAB/Simulink to enhance and adapt the learning experience of the students. Once the students acquire advanced simulation skills, a set of Digital Twin models are provided to the students in order to begin their interaction with virtual representations of real systems for identification, analysis, controller design and validation, which are available online for remote access. By the end of the course, students were able not only to gain valuable experience with mechatronic systems but also interact and build advanced modelling techniques as Digital Twin, contributing to compensate the lack of remote hardware interaction.

System simulation of Memristor Based Computation in Memory Platforms 1

Processors based on the von Neumann architecture show inefficient performance on many emerging data-intensive workloads. Computation in-memory (CIM) tries to address this challenge by performing the computation on the data location. To realize CIM, memristors, that are deployed in a crossbar structure, are a promising candidate. Even though extensive research has been carried out on memristors at device/circuit-level, the implications of their integration as accelerators (CIM units) in a full-blown system are not studied extensively. To study that, we developed a simulator for memristor crossbar and its analog peripheries. This paper evaluates a complete system consisting of a Transport Triggered Architecture (TTA) based host core integrating one or more CIM units. This evaluation is based on a cycle-accurate simulation. For this purpose we designed a simulator which a) includes the memristor crossbar operations as well as its surrounding analog drivers, b) provides the required interface to the co-processing digital elements, and c) presents a micro-instruction set architecture (micro-ISA) that controls and operates both analog and digital components. It is used to assess the effectiveness of the CIM unit in terms of performance, energy, and area in a full-blown system. It is shown, for example, that the EDAP for the deep learning application, LeNet, is reduced by 84% in a full-blown system deploying memristor based crossbars.

High PV systems integration faces distribution networks (DN) with technical issues. However, PVs are inverter- based sources and with active power curtailment (APC) and reactive power control (RPC) can provide ancillary services for distribution system operators (DSOs) and participate as problem/solution principle. This paper proposes an optimal power flow (OPF)-based model for improving voltages and reducing losses by using PV inverter APC and RPC strategies. The proposed optimization model is presented as nonlinear programming (NLP). For solving this optimization problem without approximations, a co-simulation of OpenDSS power system analysis software and PyGMO package with embedded computational intelligence (CI) optimization methods is used. Several case studies are carried out over the IEEE European low-voltage test feeder (LVTF). Regardless of which strategy is applied, the obtained results show that the proposed model improves technical conditions in PV-rich DN and illustrate PV potential in providing ancillary services to DSO.
