The mathematical concept of chaos was introduced by Edward Lorenz in the early 1960s while attempting to represent atmospheric convection through a two-dimensional fluid flow with an imposed temperature difference in the vertical direction. Since then, chaotic dynamical systems are accepted as the foundation of the meteorological sciences and represent an indispensable testbed for weather and climate forecasting tools. Operational weather forecasting platforms rely on costly partial differential equations (PDE)-based models that run continuously on high performance computing architectures. Machine learning (ML)-based low-dimensional surrogate models can be viewed as a cost-effective solution for such high-fidelity simulation platforms. In this work, we propose an ML method based on Reservoir Computing- Echo State Neural Network (RC-ESN) to accurately predict evolutionary states of chaotic systems. We start with the baseline Lorenz-63 and 96 systems and show that RC-ESN is extremely effective in consistently predicting time series using Pearson's cross correlation similarity measure. RC-ESN can accurately forecast Lorenz systems for many Lyapunov time units into the future. In a practical numerical example, we applied RC-ESN combined with space-only proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) to build a reduced order model (ROM) that produces sequential short-term forecasts of pollution dispersion over the continental USA region. We use GEOS-CF simulated data to assess our RC-ESN ROM. Numerical experiments show reasonable results for such a highly complex atmospheric pollution system.

embedded systems are commonly built upon heterogeneous digital and analog integrated circuits, including sensors and actuators. Model-driven approaches for designing software and hardware are generally limited to the digital parts of systems. In the present paper, we adopt a global view on the extensions made to an integrated modeling and simulation tool, TTool. In this tool, the verification and virtual prototyping of embedded systems is described at different abstraction levels and extended in order to handle analog/mixed-signal systems. An extensive case study spans these levels and illustrates the usefulness of our approach.

Cooperative automated vehicles must perceive the environment accurately and have precise information about the leading vehicle's pose and velocity. This paper presents a SysML-based approach to design and develop a stereo vision-based perception system in an urban platooning scenario. It detects objects, lane markers, and free space in front of the follower vehicle using deep neural networks and computes the lead vehicle's relative pose and velocity. The relative pose is estimated using a geometric model-based pose estimation algorithm. The relative velocity is estimated from the change in pose within a known time. The lead vehicle's relative pose and velocity control the follower vehicle to follow the lead vehicle autonomously. Also, it displays the lead vehicle's pose and velocity information in a meaningful way on the in-vehicle display of the follower vehicle. The proposed system uses a custom-built automotive-grade stereo camera as input and runs on an automotive-grade embedded platform. It is tested on a simulation and prototype cooperative automated vehicle research platform. The evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed system operates in real-time and is suitable for cooperative automated vehicles.

Health has recently faced many challenges, including improving a healthy environment and reducing human life's dangers and economic crises. The last pandemic COVID-19 had badly affected survivor sectors with infection and lockdown exigence. Scientists proposed several solutions to reduce the negative impact of a such pandemic by proposing systems for earlier detection of viruses. The use of metamaterials as an emerging technology in the biosensors field allows a high accuracy. This paper presents a method for detecting and capturing airborne viruses using metasurface technology. The goal is to develop a system that can identify and capture these viruses using FET sensors. The accuracy of the detection is tied to the concentration of aerosols. The model proposes a guided flow of aerosols that positively impacts the detection of viruses through the FET biosensor. The simulation results based on Concentration and airflow velocity delays prove the proposed model's performance.

Three-terminal solar cells exploiting the heterojunction bipolar transistor structure combine the advantages of independently connected tandem cell architectures - suboptimal gaps, high resilence to spectral variations and to radiation damage - with a simple monolithic structure, since they do not need tunnel junctions. In this work, we study this novel device concept by means of optoelectronic simulations based on realistic material parameters, and discuss the solar cell operation and its design optimization.

Cyber-Physical System is a complex system that integrates perception, computing, communication and control to construct the mapping, interaction and coordination of human, machine, object, environment and information in cyber and physical space. In transportation cyber-physical system, the topology of road network is extremely complex, vehicles are widely distributed, and information changes rapidly. With the development of embedded systems and communication technology, interactions between vehicles and other devices are becoming faster and more reliable, making dynamic route guidance possible. This paper proposes a dynamic route guidance method named Q-learning Rerouting (QRR), which updates Q-value table by periodically acquiring real-time average travel time as penalty of actions and guides vehicles according to maximized value function strategy. Two common scenarios in intelligent transportation are built: congestion caused by vehicle failure and speed limit on waterlogged roads. Compared with static route guidance, QRR makes full use of road capacity and allows vehicles move faster. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

During the development of Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) safety and security are major concerns to be considered as it has been established by various literature. Moreover, these concerns must be included early on during the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC). In this work, we focus on the design-phase of the SDLC to assist the engineers in conducting design-space exploration of the system hardware architecture w.r.t to both safety and security concerns. In this way, the engineers may perform simulations to find a set of quasi-optimal solutions before developing an actual physical prototype. To achieve this, our tooled method builds on our previous work [11] and supports a multi-concern analysis by leveraging Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques such as SysML modeling along with the transformation of SysML models into representations which are finally optimized via constraint solvers. Overall, the method and framework shall support the design of the system architecture from a repository of components based on possible configuration alternatives, which satisfy the system objectives such as reliability and cost. Such functions can help to evaluate the effects of integrating safety and security features thus showing their interplay. The overall approach is illustrated via an automotive CPS case study. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) is recurrently adopted for embedded systems in order to simplify the design and verification activities. Particularly, it enables the modeling of system design at higher abstraction level. Subsequently, model transformation process is executed to automatically generate Register Transfer Level (RTL) code in order to accomplish verification through simulation. In this context, the test benches required for the realistic simulation of RTL code are usually developed at lower abstraction level e.g. SystemVerilog etc. This creates a significant gap between design and its verification as the concepts of MBSE are used to develop the system design and corresponding test benches are implemented at lower abstraction level separately. To abridge this gap, a novel meta-model for the modeling of Universal Verification Methodology (UVM) test benches is proposed in this article. Particularly, the proposed meta-model is based on the several UVM concepts like scoreboard, monitor, agent, driver etc. in order to allow the simultaneous modeling of test benches along with system design. This provides the foundation to concurrently generate both RTL code and UVM test benches implementations from the models through transformation process. Subsequently, the simulation for design verification can be done instantaneously in existing UVM based simulator such as QuestaSIM. The practicability of the proposed meta-model is validated through memory model case study. © 2020 ACM.

Design of a real-time face detection architecture for heterogeneous systems-on-chips

Object detection represents one of the most important and challenging task in computer vision applications. Boosting-based approaches deal with computational intensive operations and they involve several sequential tasks that make very difficult developing hardware implementations with high parallelism level. This work presents a new hardware architecture able to perform object detection based on a cascade classifier in real-time and resource-constrained systems. As case study, the proposed architecture has been tailored to accomplish the face detection task and integrated within a complete heterogeneous embedded system based on a Xilinx Zynq-7000 FPGA-based System-on-Chip. Experimental results show that, thanks to the proposed parallel processing scheme and the runtime adaptable strategy to slide sub-windows across the input image, the novel design achieves a frame rate up to 125fps for the QVGA resolution, thus significantly outperforming previous works. Such a performance is obtained by using less than 10% of on-chip available logic resources with a power consumption of 377 mW at the 100 MHz clock frequency.

COVID-19 has spread throughout the global and has restrained humans in all aspects of life including society, economy, education, etc. The first Corona virus appeared in China on 2019 and had mutated into several variants such as B.1.1.7 (Alpha), B.1.351 (Beta), E484Q (Delta), and BA.2 (Omicron). In order to block the virus to mutate and spread in the communities, we proposed a design of E-Passport by adopting RFID Implants with integrated Microservices technology. Our concepts is we design an android application (E-passport) that will be used by every institution on public places to stop the positive patients getting inside the public space to spread the virus. The checker in every public places need to scan the RFID implants on every humans hand by using NFC technology embedded on android phone with installed E-Passport to determine whether can enter or forbidden to enter. The RFID Implant stored a unique code that can be read as the reference of the person's data information stored in cloud database based on Microservices infrastructure. Our proposed design and architecture are dedicated to stop the COVID-19 virus to spread among public communities.
