We introduce a general purpose object oriented simulation environment which enables the study of different architectural configurations for servers. The simulation environment has been built on the top of AWESIME which provides a process oriented discrete event simulation environment. On the top of AWESIME, the simulator provides the base class definitions for major components required to build large scale high-performance computer systems, and a more advanced model of any particular component can be derived from these base classes and easily replaced with the old one. This feature enables rapid evaluation of alternatives in simulating different architectures. In addition this design allows studying a component of interest in various degrees of detail while keeping the other components at a coarse-level for a faster simulation time.

In this paper we present an approach for quantitative analysis of application-specific dataflow architectures. The approach allows the designer to rate design alternatives in a quantitative way and therefore supports him in the design process to find better performing architectures. The context of our work is video signal processing algorithms which are mapped onto weakly-programmable, coarse-grain dataflow architectures. The algorithms are represented as Kahn graphs with the functionality of the nodes being coarse-grain functions. We have implemented an architecture simulation environment that permits the definition of dataflow architectures as a composition of architecture elements, such as functional units, buffer elements and communication structures. The abstract, clock-cycle accurate simulator has been built using a multi-threading package and employs object oriented principles. This results in a configurable and efficient simulator. Algorithms can subsequently be executed on the architecture model producing quantitative information for selected performance metrics. Results are presented for the simulation of a realistic application on several dataflow architecture alternatives, showing that many different architectures can be simulated in modest time on a modern workstation.

The control flow of parallel or distributed application can be specified by means of high-level Petri nets. One of the aims of rapid prototyping is to provide a validation of the specification; another is to produce a real application code which can be used in the final implementation. We restrict our considerations in this paper to the first goal only. When high-level Petri nets are involved, such as colored Petri nets, then colored linear invariants contribute to map automatically a set of processes on a specific parallel architecture. The purpose of this paper is to present the state of the art of the prototyping methodology and to illustrate it with a suitable example.

This paper presents an attempt at using formal methods as engineering mathematics. We present a Larch interface language for VHDL, called VSPEC, that provides a mechanism for specifying and analyzing systems level requirements. Further, this language supports abstractions and concepts familiar to traditional digital hardware designers. Using VSPEC, it is possible to specify and verify both functional requirements and constraints. Components are specifying using the traditional axiomatic style extended to include performance constraints and activation conditions. Additionally, using VHDL's structural specification features, it is possible to specify and verify abstract architectures formally. The paper opens by describing general characteristics of VSPEC including single component representation and architecture representation. Design rationale are presented to show how VSPEC provides familiar abstractions to the system designer. Finally, annotated examples are presented to demonstrate the language and its expected uses.

Knowledge of the complex molecular structures of living cells is being accumulated at a tremendous rate. Key technologies enabling this success have been, high performance computing and powerful molecular graphics applications, but the technology is beginning to seriously lag behind challenges posed by the size and number of new structures and by the emerging opportunities in drug design and genetic engineering. A visual computing environment is being developed which permits interactive modeling of biopolymers by linking a 3D molecular graphics program with an efficient molecular dynamics simulation program executed on remote high-performance parallel computers. The system will be ideally suited for distributed computing environments, by utilizing both local 3D graphics facilities and the peak capacity of high-performance computers for the purpose of interactive biomolecular modeling. To create an interactive 3D environment three input methods will be explored: (1) a six degree of freedom "mouse" for controlling the space shared by the model and the user; (2) voice commands monitored through a microphone and recognized by a speech recognition interface; (3) hand gestures, detected through cameras and interpreted using computer vision techniques. Controlling 3D graphics connected to real time simulations and the use of voice with suitable language semantics, as well as hand gestures, promise great benefits for many types of problem solving environments. Our focus on structural biology takes advantage of existing sophisticated software, provides concrete objectives, defines a well-posed domain of tasks and offers a well-developed vocabulary for spoken communication.

We present a generic and yet efficient mission programming method for robotic systems. The MAESTRO programming language, directed towards the end-user, is defined to be integrated into various existing control architectures. Its development is based on the use of formal methods to fully benefit from their mathematical foundations. Subsequently, programs written in MAESTRO can be proven to be in conformity with their specification before they are executed. The programming of a representative underwater mission illustrates the features of MAESTRO and of its companion environment for specification, verification, simulation and control of robotic missions.

We model and evaluate a new parallel processing system for commercial applications, so called SPAX. SPAX cost-effectively overcomes the SMP limitation by providing both scalability of the parallel processing system and application portability of the SMP. To investigate whether the new architecture satisfies the requirements of commercial applications, such as OLTP, we have built the system and workload model. The results of the simulation show that the IO subsystem becomes the bottleneck before the newly developed system network. We find that SPAX can still meet the IO requirement of the OLTP workload as its network and IO node support the flexible IO subsystem, in terms of the number of disk drives and IO nodes versus that of processing nodes.

Performance evaluation of cluster architectures

This paper investigates the performance of shared-memory cluster-based architectures where each cluster is a shared-bus multiprocessor augmented with a protocol processor maintaining cache coherence across clusters. For a given number of processors, sixteen in this study, we evaluate the performance of various cluster configurations. We also consider the impact of adding a remote shared cache in each cluster. We use Mean Value Analysis to estimate the cache miss latencies of various types and the overall execution time. The service demands of shared resources are characterized in detail by examining the sub-requests issued in resolving cache misses. In addition to the architectural system parameters and the service demands on resources, the analytical model needs parameters pertinent to applications. The latter, in particular cache miss profiles, are obtained by trace-driven simulation of three benchmarks. Our results show that without remote caches the performance of cluster-based architectures is mixed. In some configurations, the negative effects of the longer latency of inter-cluster misses and of the contention on the protocol processor are too large to counter-balance the lower contention on the data buses. For two out of the three applications best results are obtained when the system has clusters of size 2 or 6. The cluster-based architectures with remote caches consistently outperform the single bus system for all 3 applications. We also exercise the model with parameters reflecting the current trend in technology making the processor relatively faster than the bus and memory. Under these new conditions, our results show a clear performance advantage for the cluster-based architectures, with or without remote caches, over single bus systems.

This paper reports the outcome of research activities carried out by Alenia as prosecution of the EUCLID Research and Technology Programme (RTP) 4.1 "Modular Avionics Harmonization Study", and in view of a follow-on RTP4.2 to be developed by various European Nations in the field of modeling/simulation of advanced avionics architectures. international research programs encompassing integrated modular avionics, such as the above mentioned EUCLID RTP 4.1 or ASAAC phase 1, have indicated a layered software architecture as the means to fulfil important requirements, such as software portability, software reusability and system fault tolerance. One of these layers, the System Applications Layer, is in charge of managing the system in order to provide a behavior which, across the various mission phases and system states, is compliant to what required by a structured description, realized off-line and embodied in a set of "Blueprints", accessible by the System Manager in real-time. This paper develops the Blueprints concept, carrying out an exercise of its application to a reference system architecture. As a preliminary outlook on future European studies, it is shown how, exploiting commercial simulation toolsets with an approach based on Blueprints, generic avionics architectures can be rapidly modeled and simulated, to investigate configuration and performance issues without costly prototyping.

This paper describes a simulation study of the performance of an intelligent control system designed to adjust the ventilator respiratory rate during assist control mechanical ventilation. The system described utilizes fuzzy logic to facilitate the inclusion of expert knowledge from clinicians in the form of linguistic statements. The system's ability to make appropriate adjustments was demonstrated in seven computer simulated patient-ventilator cases. The controller took appropriate action in all cases. Intelligent control architectures may constitute an important new approach to closed-loop decision support. Intelligent control of ventilator respiratory rate settings in assist-control ventilation is a candidate for further research and clinical validation.
