This work presents a multi-leveled model based on Colored Generalized Stochastic Petri nets (CGSPN) approach for offshore wind energy installation. The offshore logistics, which describes the organization of offshore operations, is embedded at the root level. The offshore operations, e.g., loading and sailing, are implemented at the secondary level using sub-models. The large scale of the wind turbine components and the ever-changing offshore weather conditions make the scheduling difficult. The aim is to support the project operators and managers in making decisions with the knowledge of the system behavior obtained through stochastic simulation, in which historical weather data measured on the German North Sea from 1958 to 2007 is used. The numerical results show the influence of decision variables, e.g. initial inventory, on a designed offshore wind farm with a size of 80 wind turbines. © 2020 by the international Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

Model Based systems Engineering (MBSE) thrived in the recent decades in order to overcome the increasing complexity within systems. MBSE envisioned replacing document centric systems engineering by model centric systems engineering. MBSE can handle systems complexity efficiently by representing each entity in the model only once and generating different viewpoints. Most commonly used MBSE language is the "systems modeling Language (SysML)". Virtual Reality can play a bigger role on creating truly model centric systems engineering approaches. The core application of MBSE approach implies utilization of a single system model, which will act as "source of truth" to all embedded system analyzing tools. Thus, the system model can communicate back and forth with Virtual Reality Environment to analyze the system performance. systems engineer can conduct interactive immersive simulation of a scenario described in the system model and return the results obtained from the Virtual Reality Environment to the system model. Requirements analysis can be performed more efficiently by ensuring participation of the customers early in the product lifecycle utilizing the VR environment. A customer can walk into VR environment and see how the system design would look like and interact with it. Based on the interaction results, the systems engineer can modify the product/service specifications and design. This paper reviewed the works been done to incorporate virtual reality environment with SysML. The paper also proposed a framework on how VR environment can be implemented with SysML to perform true MBSE practice. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Modern-day High Performance Computing (HPC) trends are shifting towards exascale performance figures in order to satisfy the needs of many compute-intensive and power-hungry applications. Hence, the European-funded ECOSCALE project introduces a highly innovative architecture, which spreads the workload among a number of independent and concurrently-operating conventional (CPU) as well as reconfigurable (FPGA) processing elements that execute OpenCL cores whilst significantly minimizing the need for data transfers. The accelerator cores implemented on the ECOSCALE platform correspond to the project use cases and have been the source of a meticulous exploration process for optimal performance results such as execution time. This paper focuses on performance and power optimizations of the Michelsen algorithm. This algorithm is an efficient calculator of the Rachford-Rice equation, which is extensively used in the field of oil Reservoir simulation (RS). The algorithm was first optimized manually through Vivado HLS and, subsequently, using a Design Space Exploration (DSE) tool we developed in [1]. Here we present up-to-date optimization results based on the latest FPGA ECOSCALE platform in order to reveal bottlenecks, saturation points and design alternatives. The measurements are performed on real data and the evaluation results register significant gains in calculation times over conventional CPU platforms;an achievement that carries added value considering the significantly reduced power consumption costs commonly associated with reconfigurable hardware.

Emerging infrastructure-less network architectures such as WSNs consist of devices that perform packet processing in software. General-purpose network simulators do currently not possess models to simulate the intra-node delay of such devices. A TelosB mote with TinyOS spends seven and fifteen ms on processing packets of size 36 and 124 bytes. Failing to simulate this leads to an inaccurate simulation of packet loss, jitter, and latency. In this work, we create a communication software execution model of TelosB that accounts for its temporal behavior for more accurate WSN simulations in the ns-3 simulator. A challenge in doing so is to create a tracing framework for TinyOS that can be used to accurately and reliably trace its behavior. The evaluation of our model shows that it is scalable and accurate;the simulated intra-OS delay deviates at most 5% from the intra-OS delay in the real mote. Moreover, the real mote and our model both start to drop packets at 65kbps (124 bytes packets), while the original ns-3 model starts dropping packets at 101kbps. This 36% decrease in forwarding capacity demonstrates that our model enables significantly more accurate simulations.

Compiler optimization passes employ cost models to determine if a code transformation will yield performance improvements. When this assessment is inaccurate, compilers apply transformations that are not beneficial, or refrain from applying ones that would have improved the code. We analyze the accuracy of the cost models used in LLVM's and GCC's vectorization passes for two different instruction set architectures. In general, speedup is over-estimated, resulting in mispredictions and a weak to medium correlation between predicted and actual performance gain. We therefore propose a novel cost model that is based on a code's intermediate representation with refined memory access pattern features. Using linear regression techniques, this platform independent model is fitted to an AVX2 and a NEON hardware. Results show that the fitted model significantly improves the correlation between predicted and measured speedup (AVX2: +52% for training data, +13% for validation data), as well as the number of mispredictions (NEON: -15 for training data, -12 for validation data) for more than 80 code patterns.

Cooperative automated vehicles must perceive the environment accurately and have precise information about the leading vehicle's pose and velocity. This paper presents a SysML-based approach to design and develop a stereo vision-based perception system in an urban platooning scenario. It detects objects, lane markers, and free space in front of the follower vehicle using deep neural networks and computes the lead vehicle's relative pose and velocity. The relative pose is estimated using a geometric model-based pose estimation algorithm. The relative velocity is estimated from the change in pose within a known time. The lead vehicle's relative pose and velocity control the follower vehicle to follow the lead vehicle autonomously. Also, it displays the lead vehicle's pose and velocity information in a meaningful way on the in-vehicle display of the follower vehicle. The proposed system uses a custom-built automotive-grade stereo camera as input and runs on an automotive-grade embedded platform. It is tested on a simulation and prototype cooperative automated vehicle research platform. The evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed system operates in real-time and is suitable for cooperative automated vehicles.

From year to year information processing algorithms based on neural networks(NN) are gaining more and more popularity. Such networks are characterized by a large number of hidden layers and huge amounts of training data, requiring a specialized high-performance device. In the past few years the main platforms for implementing hardware neural networks have been FPGAs and GPUs. In all power-limited scenarios FPGAs are the natural choice. Developers of specialized computing systems are interested in porting these algorithms to embedded computing platforms. However, there are limitations that prevent the use these algorithms for managing technical systems and objects. One of the limitations is the lack of a mathematical apparatus that would formally evaluate the compliance of real-time constraints for artificial neural networks(ANN). To solve this global problem, a particular problem is solved in this paper. There was proposed and tested a method for validating the temporal characteristics of hardware artificial neural networks implemented on FPGA. This method is suitable for use on neural networks transferred to a hardware platform with pre-selected coefficients, and for neural networks trained directly on the target platform. The method is based on the apparatus of queuing networks (QN), which allow the validation of the temporal characteristics of artificial neural networks according with the hardware features of the target computing platform. The presented method has an applied focus. This paper presents the results of experimental testing of the proposed method and proved the feasibility of using the queuing network apparatus for validating the temporal characteristics of artificial neural networks. Raman spectroscopy provides chemical and compositional information that can serve as a structural fingerprint for various materials. Therefore, simulations of Raman spectra, including both quantum perturbation analyses and ground-state calculations are of significant interest. However, highly accurate full quantum mechanical (QM) simulations of Raman spectra have previously been confined to small systems. For large systems such as biological materials, the computational cost of full QM simulations is extremely high, and their extension to such systems remains challenging. In the work described here, by employing robust new algorithms and advances in implementation for the many-core architectures, we are able to perform fast, accurate, and massively parallel full ab initio simulations of the Raman spectra of biological systems with excellent strong and weak scaling, thereby providing a starting point for applying QM approaches to structural studies of such systems.

Modern systems are increasingly complex and heterogeneous like mixed-signal systems and real-time controllers. In particularly, embedded systems become more complex caused by the diverse functionality integrated into the same system. There are several challenges faced by embedded system's developers as the choice of modeling/simulation level and environments. embedded system is based on Discrete Event model. The system's design should take into consideration the selected abstraction level. In literature, there are three main levels: conceptual level, functional level, and physical level. Usually, developers try to simulate the system's behavior at earlier stage of design with a higher precision and adequate customization. As an attempt, this paper proposes a co-simulation technique to synchronize between conceptual level and functional level. This attempt tries to benefit from advantages of each level. The conceptual level provides more details about the data flow status and the functional level returns the real service time instead the estimation. The co-simulation model was implemented in the case of Arena and SystemC environments and evaluated using a motion detection system as an illustrative application. The performance evaluation is based on accuracy and the simulation time.

The development of Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) for high-performance embedded applications has become a major challenge for designers due to a number of crucial constraints to meet, such as functional correctness and temporal performance. This paper presents a new process intended to support and facilitate the co-design and scheduling analysis of high-performance applications on MPSoCs. The contribution of this process is that it is designed to i) model the system functionality, execution architectures and allocation of software and hardware parts using a high-level modeling language ii) verify scheduling analysis of the system using a simulation tool and iii) offer a reconfiguration technique in order to meet constraints and preserve the system non-functional properties (NFPs).
