Using a hardware descriptive language, it is possible to develop simulation models for processor interconnection networks which take hardware considerations into account during simulation. Models were produced for nine interconnection networks, specialized first for a simple algorithm, then adapted for a more complex task. simulations were conducted to ensure the correctness of the models, and the complexities involved in expanding the simple example into the more complex one were considered. In particular, simulation results obtained with the DABL (Daisy Behavioral Language) model are presented. The DABL models were capable of providing more insight into hardware-related issues than simulations conducted in conventional programming languages.

The OIS (Operational Integration System) data model and query language are presented. The main goal of OIS is to provide the application environments with a uniform interface for accessing data managed by heterogeneous systems. Conceptually, OIS can be depicted as a three-level system. The integration data model level allows distributed applications to be coded in object-oriented style. The operational interface abstract level and the operational interface implementation level feature the operational mapping between application environments and distributed heterogeneous systems. It is shown how OIS features can be embedded in C++. The prototype of OIS has confirmed the modeling features of the operational integration technique adopted. Three test driving applications have been selected: (1) a file-based application for the management of textual data, using either indexed or sequential access files;(2) a graphic database related to a computer-aided-design management system;(3) a public data bank, with a TTY-oriented interface protocol accessed through telephone lines. The obtained results have encouraged the developers to enhance the OIS implementation.

An object-oriented simulator model for parallel computer systems is described. It is designed for a shared memory multiprocessor and uses the principle of execution-driven simulation. Two alternatives for structuring the simulation are presented and evaluated. The first uses a single shared event list object and treats all processes uniformly. In the second, the parallel-program model and the target parallel-architecture model are each represented as a set of process objects that communicate with each other by means of messages. Only the local simulation times of the processes involved are examined prior to removing an event from the event list. This method enforces timestamp ordering among all events, thus providing the advantages of a global time and a global event list. Two independent concepts are integrated: parallel simulation on shared memory and execution-driven simulation of concurrent programs.< >

The author presents a vector data-flow (VDF) architecture which is based on the following design philosophy: increasing data granularity, whenever possible, by grouping together ordered sequences of data into logical structures called vectors; increasing node granularity by grouping together nodes, according to a partitioning algorithm, to form logical structures called tasks; and supporting efficient execution of both vector and task structures by designing a dedicated hardware level. The VDF processor based on this scheme is described, and simulation results are presented.< >

The basic thoughts behind a method extending the scope of object-oriented approaches toward modeling the architecture of large systems is presented. The method integrates the traditional 'divide-and-conquer' approach with the object-structured approach which is building-block oriented and tends to be more bottom-up. In the large, two hierarchies dominate the thinking process: a top-down hierarchy of object instances and a bottom-up hierarchy of classes. In the small, the thinking process centers around communicating objects, which are self-contained models of parts of large systems. The basic communication mechanism is a generalized message-passing. The author elaborates how he has tried to overcome logical and physical complexity problems that arise when modeling architectures of larger systems.< >

The sources of parallelism in an event-driven simulator have been investigated. First, a simple and straightforward parallelization strategy was implemented. It was observed that this strategy did not provide sufficient parallelism. Then the advance scheduling strategy was developed, which has yielded a significantly higher degree of parallelism. The main contribution of this research has been the development of this advance scheduling strategy. This strategy trades a small amount of inaccuracy in the simulation results for a large gain in the amount of parallelism extracted from the simulator. This strategy can be effectively applied for statistical simulators, because the statistical methods of simulation themselves introduce variations in the results. It was observed that, with a proper choice for the overlap distance, the error in the final results is comparable to the variation in the results introduced by the statistical simulation methods employed. A modified implementation of the event queue (Runqueue), which exploits the disorder in event scheduling created by the advance scheduling strategy, is presented. This implementation should significantly reduce contention for the Runqueue. A simulation model was implemented to simulate a distributed memory architecture proposed by D. Black, Z. Segall, and L. Rudolph. With the help of this simulation model, extensive experiments can be conducted to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed architecture.< >

After a general introduction concerning flight simulator development problems and the goals of the study, functional and development requirements are specified and the needed computing capacity is evaluated. (The same methodology can be applied to any real-time embedded computer system.) Typical benchmarks are introduced and analytical expressions on the time spent on communication are explained for cases of common memory, Multibus II and VME. The conclusions indicate the preferred solution, why it was selected and intentions for continuation of this work in the immediate future. The methodology presented and the resulting solution provide a simple way for combining existing hardware elements to achieve a low-cost implementation.< >

The application of PROTOB, an object-oriented CASE system based on high-level Petri nets, to rapid prototyping of distributed systems is presented. PROTOB consists of several tools supporting specification, modeling and prototyping activities within the framework of the operational software life-cycle paradigm. As its major application area it addresses distributed systems, such as real-time embedded systems, communication protocols and manufacturing control systems. The PROTOB methodology and its support environment can be used in software development of distributed discrete-event dynamic systems at three different levels. The functionality of the system can be formally defined and also analyzed quantitatively by building a PROT net based model, which is actually a simulation model. The model becomes more detailed and the timing of the transitions is real, being managed by the host operating system. The PROTOB objects emulating the physical environment are are replaced by a suitable interface which has the task of transforming signals coming from the plant into tokens to be introduced into the PROTOB model and, likewise, of converting tokens coming from the PROTOB model into appropriate commands issued to the plant.< >

The basic structure of a dynamic data-flow architecture based on the argument-fetching data-flow principle is outlined. In particular, the authors present a scheme to exploit fine-grain parallelism in function invocation based on the argument-fetching principle. They extend the static architecture by associating a frame of consecutive memory space for each parallel function invocation, called a function overlay, and identify each invocation instance with the base address of its overlay. The scheme gains efficiency by making effective use of the power provided by the argument-fetching data-flow principle: the separation of the instruction scheduling mechanism and the instruction execution. To handle function applications and memory management, the proposed architecture will have a memory overlay manager that is separate from the pipelined execution unit. To verify the design, a set of standard benchmark programs was mapped onto the new architecture and executed on an experimental general-purpose data-flow architecture simulation testbed.< >
