The strict requirements on the timing correctness biased the modeling and analysis of real-time systems toward the worst-case performances. Such focus on the worst-case, however, does not provide enough information to effectively steer the resource/energy optimization. In this article, we integrate a probabilistic-based energy prediction strategy with the precise scheduling of mixed-criticality tasks, where the timing correctness must be met for all tasks at all scenarios. The dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) is applied to this precise scheduling policy to enable energy minimization. We propose a probabilistic technique to derive an energy-efficient speed (for the processor) that minimizes the average energy consumption, while guaranteeing the (worst-case) timing correctness for all tasks, including LO-criticality ones, under any execution condition. We present a response time analysis for such systems under the nonpreemptive fixed-priority scheduling policy. Finally, we conduct an extensive simulation campaign based on randomly generated task sets to verify the effectiveness of our algorithm (with respect to energy savings) and it reports up to 46% energy-saving. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

Web Cloud systems are becoming more and more popular. In the article we want to examine HTTP request distribution strategies that can be used in one and two layer architectures of Web cloud systems. In particular, we want to compare our intelligent solutions with each other, and with popular and most commonly used in Web cloud systems. We describe modern solutions, present the test-bed and results of conducted experiments. At the end, we discuss results and present final conclusions.

The approach of the paper regards analysis of a light electric vehicle used for urban mobility via real-time simulation with experimental validation. Using a dedicated software, National Instruments VeriStand, the authors prove the possibility of performing vehicle testing for a period of actual mobility time recorded inside the urban scenario. Such long-time simulations are extremely time consuming or impossible to perform using computer-based simulators. One solution is to decrease the model complexity in order to perform these simulations, however the computation time still reaches periods beyond the actual analyzed one. Using VeriStand, the model complexity is kept at its maximum, hence the accuracy and the performances are not diminished. The required computation time is the actual mobility time. Hence, the same time can be applied for an actual test-bench, proving via comparative analysis the quality of the results and the accuracy of the model under test. The considered application is an electric scooter, equipped with a 300W permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM), supplied via an inverter from a source of 36 VDC. The model of the PMSM is a flux-linkage one designed in Matlab Simulink and exported into VeriStand running on a NI-PXIe 8135 embedded Controller. The entire study is validated with experimental measurements performed with the actual machine under study.

The objective of the present work is the performance assessments of a bi-fluid photovoltaic/thermal solar collector (PV/T). Based on energy-balance equations, a mathematical model of PV/T hybrid collector has been developed and simulated using Matlab Software. This model takes into account the effect of the three modes of fluid operation under the same PV/T system, namely: the air mode, the water mode, and the simultaneous mode of water and air. The results show that the lowest PV module temperature is observed in the simultaneous mode (air water) compared to others modes. It's maximum value achieved is around 62°C in the bi-fluid mode against 80°C and 73°C respectively in the air mode and the water mode. The maximum efficiencies of 66.97 % (thermal efficiency) and 10.1% (electrical efficiency) are also observed, when both fluids are operated simultaneously compared to others modes. Finally, the working in simultaneous mode is beneficial to transmit more heat, produce more thermal energy and consequently improve the electrical and thermal performances of the PV/T hybrid collector. Moreover, the theoretical model developed is validated, evidencing a good fit between simulation results and the experimental data available in literature. The PV/T collector designed in this study has a variety of applications, as solar drying in agriculture, air conditioning, space heating and hot water supply for domestic applications. © 2020 IEEE.

ICT and digital Technologies have influenced the everyday life and the way how people learn and work. Nowadays, there is a variety of learning systems supporting innovative digital approaches and many schools, universities and organizations worldwide are investing in building their own e-Learning platforms. However, learners” performance still a concern that requests focus for improvement. The learning processes can be adapted to suit the needs of particular users when the proposed e-learning systems include context-awareness computing. We believe that instead of designing an e-Learning environment with hidden contextual information, e.g.: user's activity, location or nearby devices, we must consider a new e-Learning application approach including context-awareness capabilities. Such a system will be more efficient and adaptive to users' needs. Existing e-Learning systems suffer a lack of dynamic scalability. It's also complexes to extend, and expensive to integrate with other e-Learning platforms. In particular students who have visual processing disorder or hearing impairments can manipulate digital text or use adaptive modules like Subtitles which help them in processing the information effectively. This paper focus on the development of a hybrid e-Learning cloud system that combines the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) architecture and various contexts aware computing such as User context, system context, and environment context that can quickly adjust to any environment change is expected. Were viewed traditional e-Learning architectures and their limitations and then proposed a hybrid cloud computing architecture to offer resources efficiently to all learning stakeholders and improve the education system quality at an affordable cost. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed system, we implemented and evaluated a simulation scenario. To transform a systematic model of project management (PM) into a powerful discrete event model (DEM), these two concepts must be merged for mapping and simulation. To achieve this the modeling of PM, its complex tasks must be abstracted, and a decomposition of the entire model into subsystems including the interactions and their components has to be carried out. A merge can only take place if a common level of detailing and abstraction can be identified. In a DEM, the complexity is put into the connection of the subsystems. The behavior of the individual subsystems, however, is kept simple. [1]

This paper presents an efficient hardware architecture able to perform 2D dilated convolutions and suitable for the integration within modern heterogeneous embedded systems targeting semantic image segmentation. The proposed design supports multiple dilation rates. Moreover, it uses limited amounts of resources even when large convolution windows are processed. As a case study, the novel circuit has been integrated within a Xilinx Zynq-7000 FPSoC device to accelerate a state-of-the-art CNN model for medical images segmentation. Obtained results demonstrate that higher computational capabilities, reduced resources utilization and lower power consumption are achieved with respect to the competitors existing in literature.

As a consequence of the energy transition, energy systems are moving toward more distributed architectures. This paper proposes a method to co-design today’s and tomorrow’s energy systems, relying on an innovative model-based engineering methodology taking account of the requirements of all stakeholders and of the spatiotemporal and physical constraints of the system. It enables the use of simulation to verify design and operational solutions against system requirements. Thus, not only solutions but also requirements need to be modelled in languages with well-defined syntax and semantics. Requirements and high-level solutions (e.g., systems architectures) may be modelled in the innovative language FORM-L (FOrmal Requirements modeling Language), whereas detailed solutions may be modelled using behavioral languages in place such as Modelica or Anylogic. A demonstrator called PowerGrid illustrates the overall methodology on a rather complete district energy system, embedding energy production facilities, energy consumers and appropriate networks. © 2019 Society for modeling & simulation international (SCS).

Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable architectures (CGRAs) are being considered as a complementary addition to modern High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems. These reconfigurable devices overcome many of the limitations of the (more popular) FPGA, by providing higher operating frequency, denser compute capacity, and lower power consumption. Today, CGRAs have been used in several embedded applications, including automobile, telecommunication, and mobile systems, but the literature on CGRAs in HPC is sparse and the field full of research opportunities. In this work, we introduce our CGRA simulator infrastructure for use in evaluating future HPC CGRA systems. Our CGRA simulator is built on synthesizable VHDL and is highly parametrizable, including support for connectivity, SIMD, data-type width, and heterogeneity. Unlike other related work, our framework supports co-integration with third-party memory simulators or evaluation of future memory architecture, which is crucial to reason around memory-bound applications. We demonstrate how our framework can be used to explore the performance of multiple different kernels, showing the impact of different configuration and design-space options.

Manycore architectures are mainly composed of a very large amount of computing nodes interconnected with a multiplicity of links usually forming a NoC-like mesh architecture. High-speed links permit to obtain a higher throughput but are much more expensive than normal links, making the interconnection of the system a cost/performance trade-off. Simulating such architectures is very important in order to characterise the optimal network topology for a given problem. In this work we introduce SCALPsim: a simulation framework permitting to evaluate routing algorithms and network properties in 1-D, 2-D and 3-D regular mesh topologies simultaneously using links of different characteristics in terms of latency and throughput. These features are particularly interesting in large scale systems with processing elements grouped into clusters, where communication properties differ largely inside and between clusters. This paper presents the framework and an application based on Cellular Self-Organizing Maps - CSOM.
