This paper presents a novel ferroelectric field-effect transistor (FeFET) in-memory computing architecture dedicated to accelerate Binary Neural Networks (BNNs). We present in-memory convolution, batch normalization and dense layer processing through a grid of small crossbars with reduced unit size, which enables multiple bit operation and value accumulation. Additionally, we explore the possible operations parallelization for maximized computational performance. simulation results show that our new architecture achieves a computing performance up to 2.46 TOPS while achieving a high power efficiency reaching 111.8 TOPS/Watt and an area of 0.026 mm 2 in 22nm FDSOI technology.

With the increasing demand for performance and the slowness in process technology, it is becoming critical to understand micro architecture efficiency. This paper presents a simple model for approximating the contribution of the microarchitecture vs. the contribution of the process technology to the overall energy-efficiency of a processor. The results indicate that the contribution of microarchitectural changes is highly workload-dependent and is negligible for several workloads. Our method can be applied to other workloads and systems because its underlying analytical model is manufacturing- and workload-independent.

Synchronous dataflow graphs are widely used to model digital signal processing and multimedia applications. Self-timed execution is an efficient methodology for the analysis and scheduling of synchronous dataflow graphs. In this paper, we propose a communication-aware self-timed execution approach to solve the problem of scheduling synchronous dataflow graphs on multicore systems with communication delays. Based on this communication aware self-timed execution approach, four communication-aware scheduling algorithms are proposed using different allocation rules. The proposed algorithms are experimentally evaluated in terms of throughput and runtime using realistic applications.

In the last decades, vehicular control applications evolved to comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance systems (ADAS) with exploding complexity. Several simulation-driven approaches can ease their development, e.g., model-based design and driving simulators, which are often limited to functional traits. To bridge this gap, virtual platforms can be used for accurately simulating the entire hardware/software layer, while validating beyond-functional properties (e.g., task execution times). Moreover, multi-domain co-simulation standards enable combining such distinct ecosystems beyond tool and model boundaries. Based on these concepts, this work presents a joint set of frameworks for virtualizing the ADAS prototyping flow via whole-system simulation. The focus of the work lies in the design of an automotive-flavor virtual platform, ensuring accurate and fast hardware/software simulation. To highlight the advantages of the framework system, two ADAS applications were prototyped in various configurations. Lastly, algorithmic and system-level analyses are presented, alongside simulation performance evaluation. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

The great progress in the field of digitization and networking of the industry brings many advantages as well as new challenges. On the one hand, it enables new business models that hold great economic growth potential. On the other hand, it leads to an increased heterogeneity of the resulting value- added networks. This poses a striking problem when it comes to the interconnection of industrial devices and the establishment of new business models. Since the disadvantages can quickly outweigh the advantages, activities in this area proceed still very cautiously. A solution is offered by highly dynamic attribute-based usage control architectures at network-level, which monitor the entire communication in the value-added networks. Previous approaches, however, either have the disadvantage that they can only use communication metadata as attributes, or are highly specialized and tailored to the respective systems of the individual network nodes. In addition, they are usually pure access control systems instead of usage control systems. In this paper, the authors propose a novel attribute-based usage control model (ABUC) that allows simulation models in form of digital twins of the respective network components to be used in order to predict their behavior and thus control network traffic according to predicted usage. The ABUC model is then implemented in a use case and validated with several performance tests.

The globalization of the IC supply chain has brought forth the era of fabless companies. Due to security issues during design and fabrication processes, various security concerns have risen, ranging from IP piracy and reverse engineering to hardware Trojans. Logic encryption has emerged as a mitigation against these threats. However, no generic metrics for quantifying the security of logic encryption algorithms has been reported so far, making it impossible to formally compare diferent approaches. In this paper, we propose a unifying metric, capturing the key security aspects of logic encryption algorithms. The metric is evaluated on state-of-the- art algorithms and benchmarks.

Organizations have moved towards service based architectures and applications are hosted in the Clouds. An interruption in online delivery of such services is of grave concern to the organizations as it causes problems to a large number of users. The identification of the security vulnerability in these systems which can be exploited by cybercriminals is of utmost importance when developing an architecture for online hosting of applications. Defensive capabilities to thwart the cybercriminals must be deployed. A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is commonly employed to create panic and prevent the delivery of services to legitimate users. This paper presents the use of network security simulation and modeling for understanding the effect of cyberattacks such as DDoS on a system. Experimentations conducted include deployment of services such as FTP, Email, and HTTP in a simulated environment. The main aim is to simulate network infrastructure and security policies before online deployment of the services. As these services will be used by a large number of users concurrently, it would be important to create a resilient system against modern DDoS attacks. The observations from the simulations will allow to share and expand the knowledge of the users for development of secure systems.

Optimizing compilers provide valuable contributions to the quality of processed code. The vast majority of application developers rely on those capabilities to obtain binary code efficiently utilizing processing resources. However, compiler proficiency is frequently misjudged by application developers. While for some constellations the effectiveness of those optimizations is grossly underestimated, for others, mostly involving higher-level semantic concepts of embedded DSLs, the compilers' influence on the code quality tends to disappoint. In this paper, we provide examples for the effectiveness and ineffectiveness of state-of-the-art optimizing compilers in improving application code. Based on those observations we characterize the differences between positive and negative examples and provide an in-depth explanation for the short-comings of optimizing compilers. Furthermore, we present a semantic-aware compiler architecture rectifying those deficiencies and outline several example use cases demonstrating our architecture's ability to contribute to the efficiency and the capabilities of embedded DSLs.

modeling and simulation of electromagnetic devices, such as mobile phones, operating at millimeter wavelengths, e.g., at 30GHz, is challenging because the dimensions of the platform are typically large as compared to the operating wavelength. In this work, we propose several strategies for addressing the issue of CPU time and memory consumption, while preserving the accuracy of the computation. This include geometry simplification as well as application of a numerical algorithm for memory reduction and GPU acceleration. Memory reduction is achieved by employing an efficient iteration-free technique called the Characteristic Basis Functions Method (CBFM) proposed in [1] , to solve problems involving a large number of degrees of freedom. The CBFM has been extensively investigated by a number of authors, including [2] , to analyze objects embedded in multi-layered media.
