Large scale penetration of intermittent wind power may result in base-load cycling capacity (BLCC) shortage problem, which poses an adverse impact on secure operation of power systems. The integration scale of wind power is heavily relevant to the BLCC adequacy. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the BLCC adequacy of power systems. Using probabilistic production simulation technology, a BLCC adequacy evaluation method considering the forced outage of conventional generation units is developed in this paper. In this method, several BLCC adequacy indexes are defined, namely the probability of BLCC shortage index, the expectation of BLCC shortage index, and the expectation of BLCC margin index. A scenario reduction technique is employed to tackle the uncertainty of wind speed. Numerical examples are presented to verify the reasonableness and effectiveness of the proposed method. This work is helpful to determine the appropriate wind power integration scale in power systems.

Next generation data centers will likely be based on the emerging paradigm of disaggregated function-blocks-as-a-unit departing from the current state of mainboard-as-a-unit. Multiple functional blocks or bricks such as compute, memory and peripheral will be spread through the entire system and interconnected together via one or multiple high speed networks. The amount of memory available will be very large distributed among multiple bricks. This new architecture brings various benefits that are desirable in today's data centers such as fine-grained technology upgrade cycles, fine-grained resource allocation, and access to a larger amount of memory and accelerators. An analysis of the impact and benefits of memory disaggregation is presented in this paper. One of the biggest challenges when analyzing these architectures is that memory accesses should be modeled correctly in order to obtain accurate results. However, modeling every memory access would generate a high overhead that can make the simulation unfeasible for real data center applications. A model to represent and analyze memory disaggregation has been designed and a statistics-based queuing-based full system simulator was developed to rapidly and accurately analyze applications performance in disaggregated systems. With a mean error of 10%, simulation results pointed out that the network layers may introduce overheads that degrade applications' performance up to 66%. Initial results also suggest that low memory access bandwidth may degrade up to 20% applications' performance. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) involve in a variety of computing model integration and collaborative work. There are some problems such as ununified design methods, worse elasticity, high complexity, difficult to implement cyber-physical co-design and co-verification, etc. Aiming at the co-design of embedded components, sensing components, controlling components, communication components and physical components in heterogeneous environments, this paper proposes the characteristics, architectures, technologies, and design methodologies of CPSs. It's necessary to design CPSs in the model-driven design process to establish CPSs and confirm its correctness, support cyber-physical codesign and correctness by construction so as to avoid modifying repeatedly the design when problems are found in the system realization process, and provide the necessary theoretical and practical technical supports to establish CPSs.

The rise of offshore wind energy production poses a complex resource allocation problem with respect to operation and maintenance (O&M) of offshore wind farms: O&M tasks need be performed by teams of specialists, subject to limited availability of qualifications, means of transport and appropriate weather conditions. Among others, NP-complete problems like shortest return routing ("Travelling Salesman") and job scheduling are embedded into the challenge of determining O&M schedules, which in real-world wind farm operation is often still conducted by hand. In this work, we address this problem by proposing a heuristic approach based on a "compatibility rating", attempting to anticipatorily allocate tasks to teams such that the remaining tasks not yet allocated can still be conducted efficiently, e.g. by a different team. This means of decision support relies on simulation to evaluate the feasibility of the schedules generated.

Distributed formation control of Second-order Multi-agent systems has been discussed in this paper. A consensus-based cooperative formation control strategy with both input delay and communication delay has been proposed. The control strategy not only consider the deviation between the actual speed and the standard speed, but also, on the basis of this, consider the deviation between the actual displacement and the standard displacement. In order to achieve a faster consensus seeking, the tow-hop relay protocol has been introduced into the strategy. The control strategy makes agents can build up stable and desired formation and move at expected speed. Based on the frequency-domain analysis and matrix theory, the distributed conditions are proved for the formation control of system. A six-vehicle formation control example is shown in simulation as an illustrative example.

The paper is concerned with a dynamic state estimation algorithm in power systems under denial of service (DoS) attacks. Firstly, the character of data packet losses caused by DoS attacks is described by Bernoulli distribution, and the dynamic model of power system is reconstructed. Using Holt's two-parameter exponential smoothing and extended Kalman filtering techniques, a dynamic state estimation algorithm is proposed, where the recursion formula of the parameter identification, state prediction and state filtering contain the statistical properties of data packet losses. simulation results confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

The design problem of controller for a dynamic output feedback networked control system with uncertain short time delay and packet dropout is studied. The data packet dropout is assumed to be satisfied with the Bernoulli distribution sequence with known probability. The dynamic output feedback networked control system is modeled as a discrete time-varying system with uncertainties. Sufficient conditions for the existence of the controller are given by the linear matrix inequality (LMI) method and the Lyapunov principle. And the controller design problem is transformed into solving the feasible solution of LMI. Finally, a simulation example is given to prove the effectiveness and feasibility of the design method.

With increasing number of IP cores, parallel communication architectures including NoCs have emerged for many-core systems. To efficiently architect NoCs, early analysis of crucial run-time metrics such as throughput, latency and saturation time is required. This requires abstract modeling of NoCs. modeling abstraction, and consequently the modeling granularity impacts the accuracy and speed of simulation. While a fine-grained model will slowly lead more accurate information, a coarser model simulates faster and yields less accurate predictions. This paper first identifies possible levels of abstraction for NoC models and correlating captured features with the accuracy/speed trade-off. Second, this paper proposes two NoC models at different abstraction levels: a finer grained Bus-Functional Model (BFM), and a coarser Transaction-Level Model (TLM). The BFM updates the system status after any events happening during data unit transmission, while the TLM updates the system status at the end of data unit transmission. Our evaluation results show moving to higher abstraction (from BFM to TLM) gains 10x to 50x speedup at the cost of 10%–20% accuracy loss on average. Our analysis approach and results guide system architects in exploring NoC architectural alternatives and help identifying suitable abstract levels. © IFIP international Federation for Information Processing 2017.

Today, many industrial products are defined by software, and therefore customizable by installing new applications on demand - their functionalities are implemented by software and can be modified and extended by software updates. This trend towards customizable products is extending into all domains of IT, including Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) such as cars, robotics, and medical devices. However, these systems are often highly safety-critical. The current state-of-practice allows hardly any modifications once safety-critical systems are put in operation. This is due to the lack of techniques to preserve crucial safety conditions for the modified system, which severely restricts the benefits of software. This work aims at new paradigms and technologies for the design and safe software updates of CPS at operation-time - subject to stringent timing constraints, dynamic workloads, and limited resources on complex computing platforms. Essentially there are three key challenges: Composability, Resource-Efficiency and Predictability to enable modular, incremental and safe software updates over system life-time in use. We present research directions to address these challenges: (1) Open architectures and implementation schemes for building composable systems, (2) Fundamental issues in real-time scheduling aiming at a theory of multi-resource (inc. multiprocessor) scheduling, and (3) New-generation techniques and tools for fully separated verification of timing and functional properties of real-time systems with significantly improved efficiency and scalability. The tools shall support not only verification, but also code generation tailored for both co-simulation (interfaced) with existing design tools such as Open Modelica (for modeling and simulation of physical components), and deployment on given computing platforms.

From security perspective, cyber physical system (CPS) security issue is investigated in this note. Based on a double-loop security control structure, the typical cyber attack called information disclosure, denial-of-service (DoS), deception attack and stealth attack are analyzed from uncertainty perspective. The performance of these attacks are formulated, meaningful models are proposed meanwhile. According to aforementioned attacks, security control scenarios are obtained via the character of each kind cyber attack. And some novel results are obtained via a well designed double closed loop structure. At last, from traditional standpoint, uncertainties of a separately excited DC motor is taken as an example to demonstrate the problem.
