With the scaling of technology, many systems have been able to integrate microcontrollers to improve their functionalities. An example of this integration can be found in the fireworks scenario. Traditionally, fireworks have been directly managed by experts. However, the up-To-date firing systems can be handled remotely. Nevertheless, current solutions are expensive. In this paper we propose a cheap distributed platform able to fire and test a ti reworks show. In order to achieve this, we have designed, simulated and tested a 24 e-matches control node. This node is based on the ESP8266 chip, which possesses WiFi capability, and a transistors matrix that allows managing r∗q outputs with just r+q transistors. simulations and real tests demonstrate the correct behavior of our system, which is cheaper than the state-of-The-Art approaches. © 2016 Society for modeling & simulation international (SCS).

Traditional Database Management System (DBMS) software relies on hard disks for storing relational data. Hard disks are cheap, persistent, and offer huge storage capacities. However, data retrieval latency for hard disks is extremely high. To hide this latency, DRAM is used as an intermediate storage. DRAM is significantly faster than disk, but deployed in smaller capacities due to cost and power constraints, and without the necessary persistency feature that disks have. Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) is an emerging storage class technology which promises the best of both worlds. It can offer large storage capacities, due to better scaling and cost metrics than DRAM, and is non-volatile (persistent) like hard disks. At the same time, its data retrieval time is much lower than that of hard disks and it is also byte-addressable like DRAM. In this paper, we explore the implications of employing NVM as primary storage for DBMS. In other words, we investigate the modifications necessary to be applied on a traditional relational DBMS to take advantage of NVM features. As a case study, we have modified the storage engine (SE) of PostgreSQL enabling efficient use of NVM hardware. We detail the necessary changes and challenges such modifications entail and evaluate them using a comprehensive emulation platform. Results indicate that our modified SE reduces query execution time by up to 40% and 14.4% when compared to disk and NVM storage, with average reductions of 20.5% and 4.5%, respectively.

NanoStreams explores the design, implementation, and system software stack of micro-servers aimed at processing data in-situ and in real time. These micro-servers can serve the emerging Edge computing ecosystem, namely the provisioning of advanced computational, storage, and networking capability near data sources to achieve both low latency event processing and high throughput analytical processing, before considering off-loading some of this processing to high-capacity data centres. Nano Streams explores a scale-out micro-server architecture that can achieve equivalent QoS to that of conventional rack-mounted servers for high-capacity data centres, but with dramatically reduced form factors and power consumption. To this end, Nano Streams introduces novel solutions in programmable & configurable hardware accelerators, as well as the system software stack used to access, share, and program those accelerators. Our Nano Streams micro-server prototype has demonstrated 5.5 x higher energy-efficiency than a standard Xeon Server. simulations of the micro server's memory system extended to leverage hybrid DDR/NVM main memory indicated 5x higher energy-efficiency than a conventional DDR-based system.

With the rise of software system complexity, developers rely more on a modular approach to system design to reduce development cost. However, as a result, integrating a real-Time system becomes a challenge. To be able to properly integrate the system, software developers arc required to provide software characteristics such as the execution times of their components to ensure the correct timing behaviour of the overall system. Generally, engineers rely on profilers available on their workstations to collect execution times of software. Yet, the final target architecture is usually vastly different from that of the workstation. Furthermore, the fact that the target platform is mostly inaccessible at design time calls for tools that can estimate the execution time of components on a wide range of architectures with reasonable cost. In this paper, we propose a methodology that relies on (1) fast simulation techniques and (2) analytical tools that build predictive models to estimate the execution times of components on a target architecture with minimum detail. We show that the approach is able to predict the execution times of a set of benchmarks when migrated from a reference architecture to a target platform with comparable accuracy to simulation, while being 2 orders of magnitude faster. © 2016 Society for modeling & simulation international (SCS).

A fundamental challenge in large-scale cloud networks and data centers is to achieve highly efficient server utilization and limit energy consumption, while providing excellent user-perceived performance in the presence of uncertain and time-varying demand patterns. Auto-scaling provides a popular paradigm for automatically adjusting service capacity in response to demand while meeting performance targets, and queue-driven auto-scaling techniques have been widely investigated in the literature. In typical data center architectures and cloud environments however, no centralized queue is maintained, and load balancing algorithms immediately distribute incoming tasks among parallel queues. In these distributed settings with vast numbers of servers, centralized queue-driven auto-scaling techniques involve a substantial communication overhead and major implementation burden, or may not even be viable at *** by the above issues, we propose a joint auto-scaling and load balancing scheme which does not require any global queue length information or explicit knowledge of system parameters, and yet provides provably near-optimal service elasticity. We establish the fluid-level dynamics for the proposed scheme in a regime where the total traffic volume and nominal service capacity grow large in proportion. The fluid-limit results show that the proposed scheme achieves asymptotic optimality in terms of user-perceived delay performance as well as energy consumption. Specifically, we prove that both the waiting time of tasks and the relative energy portion consumed by idle servers vanish in the limit. At the same time, the proposed scheme operates in a distributed fashion and involves only constant communication overhead per task, thus ensuring scalability in massive data center operations. Extensive simulation experiments corroborate the fluid-limit results, and demonstrate that the proposed scheme can match the user performance and energy consumption of state-of-the-a
