Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) involve communication, computation, and control through heterogeneous and widely distributed physical devices and computational components. The close interactions of these systems with the physical world make it difficult to model and simulate using traditional embedded system modeling and simulation technology. In this paper we address the main technical challenges on system simulation taking into account by the heterogeneity and integration of computation and physical processes characters of CPS, and provide a new interface based simulation modeling method and its corresponding co-simulation framework. We use Simulink to establish the physical continuous dynamic model, use UML to establish the discrete event-driven model, and then integrate the Simulink model into UML model by code fusion technology to implement co-simulation. A lunar rover example is implemented to validate the proposed method. © 2013 IEEE.

Low energy consumption has become one of the most important topics in computing. With single CPUs consuming as much as 115 Watt, engineers have been looking for ways to reduce energy consumption while maintaining high computational performance. Often wide SIMD architectures are used to achieve this, exploiting data parallelism to keep the required clock frequency low for a given compute constraint. In this paper, we propose a wide SIMD architecture with explicit datapath to further optimize energy efficiency without sacrificing computation power. To have a detailed comparison, both the proposed wide SIMD architecture and its transparent bypassing counterpart are implemented in HDL and synthesized with a TSMC 40nm low power library. The power estimation is derived from actual toggle rates generated by post-synthesis simulation. Our experimental results show that with explicit bypassing the overall energy consumption can be reduced up to 44% compared to the corresponding SIMD architecture with transparent bypassing.

In this paper, we present a metamodel for specifying redundable software and hardware architectures. This metamodel takes into account the constraints on the number of redundant elements, the number of allowed failures, the execution times and allocation constraints. From such a specification, we generate all possible structural configurations. Then, we check that each of these configurations can be scheduled. This has been implemented as a tool chain relying on Alloy, SynDEx, and model transformations in Eclipse/EMF. This work allows system architects to explore different hardware and software architectures to implement different redundancy policies. It has been applied on a simple case study from the Ariane V launcher.

Multiprocessor systems-on-chip (MPSoC) are now considered first-class citizens both in the embedded systems and in the high-performance computing arenas, in the form of specialized or general-purpose accelerators. Programming models for such systems is currently a hot research topic, and as a general rule require deep programmer knowledge of the underlying hardware architecture. In this paper we present the implementation of OpenMP, one of the most intuitive and productive programming models, on the STHORM accelerator. This particular platform provides a shared-memory substrate which OpenMP requires. An innovative feature of our design is the deployment of the OpenMP model both at the host and the fabric sides, in a seamless way, which provides the programmer with a simple but effective interface for offloading and executing OpenMP kernels on the MPSoC. The optimized runtime environment provides full OpenMP support despite its small footprint (less than 10KB for a 16-core cluster) and can sustain close-to-ideal speedups in computationally intensive applications. We detail on design issues we faced along with their solutions, given the limited available resources.

In this paper, we describe a processor architecture tailored to mixed-radix4/2/3 FFT algorithm. The proposed design supports all FFT sizes, namely 128-2048/1536, required by the LTE applications. The processor is based on the Transport Triggered Architecture processor architecture, which was customized with a set of function units, designed especially for the application at hand. The processor has been synthesized on an ASIC technology and both energy-efficiency and performance have been evaluated. The developed processor is programmable but shows energy-efficiency comparable to fixed-function ASIC implementations.

For reactive embedded software - designed by composing existing reactive components - ensuring correctness is not straightforward. The possibility of deadlock across components, mismatch in temporal behaviors at the connected interface signals, etc., could lead to non-reactivity or subtle bugs. Behavioral interface theories have been proposed for checking compatibility of components when reactive modules are being composed. Depending on the models of computation, various intermediate notions of behavioral interfaces may be defined. In the case of polychronous components, the clock relations and the data dependencies at the interfaces are usually used for checking compatibility. However, if the behavior of a component is time variant, these abstractions are insufficient to establish correctness of composition. To capture time varying behavior, we propose to add an automaton based abstraction based on predicates abstraction. This paper describes the extraction of the abstraction, along with proofs of equivalence and the description of a practical implementation of the technique.

Recently introduced processors such as Tilera's Tile Gx100 and Intel's 48-core SCC have delivered on the promise of high performance per watt in manycore processors, making these architectures ostensibly as attractive for low-power embedded processors as for cloud services. However, these architectures space-multiplex the microarchitectural resources between many threads to increase utilization, which leads to potentially large and varying levels of interference. This decorrelates CPU-time from actual application progress and decreases the ability of traditional software to accurately track and finely control application progress, hindering the adoption of manycore processors in embedded computing. In this paper we propose Progress Time as the counterpart of CPU-time in space-multiplexed systems and show how it can be used to track application progress. We also introduce TimeCube, a manycore embedded processor that uses dynamic execution isolation and shadow performance modeling to provide an accurate online measurement of each application's Progress Time. Our evaluation shows that a 32-core TimeCube processor can track application progress with less than 1% error even in the presence of a 6× average worst-case slowdown. TimeCube also uses Progress Times to perform online architectural resource management that leads to a 36% improvement in throughput compared to existing microarchitectural resource allocation schemes. Overall, the results argue for adding the requisite microarchitectural structures to support Progress Time in manycore chips for embedded systems.

Reliability and flexibility are among the key required features of a framework used to model a system. Existing approaches to design resource-constrained, soft-real time systems either provide guarantees for output quality or account for loss in the system, but not both. We propose two independent solutions where each modeling technique has both the above mentioned characteristics. We present a probabilistic analytical framework and a statistical model checking approach to design system-on-chips for low-cost multimedia systems. We apply the modeling techniques to size the output buffer in a video decoder. The results shows that, for our stochastic design metric, the analytical framework upper bounds (and relatively accurate) compare to the statistical model checking technique. Also, we observed significant reduction in resource usage (such as output buffer size) with tolerable loss in output quality.

Streaming applications can efficiently exploit multiprocessors architectures by means of pipelined parallelism, but designing this type of applications can be an hard task. Different subproblems have indeed to be solved: partitioning, mapping, scheduling and pipeline stage assignment. For this reason, high level abstraction models are adopted during design flow since they simplify this process by hiding most of the architectural details. Synchronous Data Flow (SDF) graphs, widely adopted to describe streaming applications, naturally model only their partitioning, so they usually have to be integrated with other types of representations. In this paper Pipelined Application modeling (PAM), a methodology to create a Synchronous Data Flow graph describing all the aspects of a pipelined application, is presented. The methodology starts from the SDF graph describing the partitioning of the application and enriches it with new actors and channels detailing the mapping, the scheduling and the pipeline stage assignment of the considered solution. The obtained SDF graph, describing all the aspects of the solution in a formal and compact way, facilitates the evaluation of different solutions during design space exploration.

Sensor nodes in many Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) architectures are supposed to deliver sensed data to a gateway node on the body. To satisfy the data delivery requirements, the network needs to adapt itself to the changes in connection status of the body nodes to the gateway. As a prerequisite, Link Quality Estimation (LQE) needs to be done to detect the connection status of the nodes. The quality of links in WBANs is highly time-varying. The LQE technique should be agile to react fast to such link quality dynamics while avoiding frequent fluctuations to reduce the network adaptation overhead. In this paper, we present an empirical study on using different LQE methods for detecting the connection status of body nodes to the gateway in WBANs. A set of experiments using 16 wireless motes deployed on a body are performed to log the behavior of the wireless links. We explore the trade-offs made by each LQE method in terms of agility, stability, and reliability in detecting connection changes by analyzing the experimental data. Moreover, different LQE methods are used in an adaptive multi-hop WBAN mechanism, as a case study, and their impact on the Quality-of-Services (QoS) are investigated. © 2013 ACM.
