GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is emerging as an efficient and scalable accelerator for data-parallel workloads in various applications ranging from tablet PCs to HPC (High Performance Computing) mainframes. Unlike traditional 3D graphics rendering, general-purpose compute applications demand stringent assurance of reliability. Therefore, single error tolerance schemes such as SECDED (Single Error Correcting Double Error Detecting) code are being rapidly introduced to high-end GPUs targeting high-performance general-purpose computing. However, relative fault sensitivity and error contribution of critical on-chip memory structures such as active mask stack (AMS), register file (REG) and local memory (MEM) are yet to be studied. Also, implications of single error tolerance on various GPGPU (General Purpose computing on GPU) workloads have not been quantitatively analyzed to reveal its relative cost/fault-tolerance efficiency. To address this issue, a novel Monte Carlo simulation framework has been explored in this work to enumerate and analyze well-converged fault injection data. Instead of estimating AVF (Architectural Vulnerability Factor) of each structure individually, we have injected faults to a whole memory (AMS, REG and MEM combined) in a structure-oblivious fashion. Then, we further categorized and analyzed each structure's relative fault sensitivity and error contribution factor. Finally, we have studied implications of single error tolerance on the memory structures by further considering eight different possible ECC profiles. Results show that relative fault sensitivity and error contribution of REG is highest among the considered memory structures; therefore, ECC (Error Correction Code) protection of REG is most critical and cost-effective.

We present a toolchain to model and automatically generate executable simulation code for networked embedded systems applications. First, we provide a UML extension for modeling the network in distributed embedded systems. Second, we present a toolchain to automatically translate the UML model into an intermediate description and then to SystemC executable code. Finally, the developed simulation framework is based on the state-of-the-art network simulator named SCNSL which also provides a comprehensive library of well-tested simulation models for communication networks. The framework is explained on two different case studies related to wired/wireless network applications, one for home automation and the other for agriculture applications.

Timed discrete-event (DE) is an actor-oriented formalism for modeling timed systems. A DE model is a network of actors consuming/producing timed events from/to a set of input/output channels. In this paper we study a basic DE model, called deterministic DE (DDE), where actors are simple constant-delay components, and two extensions of DDE: NDE, where actors are non-deterministic delays, and DETA, where actors are either deterministic delays or timed automata. We investigate verification questions on DE models and examine expressiveness relationships between the DE models and timed automata. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

The EU FP7 SWAN-iCare project aims at developing an integrated autonomous device for the monitoring and the personalized management of chronic wounds, mainly diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers. Most foot and leg ulcers are caused by diabetes and vascular problems respectively but a remarkable number of them are also due to the co-morbidity influence of many other diseases (e.g. kidney disease, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, inflammatory bowel disease). More than 10 million people in Europe suffer from chronic wounds, a number which is expected to grow due to the aging of the population. The core of the project is the fabrication of a conceptually new wearable negative pressure device equipped with Information and Communication Technologies. Such device will allow users to: (a) accurately monitor many wound parameters via non-invasive integrated micro-sensors, (b) early identify infections and (c) remotely provide an innovative personalized two-line therapy via non-invasive micro-actuators to supplement the negative pressure wound therapy. This paper describes the main components of the SWAN-iCare system and its potential impact in the area of wound management.

With the development of linux and μC/O dual-core embedded operating system, its research areas have been broadened wider and wider. Priced timed automata and statistical model checking

The notions of priced timed automata (PTA) and energy games (EG) provide useful modeling formalisms for energy-aware and energy-harvesting embedded systems. We review these formalisms and a range of associated decision problems covering cost-optimal reachability, model-checking and cost-bounded infinite strategies. Decidability of several of these problems require tight bounds on the number of clocks and cost variables. Thus, we turn to statistical model checking (SMC), which has emerged as a highly scalable simulation-based "approximate" validation technique. In a series of recent work we have developed a natural stochastic semantics for PTAs allowing for statistical model checking to be performed. The resulting techniques have been implemented in Uppaal-smc, and applied to the performance analysis of a number of systems ranging from real-time scheduling, mixed criticality systems, sensor networks, energy aware systems and systems biology. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Open Compute Language (OpenCL) has been proposed as a platform-independent parallel execution framework to target multicores, graphics processing units (GPUs), digital signal processors (DSPs), and other custom accelerators. Traditionally OpenCL is designed to scale across system generations by having each new model increase the available resources: processing cores, register file entries, and shared (localized) physical memory. However, when evaluating all potential models capable of running OpenCL the numerous performance trade-offs associated with these competing resources makes for a large exploration space. Specifically there are advantages to systematically analyzing the OpenCL parallel expressions to eliminate processor elements that constrain the overall design. We have designed an analysis tool for evaluating OpenCL kernels and the potential processor configurations in FPGA-based multiprocessor systems-on-chip (MPSoC) designs. The Flexible OpenCL (FlexCL) system determines integrated hardware-software customization opportunities related to processor design across sets of OpenCL applications. The paper provides an evaluation of various OpenCL components synthesized to FPGA-based multicore design alternatives. © 2013 ACM.

One of fixed-wing aircraft type is the fixed-wing unmanned aircraft or fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The UAV flies without a pilot in the aircraft. All aircraft movements are controlled by an embedded computer or a remote control. The whole complex UAV control system can be decomposed into several separated sections to simplify the control design process. The three-dimensional position control was simplified to one-dimensional height control and two-dimensional navigation control. The UAV motion composed of three force components and three moment components that make up the six Degrees of Freedom (6 DoF). In the modeling process, all motions of the aircraft are considered linear and have multiple inputs and outputs (MIMO). The controller used was a PID controller which is tuned using Ziegler-Nichols method. Implementation of the Hardware-in-the-Loop-simulation (HILS) can be done after the design of control systems for UAV is completed. The design of HILS structure was done with the help of MATLAB software. The controller that has been designed previously was implemented into the Ardupilot mega hardware. The design and implementation of PID control system with Ziegler-Nichols tuning method for the longitudinal and lateral directional dimensions, which include angular rate control, attitude control, altitude control and navigation control was able to stabilize an unstable system or to improve the system response.
