Instruction set simulators are indispensable tools for both the design of programmable architectures and software development. However, due to a constantly increasing processor complexity and the frequent demand for cycle-accurate models, such simulators have become defectively slow. The principle of compiled simulation addresses this shortcoming. Compiled simulators make use of a priori knowledge to accelerate simulation, with the highest efficiency achieved by employing static scheduling techniques. In the past, such statically scheduled simulators have only been implemented for specific DSP architectures. The approach presented discusses the application of static scheduling techniques to retargetable simulation tools based on the processor description language LISA. Principles and implementation issues are discussed, and results are presented for two selected processor architectures.

This paper discusses the issues related to the correctness of agile manufacturing systems with distributed architectures. The corresponding development of software engineering methods targets the goal of easy-reconfigurable, self-organized software similar to that of the hardware. However, existing methods of software validation (manual testing or computer-aided simulation) are too slow to keep up with the pace of reconfigurations. In this paper we present an approach and a software tools to incorporate the formal verification to the practice of control engineering. The software package "verification environment for distributed applications" (VEDA) has been developed for model-based simulation and verification with a homogeneous graphical user interface. Net condition event systems are used for the modeling. VEDA deals with distributed controllers as defined in IEC 61499 and automatically generates the formal model of the controller with the given source code.

A clock energy model is incorporated into a cycle-accurate energy simulator for an embedded architecture, which also resembles processor cores present in System-on-a-Chip (SoC) designs. This framework is used to study and quantify the influence on clock energy of several architectural-level decisions and their relative impact on the overall system energy. The design cases include various cache architectures and support for clock gating at different levels (global and local). At the software level, the influence on clock energy of power-oriented memory compiler optimizations is assessed.

The current trend of systems on silicon is leading to System-on-Chips with embedded software and hardware components. Design simplification is becoming necessary to respect the target time-to-market of SoCs, and this goal can be obtained by using predesigned IP-cores. However, their correct integration in a design implies more complex verification problems. The SystemC language allows one to create and integrate accurate models of software algorithms, hardware architectures and interfaces for SoCs. In this paper, characteristics of the language are exploited to define a design verification framework for integration-test of IP-cores. Intellectual property of cores is guaranteed by adopting-a client/server simulation architecture and by allowing functional test generation on faulty IP-core models without disclosing their internal structure. Moreover, the methodology can be applied to mixed descriptions based on VHDL and SystemC, since an abstraction layer has been defined allowing clients and/or servers to be indifferently described in VHDL or SystemC.

We describe the application of several neural network architectures to the problem of simulating and predicting the dynamic behavior of complex economic time series. We use several neural network models and training algorithms to compare the results and decide which one is best for this application. We also compare the simulation results with fuzzy logic models and the traditional approach of using a statistical model. In this case, we use real time series of prices of consumer goods to test our models. Real prices of tomato and green onion in the US show complex fluctuations in time and are very complicated to predict with traditional statistical approaches. For this reason, we have chosen neural networks and fuzzy logic to simulate and predict the evolution of these prices in the US market.

This paper surveys some recent approaches using computational intelligence (namely fuzzy logic and evolutionary algorithms) for manufacturing system control. In particular, the paper focuses on approaches oriented toward the multi-agent system design paradigms. Furthermore, this paper summarizes the results of a simulation comparison between two fuzzy multi-agent architectures for job flow control, differing for the degree of interactions between agents, on a detailed case study that was recently proposed in the literature to benchmark distributed multi-agent control approaches.

One of the challenging aspects of utilizing magnetorheological (MR) dampers to achieve high level of performance is the development of accurate models and control algorithms that can take advantages of the unique characteristics of these devices because of their inherent nonlinearity. In this paper, the authors proposed a direct identification and an inverse dynamic modeling method for MR dampers using recurrent neural networks. Based on the above neural network models, a configuration for the MR damper controller is also explored. The command voltage for the MR damper can be obtained through the neural network model according to the desired damping force determined from the system controller. The architectures and the learning methods of the direct and inverse dynamic neural network models for the MR damper are presented, and some simulation results about the MR damper controller are discussed.

Temperature has proven to be an effective stress condition, commonly used to stress memory devices and to detect special types of failure mechanisms. In this paper a new approach is presented where temperature is used as a test parameter to increase the fault coverage of specific tests. This is done using defect injection and simulation of a memory model at different temperatures. The analysis presents new types of detection conditions for memories and evaluates the impact of temperature on these conditions.

We consider the problem of searching for an unpredictable moving target, using a robot that lacks a map of the environment, lacks the ability to construct a map, and has imperfect navigation ability. We present a complete algorithm, which yields a motion strategy for the robot that guarantees the elusive target will be detected, if such a strategy exists. It is assumed that the robot has an omnidirectional sensing device that is used to detect moving targets and also discontinuities in depth data in a 2D environment. We also show that the robot has the same problem solving power as a robot that has a complete map and perfect navigation abilities. The algorithm has been implemented in simulation, and some examples are shown.
