The "PICAR" project is based on "Prometheus Prochip" experience and results. The goal is to design an embedded multi sensors collision avoidance system for automotive application. The system includes sensors like video camera, ultrasonic sensors, a PC hardware computer, a CAN/sup 2/ network and a dedicated software for signal and image processing, data fusion and AI expert system. The design of such a system is difficult under real time constraints. Therefore, a simulator is a good solution to test different parts of the system and then to help to choose the overall architecture. However simulating all the embedded architecture in real-time becomes a very complex work. It is necessary to have an environment simulator where sensors can be virtually implemented. The data are then processed leading to results without hardware costs. The designed environment software allows the simulation of physical sensors, and also the emulation of these sensors. The simulator is interfaced to the physical embedded hardware by a network bridge. So, we can emulate some sensors to experiment data processing on the physical embedded PICAR computer. This paper presents the physical smart car PICAR and its embedded system, the virtual world simulator. We explain how we can mix the virtual world (produced by virtual sensors) and real world (physical embedded system) to implement some scenarios (like automatic parking) and to validate the physical architecture. An alternate goal can be to design customized sensors.

Digital technologies can offer a safe training environment for familiarisation with new surgical procedures. To enhance access to and control of these virtual environments, a Java-based interface is used. The Exeter Virtual Worlds (EVW) shoulder arthroscopy simulator is designed to teach surgical pattern recognition skills via an interactive medium, using a thin client via a distributed computer architecture. The Java-based interface has been developed to enable the EVW system to be operated remotely from within a declarative (factual) Web-based training environment. By using Java for the control interface, it was possible for the surgeon to operate the virtual environment from a remote machine using familiar windows-style controls, which a focus group confirmed to be adequate for the task. The development of networking computer architectures will assist the assimilation of multiple sources and media. The interface now offers the opportunity to collect statistically significant data from such simulation systems embedded in an educational environment.

An object-oriented modeling infrastructure using the Java-based, Silk simulation classes is defined that enables the simulation of multitasking, distributed systems using symmetric multiprocessors. The simulation infrastructure is being used to evaluate alternative architectures for embedded, distributed systems. We show how the underlying structure is adapted to several different applications, including various Internet applications. The paper describes the infrastructure, its robustness, and the application of the model to produce insights for a system under design. The simulation infrastructure enables a high fidelity representation of the internal complexity of the application on each processing node, the operating system behavior, and the disks and network. The simple yet powerful representation leverages the use of the Silk entity-thread architecture to achieve a simulation architecture that maps to the actual system architecture in both conceptual design and processing sequence. The model has been validated through instrumentation of the evolving target system.

Scheduling simulators are useful in the design exploration phase of the development of reactive embedded real-time computer systems. However, most conventional scheduling simulators do not fulfil all the requirements needed for the modeling of application functionality and system environment. Other system modeling approaches exist for this purpose, but these usually do not deal with scheduling aspects. This paper proposes an new approach to the modeling and simulation of both functional and scheduling aspects of real-time systems. The new approach is based on Petri nets and uses a principle called delegated execution. The main idea is to associate time progress with an explicit scheduler subnet instead of the task structure. Advantages of this approach are the ability to model preemptive scheduling, to combine an application with several schedulers, and to reuse standard scheduler models. The modeling methodology is demonstrated using the well-known mine drainage system case study.

This paper shows the state of art teleoperation and simulation systems and proposes some possible network architectures devoted to the development of such systems. A method for the optimization of robot tasks is also suggested. The application proposed can teleoperate a robot arm with five degrees of freedom through Internet by using a previous simulation system and visual feedback. This simulation can be accessed simultaneously by different workers. As a result, the number of robots required can be reduced on new applications or dangerous environments.

The design of modern high-performance embedded systems is challenging. Power and size constraints limit hardware size, while performance requirements demand algorithm-specific architectures. A model-integrated approach can be used in the design capture and synthesis of these systems. A domain-specific graphical system design environment allows the capture of system requirements, design information and alternatives, and of available processing resources in the form of models. A model interpretation process generates architecture specifications and compilable code. A typical first step in designing complex systems is to develop a simulation-based prototype. After functional verification of the prototype, system components are implemented, each tailored to a particular target platform. Only after all components are implemented can system integration be addressed, often uncovering inconsistencies between components and forcing costly redesign. This paper describes an extension of a model-integrated design environment and runtime system. simulation-based components are included in system models. A simulation engine is interfaced to a runtime environment, allowing simulation components to run in the loop with nonsimulation based components. The extended environment allows prototype synthesis from system models and automates the integration of implemented components into the system. Further, the extended environment provides the designer with a powerful visualization and debugging tool.

Many systems that support group activities utilize computer and network technologies so that people in different places or at different times can communicate with each other. In this paper, we propose a system called ePro for supporting face-to-face collaboration by integrating physical and virtual worlds. In order to enhance interactions among group members and raise their engagement, ePro connects a sensor-embedded board and a computer simulation. In our current implementation, ePro is used to discuss urban planning and environmental problems. Group members collaboratively construct a town by placing a piece, such as a house, on a sensor-embedded board (physical world). The computer simulation program automatically recognizes the arrangement of pieces on the board. It then visualizes environmental changes to the town on the board through simulations (virtual world). The visualization shown to the group members amplifies the interaction among them and gives them feedback for re-designing the town on the board. In order to evaluate the effects of supporting group activities by combining physical and virtual worlds, preliminary experiments with ePro were carried out.

This paper explores the problem of efficiently ordering interprocessor communication operations in statically-scheduled multiprocessors for iterative dataflow graphs. In most digital signal processing applications, the throughput of the system is significantly affected by communication costs. By explicitly modeling these costs within an effective graph-theoretic analysis framework, we show that ordered transaction schedules can significantly outperform self-timed schedules even when synchronization costs are low. However, we also show that when communication latencies are non-negligible, finding an optimal transaction order given a static schedule is an NP-complete problem, and that this intractability holds both under iterative and non-iterative execution. We develop new heuristics for finding efficient transaction orders, and perform an experimental comparison to gauge the performance of these heuristics.

Component-based synthesis of embedded systems will lead to the reuse of a vast library of hardware and software components and also facilitate rapid prototyping. However it is still low key, a primary reason being the lack of a systematic attempt at the development of automatic component matching algorithms. The main task of such an algorithm is to map a design function to a device from a library of system-level components. In this paper we propose a novel notion of simulation called forced simulation to formalize the correspondence between a function and a device. What distinguishes forced simulation from other techniques is the idea of forcing via an external interface, which can be automatically synthesized, and is useful for adapting the system level component to the given design functionality. We propose a new component matching algorithm based enforced simulation and illustrate it via the example of mapping a lathe controller port to Intel 82C55 in mode 2.
