We present a modular system architecture for simplifying the signal level fusion and sensor configuration of multiple sensors with different sample rates. The fusion process is subdivided into three modules: synchronization, adaptation and fusion. Methods for all three stages are proposed and compared with classical approaches. All sensor sample times, even if they are not periodic, are propagated to the next sample time of the control unit. In the adaptation module we focus on the double integration of biased signals and the determination of the unknown initial conditions. We distinguish four different types of sensors and propose sensor models suitable for off-line simulation that can be automatically changed to interface blocks in case of an online simulation with real sensors. All methods needed for handling our system architecture are embedded in a Matlab toolbox.

Two simple models, Model-A and Model-B, are described as the first step toward fusing computational and symbolic processing. Model-B is an extension of the Model-A. Each of them consists of two layers. The lower layer is a neural network in which Q-learning is simulated. The inputs are the state variables, and the outputs are the Q-values for each action. It is tuned to update and store the Q-table. The upper layer watches the activity in the lower layer to identify the group of nodes that are activated when some action in the lower layer obtains a high reward from the environment. In this way, new symbols emerge that are embedded in the lower layer to speed up the learning. Model-B is extended so as to learn more complex concepts quickly. When an important concept is learned, the corresponding symbol is generalized and embedded in a different place at a lower level. simulation demonstrated that symbol emergence and the forced application of these symbols in Q-learning greatly improves the performance of players playing a simple football game.

The use of intelligent systems to perform computer simulation in studying evolving behaviour is, we believe, beneficial for researchers interested in understanding the complexity and behaviour of the algorithms used in simulating evolution through computational learning. Intelligent systems based on connectionist networks or connectionism use computer simulation to talk about human consciousness, thought and evolution. We present a cognitive modelling study using neural networks to simulate childrens' progression of language capabilities during the crucial two-year period (9-24 months) of child language development. We argue that in order to simulate the uniquely human language learning, it is very important to assess the aptness of connectionist architectures for cognitive modelling. We provide a connectionist interpretation to the basic aspects of cognition which are relevant to the simulation of child language development, thereby providing a mapping of psycholinguistic notions to connectionist concepts.

A high accuracy system for transistor-level static timing analysis is presented. Accurate static timing verification requires that individual gate and interconnect delays be accurately calculated. At the sub-micron level, calculating gate and interconnect delays using delay models can result in reduced accuracy. Instead, the proposed method calculates delays through numerical integration using an embedded circuit simulator. It takes into account short circuit current and carefully chooses the set of conditions that results in a tight upper bound of the worst case delay for each gate. Similar repeating transistor configurations of gates in the circuit are automatically identified and a novel interpolation based caching scheme quickly computes gate delays from the delays of similar gates. A tight object code level integration with a commercial high speed transistor level circuit simulator allows efficient invocation of the simulation.

The growing number of applications for 3D graphics and imaging systems in the mass market requires the customized approach to the design of high-performance 3D graphics and imaging system architectures. That fact coupled with the strong trends to industrial standardization of graphics API, such as OpenGL, leads to enhanced portability for imaging and graphics applications. The progress on the hardware support of API functionality gives a real possibility to use a top-down approach in the design of custom graphics/imaging systems based on the mixed hardware/software implementation of the OpenGL architecture. Software simulation is a relatively cheap and fast way for initial graphics architecture template development and evaluation to acquire the structure and parameters that can be used later for HDL elaboration and simulation. This paper discusses a 3D graphics and imaging system architecture model implementation based on OpenGL API hardware support simulation. The object-oriented approach has been used for this development of analytic and software models simulating hardware units on different stages of the graphics pipeline. The Interactive Imaging System Architecture Composer has been developed in this project for fast run-time simulation management, data acquisition and interpretation. The expandable set of architecture templates uses a reconfigurable shared library of "virtual hardware units" simulating the different hardware structures for graphics and image processing.

This paper presents a methodology to retarget the technique of compiled simulation for Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) using the modeling language LISA. In the past, the principle of compiled simulation as means for speeding up simulators has only been implemented for specific DSP architectures. The new approach presented here discusses methods of integrating compiled simulation techniques to retargetable simulation tools. The principle and the implementation are discussed in this paper and results for the TI TMS320C6201 DSP are presented.

This paper describes original research efforts in the design, simulation, and development of nanotechnology-based molecular test equipment (MTE). This is a research effort for testing printed circuit boards independent of traditional automatic test equipment (ATE) through the fabrication of MTE within integrated circuits (ICs). The MTE is embedded within the IC substrate and encapsulated within nanoprobes that connect between the surface and the substrate of the IC at various functional areas. A process is followed whereby IC device simulation is performed to assess the electrical, chemical, and structural properties of integrated and adjacent substrate devices. Through this approach the nominal and failed device performance parameters of interest to substrate-based MTE are found. Discussion of the development and application of MTE within IC architectures is provided, including such topics as the effect of substrate composition on the design and realization of MTE, interfaces between MTE and IC devices, and reporting of MTE results to the IC surface and technician. Potential application areas within different device functions will also be identified. A chemical structure diagram is also provided to illustrate the implementation of MTE using discrete device configurations with MTE-augmented logic.

The strongly partitioned real time system (SP-RTS) provides temporal and spatial partitioning for its integrated real time applications. The SP-RTS architecture adopts a two-level hierarchical scheduling mechanism. In the lower level, multiple partitions (applications) are dispatched under a cyclic scheduling, whereas, in the higher level, multiple periodic tasks of each partition are scheduled according to a fixed priority algorithm. The authors focus on designing algorithms for online scheduling of aperiodic tasks in the SP-RTS environment. The Distance Constraint guaranteed Dynamic Cyclic (DC/sup 2/) scheduler that is proposed uses these basic operations: Left Sliding (LS), Right Putting (RP), and Compacting. These operations dynamically schedule aperiodic tasks within a distance-constrained cyclic schedule. We show that the dynamic applications of these operations do not violate the distance constraint characteristics of a partition cyclic schedule. In addition, the slack time calculation of these dynamic operations can be applied for scheduling hard aperiodic tasks. With the simulation studies, we observed that the DC/sup 2/ can result in a significant performance enhancement in terms of the average response time of soft aperiodic tasks and the acceptance rate for hard aperiodic tasks.

Recent advances in developing a new branch of soft computing (SC) developed for the control of mechanical devices is reported. Instead of using the architectures of traditional SC it is based on uniform structures obtained from the mathematical framework of classical mechanics. In connection with that the concepts of "minimum operation symplectizing algorithm" (MOSA) and "situation-dependent partial system identification", were developed. The advantages are as follows: (1) a priori known and limited number of parameters; (2) parameter tuning is replaced by simple, explicit, finite, and standard algebraic computations; and (3) to refine the "core algorithm" several interpolation techniques can be incorporated in it. To illustrate its operation simulation examples are given for a special 3-DOF robot arm under a significant environmental interaction.

The Web and its related technologies have made possible new means of access to and visualization of information. As such, it has shaped the structure of systems in many domains, from enterprise, mission critical e-business to distributed, embedded systems. Although experience with developing and deploying quality systems for the Web, by the Web and to the Web is a fairly recent activity, it appears that there are a relatively small number of canonical architectures that work. It is possible and desirable to codify those architectural patterns in order to offer a vehicle for controlling the development of a Web system over its lifetime, and to accelerate the development of new Web systems. The UML is well suited to representing these architectural patterns. In this presentation, we will examine the nature of Web-centric systems, and will study the common architectural patterns that apply. We will also examine the dozen or so underlying mechanisms upon which these architectures build, and show how both these architectural patterns and design patterns can be represented in the UML. We will conclude by addressing how these representations can be used in the lifecycle, supporting the notions of executable architectures and round trip engineering. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.
