System-level design space exploration (DSE), which is performed early in the design process, is of eminent importance to the design of complex multi-processor embedded system architectures. During system-level DSE, system parameters like, e.g., the number and type of processors, the type and size of memories, or the mapping of application tasks to architectural resources, are considered. simulation-based DSE, in which different design instances are evaluated using system-level simulations, typically are computationally costly. Even using high-level simulations and efficient exploration algorithms, the simulation time to evaluate design points forms a real bottleneck in such DSE. Therefore, the vast design space that needs to be searched requires effective design space pruning techniques. This paper presents a technique to reduce the number of simulations needed during system-level DSE. More specifically, we propose an iterative design space pruning methodology based on static throughput analysis of different application mappings. By interleaving these analytical throughput estimations with simulations, our hybrid approach can significantly reduce the number of simulations that are needed during the process of DSE.

This paper describes the development of the IAB-60/60 storage battery simulator especially designed for testing the power supply systems of different types of spacecrafts. The simulator features an embedded microprocessor control system consisting of a central processor and a voltage and current control device. The microprocessor control system provides the required output characteristics and control of the internal parameters of the simulator and supports the connection between the simulator and the external personal computer through a serial interface.

This paper proves feasibility of a fully distributed automation design of Baggage Handling systems automation. The proposed design methodology leverages IEC 61499 Function Blocks as a supporting architecture. Each physical element of the BHS, such as a conveyor is represented by a Function Block that encapsulates functionality into a single re-usable module. The proposed solution demonstrates such benefits as flexibility, fault resilience and design re-use. A graph based representation of the system layout was used for rendering of the visualisation. The solution was prototyped using ISaGRAF - the first commercial implementation of IEC 61499 and tested on a network of 50 networked control nodes, each representing an embedded controller of a single conveyor or of a group of conveyors. The Ethernet communications framework was tested to confirm the appropriate levels of network utilisation and potential sources of delay were identified. This design approach can be regarded as cyber-physical since it naturally combines simulation models into the design life-cycle, providing ready to use simulation within the design framework.

Electronic textile research often centers on the concept of introducing electronics to apparel such as shirts jackets, gloves, and health vests. Another less researched concept incorporates electronics into large textile surfaces such as carpets and upholstery. In this paper we explore methods and challenges of building a large surface area electronic textile floor for cooperative mobile device interaction. We systematically construct both a 100 ft by 50 ft textile simulation and a 3 ft by 8 ft working prototype using readily available materials. We introduce the broadly applicable embedded workload of human gait tracking as a means to defining the requirements for the textile physicals, networked computing node, and distributed execution environment subsystems. Through this effort we begin to establish a working model for combining inexpensive electronic textiles with a scalable execution environment that supports mobile device to floor interactions.

For ground-based astronomical telescopes, Image resolution is directly dependent on aperture diameter. Practically however, atmospheric turbulence disturbs incoming wavefronts and sets dramatic limitations on imaging quality, which issue led to using Adaptive Optics (AO) systems to compensate wavefront disturbance and achieve optimal resolution. With the arrival of Extremely Large Telescopes, with aperture diameter above 20 meters, High Performance Computing (HPC) techniques are required to simulate and operate AO systems. With the advent of General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU), many-core architectures of GPUs can be leveraged to accelerate AO simulation software. COMPASS (COMputing Platform for Adaptive opticS System) is an end-to-end AO simulation soft¬ware based upon Nvidia's Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) toolkit. simulations performed on state-of-the-art Nvidia DGX-1 servers equipped with 8 Tesla V100-SXM2 and Dual 20- core Intel Xeon E5-2698 v4 show a speed up factor of up to 362 as compared to YAO, a feature-equivalent software with multi¬threaded CPU architecture. The COMPASS implementation ensures compatibility with any Nvidia architecture. A speed up by 5 was measured between a DGX-1 and a comparable server with 6-year old GPUs, with no line of code changed.

Electric utility SCADA systems must be highly reliable given the potential for the SCADA system to directly contribute to load curtailment. This paper presents an analysis of SCADA system reliability in terms of its expected aggregate contribution to load curtailment on the power system. Expressing this aggregate in system minutes and applying an appropriate damage cost function then provides an annual cost measure of SCADA system reliability worth. A composite generation and transmission system reliability evaluation technique is used to perform the numerical analysis of the joint SCADA and power system model. This performs a Monte-Carlo simulation and includes an optimal power flow for enumerating grid load curtailment states and analysis of SCADA system component connectivity to determine availability of SCADA control. The application of this analysis is illustrated in a comparison of two alternative SCADA architectures. Trans Power has adopted a subtransmission SCADA architecture which utilises terminals operating off its national SCADA system. These terminals have replaced separate systems located in each area. The objective of the evaluation being to quantify the increased exposure to financial losses due to joint load curtailment.

This work is about an approach for designing control software for mechatronic and robotic machines. As all system parts (control algorithms, software infrastructure, I/O, and machine) influence each other, its total behaviour needs to be taken into account. Therefore, we use appropriate modelling formalisms, namely discrete event / discrete time for the control software and algorithm part, and differential equations for the machine / robotics part. We combine these two types of models in a co-modelling approach, supporting co-operative design of such cyber-physical systems. In this paper, the co-modelling and co-design approach is elaborated. It consists of four major steps, whereby the models in each are verified via simulation or co-simulation. It is a pure model-driven design approach, implying that all final code is generated from these verified models. This allows for better quality of the resulting embedded software. The method is illustrated using a case study. Structuring models and verification by simulation, whereby relevant simulations are set up such that they can be repeated as real experiments, is beneficial for the design work itself, i.e. making it far more effective and less error-prone.

We report the current status of our work on a new research framework for the clean-slate design of next-generation optical access (NGOA) architectures and protocols. The proposed research framework consists of two major components: A comparative analysis framework and a virtual test bed. The comparative analysis framework is based on a multivariate non-inferiority testing procedure and a notion of equivalent circuit rate (ECR); it is capable of statistically comparing multiple performance measures in an integrated way and providing quantification of the effective bandwidth for users of a candidate system with respect to a reference one based on user-perceived performances. The virtual test bed is implemented as simulation models of candidate architectures and protocols together with supporting environments providing a complete experimental platform for the comparative analysis. We review the current implementation of the virtual test bed based on OMNeT++/INET simulation framework and discuss the issues and challenges we met during initial studies together with plans and strategies to address them in the next version. To demonstrate the capability of the proposed research framework, we present preliminary results from an ongoing study of the elasticity of NGOA architectures, which show that the hybrid TDM/WDM-PON can manage the same user-perceived performances as those of the dedicated point-to-point architecture with the same line rate by varying the number of tunable transceivers for a wide range of traffic load.

Multi-core and many-core systems-on-Chip (SoC) are growing more complex than ever. Consequently, developing system models for such SoCs to guide and validate architectural and implementation decisions is becoming a daunting task. It consumes a huge amount of time and effort just to get the model up and running. Although these system models can be fairly abstracted, they still require the setup of a complicated platform to model a homogeneous or a heterogeneous mix of processing cores, a network-on-chip, cache memories, input-output interfaces as well as several other functional units. The abstraction levels for the individual constituent models can be represented at different abstraction levels forcing the need for special interfacing and simulation tools. Moreover, unified benchmarks are needed to be able to have a fair comparison between different architectures and different implementation options while at the same time target the specific application domain the SoC is being developed for. This paper explores the availability of such ecosystems and discusses the important features and capabilities that need to be provided in them. The level of abstraction and the software support in this model is also examined.

The electric vehicle and electric vehicle charger market is rapidly growing due to increased interest in carbon free. When a lot of electric vehicles and chargers are penetrated into the distribution network, various problems such as voltage drop may occur. Therefore, it is essential to accurately determine the hosting capacity of electric vehicles from the point of view of system operation. Electric vehicles have a variety of uncertainties, including arrival and departure times, state of charge and selection of charging station. To evaluate the hosting capacity of electric vehicles, these uncertainties must be taken into account. In this paper, load modeling was performed considering the uncertainty of electric vehicle, and the hosting capacity of electric vehicle was evaluated using monte carlo simulation. In addition, load modeling was performed using the actual power consumption data of buildings in Seoul National University. The network was modeled using the parameters of the actually embedded cable. Based on the modeled data, the hosting capacity was evaluated by assuming an electric vehicle based on the actual vehicle access data.
