Electronic control units (ECUs) are widely used to improve the comfort and reliability of vehicles. Due to the increasing degree of distribution and interaction of ECUs, many approaches are adopted to design the in-vehicle networks to ensure the stability and reliability of the holistic network, but none of them support the synchronous development of in-vehicle networks and software in ECUs. This paper put forward a model-based approach to design the in-vehicle networks and the software in ECUs with presenting a dependable platform compliant with OSEK/VDX specifications. The paper presents a tool-chain that covers the entire system development life-cycle including system modeling, model transformation, model analysis, network simulation, code generation, document generation and runtime instrumentation. In addition, a case study is presented to demonstrate the application of the approach. The contribution of the approach is threefold. First, the approach applies the theory of model-based design with OSEK/VDX standard in automotive electronics domain, and implements the transformation between SysML models and OSEK/VDX models through an efficient method. Second, the approach presents a method of software co-design among distributed ECUs. Third, the approach bring forward a simulation model for the system models with in-vehicle networks and provides the designer with the simulation results to optimize the design at the early time of the development

modeling and simulation of electromagnetic devices, such as mobile phones, operating at millimeter wavelengths, e.g., at 30GHz, is challenging because the dimensions of the platform are typically large as compared to the operating wavelength. In this work, we propose several strategies for addressing the issue of CPU time and memory consumption, while preserving the accuracy of the computation. This include geometry simplification as well as application of a numerical algorithm for memory reduction and GPU acceleration. Memory reduction is achieved by employing an efficient iteration-free technique called the Characteristic Basis Functions Method (CBFM) proposed in [1] , to solve problems involving a large number of degrees of freedom. The CBFM has been extensively investigated by a number of authors, including [2] , to analyze objects embedded in multi-layered media.

CPU-GPU platforms possess the potential of enhancing the performance of applications through some unique and diverse capabilities of both CPU-GPU devices. As a result, the methodologies for CPU/GPU system design space exploration for various applications are now considerably more challenging on these heterogeneous platforms. In this paper, we present a heuristic algorithm for partitioning the computation of applications between a CPU and GPU, while satisfying the user-defined constraints. Our methodology leverages the SIMD-related computing and hierarchical memory model of GPUs to optimize application mapping and allocation to CPU-GPU systems. The algorithm partitions the application, which is specified as a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG), for a CPU-GPU platform to meet the objectives specified by the user. The effectiveness of our methodology is demonstrated by efficiently partitioning and executing MJPEG decoder and benchmark applications on a CPU-GPU system.

Logic-in-Memory (LIM) architectures, particularly those based on Spin-Transfer Torque Magnetic Random-Access Memory (STT-MRAM), offer a promising solution to over-come the von-Neumann bottleneck of traditional computing platforms. The smart material implication (SIMPLY) LIM scheme has been proposed to execute computations efficiently within memory units. This paper presents reliability enhanced STT-MRAM-based SIMPLY and sFALSE operations, assessing improvements in read margin (RM) and bit error rate (BER). Furthermore, the energy efficiency of the SIMPLY scheme is evaluated for the implementation of some logic operators such as NAND, XOR, and XNOR. simulation results show that SIMPLY + scheme results to be energy efficient, while assuring a 3.7× larger RM as compared to the conventional SIMPLY.

This paper presents two schemes to improve the transmission of real-time MPEG-I video over a FDDI network. Multiple classes of MPEG-I video will be used in the study and what makes this simulation study different from the others is the different kinds of MPEG-I video data we used. These data are captured from real video programmes and we categorized these video clips according to their workload characteristics. The performance of the FDDI network is examined in terms of the maximum number of MPEG-I video streams got transmitted over the network without missing their deadlines. This simulation study observed that by employing the Intentional-delay scheme, we can improve the performance by an average of 35%. From another set of simulation experiment, when applying the Frame-grouping scheme for MPEG-I transmission, we can improve the performance up to 150%.

Cabled robotic systems have been used for a diverse set of applications such as environmental sensing, search and rescue, sports and entertainment and air vehicle simulators. In this paper, we introduce a new cabled robot- Networked Info Mechanical System for Planar actuation (NIMS-PL), with energy profiling capabilities. Accurate energy measurements supported by NIMS-PL enable path planning that optimizes the robotpsilas path subject to an upper bound on energy consumption. We performed extensive empirical validation of the optimized path planning approach in simulation using an environmental sensing application as an example. We also validated the simulation results using NIMS-PL, demonstrating significant improvements in the sensing task when accounting with accurate energy measurements as opposed to Euclidean distance, which is typically used for modeling energy spent in path traversal.

Low-power embedded system design has become extremely important in the most recent years. To fulfill system-level design requirements and time-to-market constraints, a power-driven methodology is essential during embedded system design. The aim of this paper is to introduce accurate and efficient power metrics included in a hardware/software (HW/SW) co-design environment to show the system-level partitioning and design. In order to verify the design effectiveness of hardware/software co-design synthesis, we consider the digital power dissipation methodology and its power reduction techniques. To maximize the performance of system, we developed hierarchical design technique and co-design synthesis for power efficient HW/SW co-design process. In the end, we provided simulation results for single circuit with new design vs. circuit integration with hierarchical power efficiency system (HPES), multiple circuits with new design vs. circuit integration with HPES, new design and no load vs. circuit integration with HPES, new design with load vs. circuit integration with HPES.

As implementation architectures for complex systems evolve towards heterogeneous multiprocessing, let this be on a single chip or on a geographically distributed area, the importance of communication has reached unprecedented peaks. Indeed, due to the complex nature of interaction among its components, any complex system has behaviors that may be highly unpredictable. Dealing with such behaviors requires a deep understanding of various ways to enable communication and account for complex traffic patterns among different components of the system. So far, successful design of many integrated systems has been primarily based on algorithms and design methodologies meant to work under deterministic conditions where communication is considered in an ancillary role. However, in the light of emerging systems and applications (e.g. networked cars and buildings, smart surfaces and dense networks for health monitoring, and multi-core chips at nanoscale) this deterministic, computation-centered mindset no longer offers an appropriate approach. Indeed, such systems are highly distributed and heterogeneous, unreliable and redundant, so new approaches, distributed and stochastic in nature, need to be developed. Consequently, we need to move from a deterministic, computation-centered to a probabilistic, communication-based design paradigm to compensate for the lack of predictable behavior which used to be the norm in traditional systems. We need to consider optimization strategies that work in distributed collaborative networks and find new ways to model communication and traffic distributions in cars, buildings, or chips. Starting from these overarching ideas, this special session is meant to address the concept of probabilistic, communication-centric design in a variety of contexts and identify specific design principles and optimization techniques that are poised to redefine the landscape of system design in the near future. Java simulation applets solving equations for system models have been constructed for teaching system behavior in Pharmacology and Physiology. The applets are intended to be included in Web pages with text and other illustrations for use in the classroom or in self-study lessons. Students can experiment with the system by changing selected model parameters with sliders, immediately observing the resulting changes in system behavior. Several applet presentations are constructed for a model, each presentation designed for a different learning objective by displaying a subset of output variables and making a subset of parameters available for adjustment. Presentations may include control buttons, a graph for output display, sliders to adjust parameters, a legend table comparing parameter settings for multiple experiments, and an animation of the model linked to the calculations. The applet design is highly modular to facilitate replication with different models. Two architectures were tested and compared: 1) a single applet containing all the functions listed above embedded as a single unit in the Web page and 2) a cluster of individual applets of different functional types (control buttons, graph, sliders, etc.) distributed over the Web page and linked by a control object having no visible interface.

Many complex systems, such as multi-agent modeling and simulation which are crucial in military applications, necessitate concurrent task planning and decision making. These applications include battlefield modeling and simulation for soldier virtual training. In general these systems are implemented on automated systems with distributed architectures on heterogeneous operating systems and hardware platforms. In this paper we present an autonomous multi agent path planning system with agents-in-formation constraints in a distributed computing environment. Here a given agent, an entity with behaviors, exchanges sensory positioning feedback information over the network with other agents that are running on separate networked distributed computing nodes than the one the given agent is running on. Hence the agents do not have complete knowledge of the environment, but only a limited one. That is, in keeping with the agent formation constraint, the agents have knowledge only of the agents' information residing on the distributed memory of the computing node the agents are running on. The agents exchange agents' positioning sensory information of the rest of the agents they are interacting with, over a distributed network. Here agents autonomous trajectory planning is achieved for each agent to reach its destination via an unstructured distributed environment filled with dynamic obstacles and other agents. One focus is on the agents achieving their goals under real time formation constraints. We propose a multi-threaded architecture to achieve light-weight concurrency and multi-agent cooperative concurrency, as they allow separation between address space and thread control. Additionally, a threads-based architecture benefits from non-blocking system calls. Finally, experimental results are presented to show the potential of the proposed method for multi-agent distributed path planning.
