Reconfigurable devices like Configurable systems on a Chip (CSoCs) have the ability to exchange parts of hardware during runtime. Multimedia applications often require computing power and often can be accelerated by specific hardware circuits. In this contribution we present the effect of hardware acceleration in reconfigurable devices. We introduce a new model of adaptive processors and describe its basic principle of operation. The model allows runtime variations of the type and number of functional units (including application specific FUs) as well as variations of the communication structure. Then, we discuss our multimedia kernel Inverse Discrete Cosine Transformation (IDCT) and the ability of shifting different parts of the IDCT into hardware. simulation results show that hardware acceleration of multimedia operations in an adaptive processor leads to significant performance gains and therefore reduces energy consumption.

Several forms of processor memory organizations have been in use to optimally access off-chip memory systems mainly the hard disk drives (HDD). Recent trends show that the solid state drives (SSD) such as flash memories replacing HDDs and multi-processor memory system realized in a single 3-D structure with network-on-chip (NOC) architecture as a communication medium. This paper discusses high level memory organization and architectural modeling and simulation based on 3D NOC. A comparative analysis among several models including Dance-hall, Sandwich, Terminal, Per-layer and mixed architectures is done. simulations in cycle accurate 3-D NOC VHDL model are done to evaluate the performance each architecture in uniform and local traffic patterns.

Reconfigurable conveyors are increasingly being adopted in multiple industrial sectors for their immense flexibility in adapting to new products and product lines. Before modifying the layout of the conveyor system for the new product line, however, engineers and layout planners must be able to answer many questions about the system, such as maximum sustainable rate of flow of goods, prioritization among goods, and tolerances of failures. Any analysis capability that provides answers to these questions must account for both the physical and cyber artifacts of the reconfigurable system all at once. Moreover, the same system should enable the stakeholders to seamlessly change the layouts and be able to analyze the pros and cons of the layouts. This paper addresses these challenges by presenting a model-driven analysis tool that provides three important capabilities. First, a domain-specific modeling language provides the stakeholders with intuitive artifacts to model conveyor layouts. Second, an analysis engine embedded within the model-driven tool provides an accurate simulation of the modeled conveyor system accounting for both the physical and cyber issues. Third, generative capabilities within the tool help to automate the analysis process. The merits of our model-driven analysis tool are evaluated in the context of an example conveyor topology.

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been widely deployed in a variety of business sectors and industries, yielding numbers of revolutionary applications and services that are primarily driven by high-performance computation and storage facilities in the cloud. On the other hand, embedding intelligence into edge devices is highly demanded by emerging applications such as autonomous systems, human-machine interactions, and the Internet of Things (IoT). In these applications, it is advantageous to process data near or at the source of data to improve energy & spectrum efficiency and security, and decrease latency. Although the computation capability of edge devices has increased tremendously during the past decade, it is still challenging to perform sophisticated AI algorithms in these resource-constrained edge devices, which calls for not only low-power chips for energy efficient processing at the edge but also a system-level framework to distribute resources and tasks along the edge-cloud continuum. In this overview, we summarize dedicated edge hardware for machine learning from embedded applications to sub-mW “always-on” IoT nodes. Recent advances of circuits and systems incorporating joint design of architectures and algorithms will be reviewed. Fog computing paradigm that enables processing at the edge while still offering the possibility to interact with the cloud will be covered, with focus on opportunities and challenges of exploiting fog computing in AI as a bridge between the edge device and the cloud.

Multiple Outputs Programmable Integrated Circuits (MOPICs) trainer for educational applications is fabricated based on unsatisfactory usage of PIC simulation which is not able to achieve the learning outcome especially in enhancing leaner's hands-on skill through circuit designing, connection and trouble shooting. Current PIC programming is done through computer simulation, cause the leaners facing difficulty in understanding the wiring connection between the input component, PIC microcontroller and output components. The fabrication of MOPICs trainer was designed and improved by adding more output components, cost effective and user friendly. Moreover, MOPICs trainer are embedded with input component such as normally open push buttons, and 5 difference output components such as seven-segment display, servomotor, LEDs, LCD display, and 12VDC motor. Newly fabricated MOPIC trainer can be programme and re-programme for numerous tasks. Based on respondent questionnaire, it is show that on average of 92.59% agreed that newly developed MOPICs trainer is user friendly, safe and attractive to be used while 94.64% respondent agreed that there are enhancements in theoretical knowledge aspect and hands-on skill implementation in their learning process.

Scientific applications like weather forecasting require high performance and fast response time. But this ideal requirement has always been constrained by peculiarities of underlying platforms specially distributed platforms. One such constraint is the efficiency of communication between geographically dispersed and physically distributed processes running these applications, that is the efficiency of inter process communication (IPC) mechanisms. This paper provides hard evidence that an operating system kernel-level implementation of IPC on multi-computers reduces the execution time of a weather forecasting model by nearly half on average compared to when the IPC mechanism is implemented at library level. A well known non-hydrostatic version of the Penn state/NCAR mesoscale model, called MM5, is executed on a networked cluster. The performance of MM5 is measured with two distributed implementations of IPC, a kernel-level implementation called DIPC2006 and a renowned library level implementation called MPI. It is both shown how and argued why the performance of MM5 on a DIPC2006 configured cluster is by far better than its performance on an MPI configured similar cluster. Even ignoring the favorable points of kernel-level implementations, like safety, privilege, reliability, and primitiveness, the insight is twofold. Scientist may look for more efficient distributed implementations of IPC to run their simulations faster, and computer engineers may try harder to develop more efficient distributed implementations of IPC for scientists.

Presents a technique to accurately estimate the state of a robot helicopter using a combination of gyroscopes, accelerometers, inclinometers and GPS. simulation results of state estimation of the helicopter are presented using Kalman filtering based on sensor modeling. The number of estimated states of helicopter is nine : three attitudes(/spl theta/,/spl phi/,/spl psi/) from the gyroscopes, three accelerations(x/spl ***/,y/spl ***/,z/spl ***/) and three positions (x, y, z) from the accelerometers. Two Kalman filters were used, one for the gyroscope data and the other for the accelerometer data. Our approach is unique because it explicitly avoids dynamic modeling of the system and allows for can elegant combination of sensor data available at different frequencies. We also describe the larger context in which this work is embedded, namely the design and implementation of an autonomous robot helicopter.

In recent years, fractal encoding of images (using iterated function systems) has emerged as a potent technique in image compression. This method has comparable or sometimes better performance as compared to most others, especially, with respect to quality of reconstructed image and compression ratio. But most fractal encoding methods are very slow and this prevents them from realtime processing of images. Since fractal encoding methods have ample data parallelism and spatial/temporal recurrence, there is a lot of scope for designing efficient VLSI architectures for them. In this paper we have selected a suitable encoding scheme and designed the VLSI architecture for it. The proposed architecture has been simulated and synthesized, using Verilog and Synergy from Cadence Design Tools. The architecture employs principles of pipelining and parallelism to enhance performance with respect to speed of compression. simulation and synthesis results show good time performance for the proposed chip.

We describe a model-based height controller for a hopping robot with a pneumatically powered leg. The controller explicitly models variation in the leg angle and height. Using an explicit model of the physics of the pneumatic spring and some symmetry assumptions, we derive the desired leg-length setting to regulate apex hopping height using a PD controller. simulation experiments of hopping in the sagittal plane show reasonable height regulation. For low-speed running, we take advantage of the small variations in the leg angle about the vertical, and demonstrate that the original symmetry assumptions may be relaxed by restricting the leg angle to /spl pi//2. simulations show that the restricted model outperforms the original model by a small but significant amount.

RUAV (Rotorcraft based Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) have been exploited in various fields such as surveillance, reconnaissance and search. Most of the study in this area is focused on single RUAV; however using multiple unmanned vehicles is big advantage to accomplish the mission in a short time and effective way. Moreover little amount of research has been undertaken in the development of multiple RUAV control systems. This paper proposes a behavior-based decentralized approach that allows an RUAV to carry out its own mission of flying to a specified region while the distances between RUAVs are maintained constantly to avoid collision. The main goal of the proposed controller is to make the RUAV cooperate among each other to achieve the defined task. In this research Reynold's flocking model based behavior approach has been utilized. Along with this the testing environment for multiple RUAV is developed to validate proposed control algorithm. Complete setup is implemented and run under QNX RTOS, based on PC104 embedded board. The multiple RUAV is tested and evaluated using HILS (Hardware-In-the-Loop simulation). To validate the proposed approach, simulation is performed to achieve the waypoint with multiple RUAVs.
