The performance of the Astronautics ZS-1, a decoupled access/execute (DAE) processor, is examined. The CPU is composed of two subsystems: an access processor, which handles address generation and fixed-point operations; and an execute processor, which handles floating-point operations. These two systems communicate through a network of queues and operate in a fairly decoupled manner. This architecture exhibits a form of fine-grain parallelism, called slip, that improves performance. Some performance bounds for the ZS-1 are developed. A simple count of resource usage is sufficient to establish a good upper bound on performance for most vector loops. A dependence graph is used to form another bound that is particularly useful for nonvector loops. This two-bound model accounts for compiler characteristics, such as loop unrolling, and for hardware characteristics, such as memory latency. This model is applied to the first 12 Livermore loops and compared to simulation results for a variety of memory systems. This comparison indicates how well the ZS-1 tolerates increased memory latency as a function of slip and provides insights regarding application codes, architectures, and compiler capabilities.< >

Capability-based acquisition changes the general approach to systems engineering. Instead of buying threat-based, service-specific systems, a mobile target-weapon pairing system, for example, and then identifying how to integrate that system with other similar threat-based systems, we now identify the warfighting capabilities we want to achieve. Then we start with a 'blank sheet of paper' to develop the systems architecture and technical standards necessary to allow seamless interaction using shared data and applications. [1] Capability-based acquisition focuses on the development of alternative system of systems (SoS) architectures that link (i.e., network) diverse interoperable systems to optimize overarching capability effectiveness while minimizing development *** is up to the systems architect and engineer to find the best solution by examining inter-relationships between various configurations of warfighters, platforms, sensors, weapons, command and control, communications, while considering external factors that potentially impact full capability effectiveness and sustainment, such as operational doctrine, joint operations, government and societal organizations, terrorism, and public opinion. The convergence of applications (Internet and embedded applications) and technology (reuse and very high integration level) trends resulted in a strong need for design of soft real-time DSP systems-on-silicon. We developed a new hierarchical modular approach for synthesis of area efficient soft real-time DSP systems-on-silicon. This synthesis strategy employs a number of optimization intensive scheduling, performance monitoring, and allocation steps. The backbone of the optimization approach is a novel online scheduling algorithm which uses meta-algorithmic techniques for on-the-fly heuristic selection and parameter tuning. Resource allocation refers to a predetermined lower-bound system performance, to perform a branch-and-bound resource allocation search for an area-efficient multiprocessor configuration where each processor has local instruction and data cache. In order to bridge the gap between the profiling, modeling, and synthesis tools of the two traditionally independent synthesis domains (architecture and CAD), we develop a new synthesis and evaluation platform which integrates the existing modeling, profiling, and simulation tools with the new developed system-level synthesis tools. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated on the industrial strength MediaBench benchmark suite.

Agent-based modeling is commonly used for studying complex system properties emergent from interactions among many agents. We present a novel data-driven agent-based modeling framework applied to forecasting individual and aggregate residential rooftop solar adoption in San Diego county. Our first step is to learn a model of individual agent behavior from combined data of individual adoption characteristics and property assessment. We then construct an agent-based simulation with the learned model embedded in artificial agents, and proceed to validate it using a holdout sequence of collective adoption decisions. We demonstrate that the resulting agent-based model successfully forecasts solar adoption trends and provides a meaningful quantification of uncertainty about its predictions. We utilize our model to optimize two classes of policies aimed at spurring solar adoption: one that subsidizes the cost of adoption, and another that gives away free systems to low-income house-holds. We find that the optimal policies derived for the latter class are significantly more efficacious, whereas the policies similar to the current California Solar Initiative incentive scheme appear to have a limited impact on overall adoption trends.

With the evolution of computing technologies, both PCs and workstations have increased computing power with less cost in the recent years. This paper presents a model and design of a fully distributed virtual reality system, called Multiple User Distributed simulation (MUDS) system, over a network of low-end computers. MUDS system is designed to provide a virtual environment for both a single user and multiple participants over a fully distributed environment. However, only the method and architecture of building a single user distributed virtual environment is presented in this paper. MUDS system adapts and modifies the concepts from High Level Architecture, which is designed by DoD of US to provide interoperability among distributed simulators. Compared to the other existing distributed systems, MUDS system provides a transparent interface among distributed tasks. The prototype of MUDS system has been successfully built in Institute of computer Science and Information Engineering, Tamkang University. An experiment of using MUDS system along with the experimental result will also be fully discussed in the paper.

Many-core systems are envisioned to fulfill the increased performance demands in several computing domains such as embedded and high performance computing (HPC). The HPC systems are often overloaded to execute a number of dynamically arriving jobs. In overload situations, market-inspired resource allocation heuristics have been found to provide better results in terms of overall profit (value) earned by completing the execution of a number of jobs when compared to various other heuristics. However, the conventional market-inspired heuristics lack the concept of holding low value executing jobs to free the occupied resources to be used by high value arrived jobs in order to maximize the overall profit. In this paper, we propose a market-inspired heuristic that accomplish the aforementioned concept and utilizes design-time profiling results of jobs to facilitate efficient allocation. Additionally, the remaining executions of the held jobs are performed on freed resources at later stages to make some profit out of them. The holding process identifies the appropriate jobs to be put on hold to free the resources and ensures that the loss incurred due to holding is lower than the profit achieved by high value arrived jobs by using the free resources. Experiments show that the proposed approach achieves 8% higher savings when compared to existing approaches, which can be a significant amount when dealing in the order of millions of dollars.

The simulation and analysis of complex spatiotemporal systems are crucial for expressing and solving chaotic dynamical systems such as those in Earth and environmental sciences. Understanding and computing physical processes, re-actions, or substance transport typically relies on control equations. This paper aims to explore a novel research paradigm by enhancing the physical network coupling structure to construct predictive models for fluid dynamics systems, simulating spatiotemporal dynamical processes of substance transformation in the domain of environmental physics. In particular, when addressing problems involving the non-homogeneous 2D fluid dynamics equations, the characteristic parameters of the phys-ical processes were redefined. This was achieved by encoding hard boundary conditions and designing appropriate neural network architectures to mitigate over-fitting issues during the prediction of parameterized dynamical systems. Comparative experiments involving five benchmark physics-informed neural network methods emphasize the significant improvement in capturing time-varying features and prediction accuracy brought by the proposed approach. Through various water cycle scenarios, the model's estimation ability for diffusion fields is validated, focusing on analyzing the influence of data errors and sample size on the computational results of this deep neural network. Notably, the proposed method exhibits higher robustness to outlier observations under extreme conditions.

Miniature manipulators have a special role in applications that limited spaces exist. Some attractive applications are active catheters suitable tools in minimally invasive surgery and gripping and manipulating in small spaces. On the other hand, modular robotic systems are fast growing solutions for cases where the manipulator should be extended for different applications. The features of the applied module direct affect the overall property and performance of the developed system. The major application of SMA actuators is developing miniature systems. In this paper, first of all, a basic concept for developing a flexible module is introduced. In the presented work, by attaching the wire on a flexible beam, the small strain of the SMA actuator resulted in a larger deformation in the module. The module incorporates several Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuators to create relative deflection between two parallel plates connected to each other through a flexible beam. SMA actuators are embedded around the flexible beam to produce deflection in different directions after actuation. By connecting various modules in a serial manner, a manipulator could be developed. In the design process of manipulator, a mechatronics approach is considered. Through the design process, the dynamic modeling of the system is simulated in Simulink of Matlab. In this way, previously verified model of Brinson is used for SMAs model. The provided platform of simulation assists in optimizing the dimensions of the designed module. Finally, the specification of a module working properly is suggested for applying as a manipulator.

Public sensing is an application in which sensory systems embedded in smart devices, vehicles, residential and public spaces form a collective cloud of data sources from which multi-owned access points realize end-users' service requests. This conception can be further extended under the umbrella of integrated RFID-Sensor Networks (RSNs) to include RFID systems. Such a configuration is heterogeneous by nature and faces many challenges in terms of data delivery and resource management. In this paper, we represent a Reciprocal Public Sensing (RPS) scheme for integrated RSN architectures. Our scheme incorporates heuristic solutions for static sensors and mobile data collectors, in addition to a reciprocal agreement for data exchange over the tiers of the proposed architecture adhering to the social welfare of the network as a whole. We provide simulation results showing how RPS outperforms other data delivery schemes in terms of minimizing delay, packet loss, and energy consumption, in addition to prolonging the overall network lifetime.
