One of the major design challenges of Network-on-Chip interconnect is the storage buffers. They occupy a significant portion of the system's area and so they are considered as main "power-hungry" components. Deciding the appropriate buffers size and implementation in these systems is the key technique for increasing system performance and also for reducing overall area and power consumption. However, this goal is very hard to achieve with traditional design approaches, where design decisions of the main architectural parameters are generally made with slow and inaccurate software simulation or theoretical modeling. In order to quickly capture and decide the optimal buffers size and the whole system behavior, we propose in this work an efficient design method for Network-on-Chip architecture based on a novel run-time monitoring mechanism (RMM). The system monitors the traffic flow at different system's resources and sends the monitored run-time traffic information to a specialized controller. In addition, our proposed design method allows to easily compute optimal architecture hardware parameters (i.e Buffer size) and allocate the appropriate values on demand to satisfy the requirements of any given application. The RMM mechanism was designed in hardware and integrated into our NoC system (PNoC). From the evaluation results, we conclude that the system performance in terms of execution time was about 27% better when compared with traditional design methods over several benchmark programs.

It is sometimes useful to provide intelligent agents with some degree of stochastic behavior, particularly when used in games and simulators. The less-predictable behavior that results from the randomness can make the agents seem more believable, and would encourage the players or users to address the genuine problems presented by a game or simulator rather than simply learning to exploit the embedded agents' predictability. However, such randomized behavior should not harm performance in the agents' designated tasks. This paper introduces a method, called stochastic sharpening, for training artificial neural networks as stochastic controllers for agents in discrete-state environments. Stochastic sharpening reinforces the representation of confidence values in the outputs of networks with localist encodings, and thus produces networks that recommend alternative actions on the basis of their expected utility. Such networks can be used to introduce stochastic behavior with minimal disruption of task performance, resulting in agents that are more believable and less subject to exploitation based on predictability.

As daylight modeling and simulation abilities have progressed, a number of new annual daylighting metrics have been proposed to characterize the quality of daylight in a space. A critique of many of these metrics, however, involves how they model human and sensor controlled window shades and blinds. In particular, the majority of metrics model manual shade control in an ideal, unrealistic, manner- i.e., closed precisely when necessary. This paper explores a more realistic and granular algorithm that has recently been implemented within Sensor Placement Optimization Tool (SPOT Pro™) software. This algorithm allows for adjustments in sensitivity as well as delay when simulating manual shade control, thereby allowing modeling for a wider range of representative occupant behaviors. Preliminary analysis using the new, more elastic algorithm suggests that occupant delays in opening of shade controls can result in significant (50-100%) reductions in daylight availability. The contribution of the research is an initial exploration of the new algorithm to support more accurate modeling of shade control in the future.

As the complexity of speech recognition systems increases, conventional computers are unable to perform all the operations quickly enough to process the speech input in real time. This paper examines the use of a single instruction stream - multiple data stream (SIMD) parallel architecture to reduce the computation time for a dynamic time warping template matching based isolated word recognition system. Each of the components of the recognition system was written as an SMD parallel algorithm. The component SIMD algorithms and the complete word recognition system were simulated. The simulations showed that with 100 processing elements, each an 8 MHz MC68000, the speech system can perform isolated word recognition over a large vocabulary in real time. This real-time speech system used a 20 KHz sampling rate, 16 bits per sample, 100 samples per frame, 8 LPC coefficients per frame, 16 bits per LPC coefficient, and a 1,000 word vocabulary.

The Internet of Things is making significant changes to the world we live in from the way we drive to how we make purchases. The Internet of Things platform is responsible for collecting diverse information from sophisticated sensors and providing a common language for devices and apps to communicate with each other. A typical IoT network consists of various embedded sensors, processors and communication hardware. To know how a designed network would perform in real-time, the need for a simulation tool arises as buying the resources necessary for experimental purposes becomes very expensive. ns-3 is one such tool used for simulating real-world networks by writing scripts in C++ and Python on a single computer. ns-3 helps to create various virtual nodes and with the help of the various Helper classes it provides, we can install the necessary devices, internet stacks, application, etc. to our nodes. This paper aims to design and construct an IoT-based network, simulate it using ns-3 and understand how the simulation results obtained can be put to use.

This paper describes original research efforts in the design, simulation, and development of nanotechnology-based molecular test equipment (MTE). This is a research effort for testing printed circuit boards independent of traditional automatic test equipment (ATE) through the fabrication of MTE within integrated circuits (ICs). The MTE is embedded within the IC substrate and encapsulated within nanoprobes that connect between the surface and the substrate of the IC at various functional areas. A process is followed whereby IC device simulation is performed to assess the electrical, chemical, and structural properties of integrated and adjacent substrate devices. Through this approach the nominal and failed device performance parameters of interest to substrate-based MTE are found. Discussion of the development and application of MTE within IC architectures is provided, including such topics as the effect of substrate composition on the design and realization of MTE, interfaces between MTE and IC devices, and reporting of MTE results to the IC surface and technician. Potential application areas within different device functions will also be identified. A chemical structure diagram is also provided to illustrate the implementation of MTE using discrete device configurations with MTE-augmented logic.

The architectures which support modern supercomputing machinery are as diverse today, as at any point during the last twenty years. The variety of processor core arrangements, threading strategies and the arrival of heterogeneous computation nodes are driving modern-day solutions to petaflop speeds. The increasing complexity of such systems, as well as codes written to take advantage of the new computational abilities, pose significant frustrations for existing techniques which aim to model and analyze the performance of such hardware and software. In this paper we demonstrate the use of post-execution analysis on trace-based profiles to support the construction of simulation-based models. This involves combining the runtime capture of call-graph information with computational timings, which in turn allows representative models of code behavior to be extracted. The main advantage of this technique is that it largely automates performance model development, a burden associated with existing techniques. We demonstrate the capabilities of our approach using both the NAS Parallel Benchmark suite and a real-world supercomputing benchmark developed by the United Kingdom Atomic Weapons Establishment. The resulting models, developed in less than two hours per code, have a good degree of predictive accuracy. We also show how one of these models can be used to explore the performance of the code on over 16,000 cores, demonstrating the scalability of our solution.

The real-time resource allocation problem has been an active research topic in recent decades. Although the real-time resource allocation problem has been analyzed for different architectural assumptions, various simplified assumptions on resource synchronization are made for real-time process scheduling. Little work has been done in scheduling processes which may requests services from other independent subsystems. This paper explores real-time scheduling of processes which may share non-preemptible resources on the same processor and, at the same time, request services from other independent subsystems. In particular we consider the scheduling of real-time processes which may stop to wait for disk I/O without releasing any locked semaphores. We propose to revise the definition of priority ceiling and propose a resource synchronization mechanism to meet the deadline requirements of real-time CPU-bound and I/O-bound processes. The capability of the proposed methodology is verified by a series of simulation experiments on different workloads of CPU-bound and I/O-bound processes, for which we have some encouraging experimental results.

Deep Neural Networks have enabled remarkable progress in the field of single image super resolution (SR). However, these models are often large and complex to be applied for real-world applications with limited resources as in mobile and embedded systems. We investigate whether the typical low latency models as MobileNet can be expected of comparable efficiency at SR tasks with recently reported SR performance in the literature. To this end, a moderate and effective architecture, Bottleneck-In-Bottleneck (BIB), is introduced in this paper. The BIB uses multiple expansion factors of the residual blocks in the form of a bottleneck, reducing computation complexity while utilizing advantageous factors of large feature dimensions. We also propose BIBNet with multiple BIB blocks, which can easily adjust its size and computational cost to create a variety of efficient and high-performance models. Extensive experiments show that, with fewer parameters and computations, BIBNet achieves highly competitive performance compared to other conventional SR methods with more complex architectures.

The purpose of this study was to describe the 3-D nano-scaled surface texture of the Nickel–Carbon(Ni–C) nanocomposite thin films composed of Ni nanoparticles with different average sizes embedded in amorphous hydrogenated carbon using stereometric analysis. The 3-D nanoscaled surface texture was studied by atomic force microscopy(AFM) and stereometric analysis. In a wider context, we also discuss our findings with regard to manufacture of the Nickel-Carbon composite thin films with desired surface characteristics.
