With the demand for food projected to rise between 59 and 98% to sustain a population of 9.7 billion people by the year 2050, the global challenge of ensuring food security is becoming increasingly prominent. The decline in rural farmers and the unsustainable methods of traditional farming practices have spurred the emergence of urban farming. Among urban farming techniques, aquaponics systems poise technological integration. The effectiveness of aquaponics relies on a dependable cyber-physical system with Internet of Things (IoT) technology. However, integrating IoT devices results in elevated power consumption and increased production costs for fish and vegetables due to the constant need for power and uninterrupted connectivity. To address this concern, exploring green IoT strategies and techniques to minimize energy consumption and carbon emissions is imperative. Therefore, we employed an innovative modeling and simulation approach to investigate the potential of optimizing sensor placement and sampling rates' impact on energy consumption within an IoT architecture deployed in a commercial-sized multi-loop aquaponics system at Metro Farm (Downtown East, Singapore). The IoT architectures were modeled and simulated using the VisualSim software package. The achieved energy savings were quantified in Watt-hours and extrapolated to assess the overall energy conservation and cost savings for the entire urban farm.

Synthesizing aliasing-free space compactor for built-in self-testing of very large scale integration circuits and systems is of great importance, especially because of the design paradigm shift in recent years from system-on-board to system-on-chip. This paper investigates and provides additional results on a recently developed approach to designing aliasing-free space compaction hardware targeting particularly embedded cores-based system-on-chips for single stuck-line faults, extending well-known concept from conventional switching theory, viz. that of compatibility relation as used in the minimization of incomplete sequential machines. For a pair of response outputs of the circuit under test, the method introduces the notion of fault detection compatibility and conditional fault detection compatibility (conditional upon some other response output pair being simultaneously fault detection compatible) with respect to two-input XOR/XNOR logic. The process is illustrated with design details of space compactors for the international Symposium on Circuits and systems (ISCAS 85) combinational (and ISCAS 89 full-scan sequential) benchmark circuits using simulation programs ATALANTA and FSIM, attesting to the importance of the technique from the viewpoint of simplicity, resultant low area overhead and full fault coverage for single stuck-line faults, thereby making it an appropriate choice in commercial design environments.

As urban traffic pressure continues to increase, existing traffic systems have achieved some success in improving vehicle throughput. However, they commonly face issues such as insufficient precision in visual recognition models, traffic signal control algorithms that neglect pedestrian needs, and excessive reliance on hardware infrastructure, leading to high deployment complexity. To address these challenges, an intelligent traffic system based on an improved YOLOv8 model and Deep Q-Network (DQN) algorithm is proposed. The system consists of a road dataization module and a traffic signal control module. In the road dataization module, the improved YOLOv8 model incorporates an attention mechanism to efficiently recognize vehicle information and uses OpenCV to process traffic images, enabling accurate data modeling. In the traffic signal control module, the enhanced DQN algorithm dynamically adjusts signal durations to balance the needs of pedestrians and vehicles, thereby improving traffic efficiency. Verified through the SUMO simulation platform, this approach demonstrates significant ad-vantages in optimizing traffic flow and throughput. Furthermore, by leveraging algorithmic data analysis of the environment, the system reduces dependency on hardware infrastructure, significantly lowering deployment complexity and showing strong potential for practical application. Additionally, the design of a visualized front-end interface and an embedded display system enhances the system's usability and integrity, validating its feasibility.

An inherent property of medical ultrasound imaging is the speckle noise that generally obscures the image and reduces the diagnostic image resolution and contrast. Consequently, substantial improvement of ultrasound images is an important prerequisite for ultrasound imaging. Some recent research has suggested that the spatial distribution of tissue densities may be used in ultrasound imaging to reconstruct images with fewer speckles. This new approach is based on the direct estimation of tissue density from the radio frequency echo signals received by ultrasound probe. This paper presents a mathematical analysis of this approach and derives a simplified model for issue estimation. This model simplifies the computation involved in density estimation and provides deeper insight into the problem. It shows that image reconstruction by tissue density estimation may have limited effect on speckle noise embedded in the RF echo signal. The analysis results are verified by numerical calculations and simulation examples.

Marine phenomena such as algal blooms can be detected using in situ measurements onboard autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), but understanding plankton ecology and community structure requires retrieval and analysis of water specimens. This process requires shipboard or manual sample collection, followed by onshore lab analysis which is time-consuming. Better understanding of the relationship between the observable environmental features and organism abundance would allow more precisely targeted sampling and thereby save time. In this work, we present an approach to learn and improve models that predict this relationship. Coupled with recent advances in AUV technology allowing selective retrieval of water samples, this constitutes a new paradigm in biological sampling. We use organism abundance models along with spatial models of environmental features learned immediately after AUV deployments to compute spatial distributions of organisms in the coastal ocean purely from in situ AUV data. We use Gaussian process regression along with the unscented transform to fuse the two models, obtaining both the mean and variance of the organism abundance estimates. The uncertainty in organism abundance predictions is used in a sampling strategy to selectively acquire new water specimens that improves the organism abundance models. simulation results are presented demonstrating the advantage of performing hierarchical probabilistic regression. After the validation through simulation, we show predictions of organism abundance from models learned on lab-analyzed water sample data, and AUV survey data.

Humans outperform computers on many natural tasks including vision. Given the human ability to recognize objects rapidly and almost effortlessly, it is pragmatically sensible to study and attempt to imitate algorithms used by the brain. Analysis of the anatomical structure and physiological operation of brain circuits has led to derivation of novel algorithms that in initial study have successfully addressed issues of known difficulty in visual processing. These algorithms are slow on uni-processor based systems, thwarting attempts to drive real-time robots for behavioral study, but as might be expected of algorithms designed for highly parallel brain architectures, they are intrinsically parallel and lend themselves to efficient implementation across multiple processors. This paper presents an implementation of such parallel algorithms on a CELL processor and further extends it to a low-cost cluster built using the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3). The paper describes the modeled brain circuitry, derived algorithms, implementation on the PS3, and initial performance evaluation with respect to both speed and visual object recognition efficacy. The results show that a parallel implementation can achieve a 140x performance improvement on a cluster of 3 PS3s, attaining real-time processing delays. More importantly, we show that the improvements scale linearly, or nearly so in practice. These initial findings, while highly promising in their own right, also provide a new platform to enable extended investigation of large scale brain circuit models. Early prototyping of such large scale models has yielded evidence of their efficacy in recognition of time-varying, partially occluded, scale-invariant objects in arbitrary scenes.

ICT and digital Technologies have influenced the everyday life and the way how people learn and work. Nowadays, there is a variety of learning systems supporting innovative digital approaches and many schools, universities and organizations worldwide are investing in building their own e-Learning platforms. However, learners” performance still a concern that requests focus for improvement. The learning processes can be adapted to suit the needs of particular users when the proposed e-learning systems include context-awareness computing. We believe that instead of designing an e-Learning environment with hidden contextual information, e.g.: user's activity, location or nearby devices, we must consider a new e-Learning application approach including context-awareness capabilities. Such a system will be more efficient and adaptive to users' needs. Existing e-Learning systems suffer a lack of dynamic scalability. It's also complexes to extend, and expensive to integrate with other e-Learning platforms. In particular students who have visual processing disorder or hearing impairments can manipulate digital text or use adaptive modules like Subtitles which help them in processing the information effectively. This paper focus on the development of a hybrid e-Learning cloud system that combines the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) architecture and various contexts aware computing such as User context, system context, and environment context that can quickly adjust to any environment change is expected. Were viewed traditional e-Learning architectures and their limitations and then proposed a hybrid cloud computing architecture to offer resources efficiently to all learning stakeholders and improve the education system quality at an affordable cost. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed system, we implemented and evaluated a simulation scenario. High PV systems integration faces distribution networks (DN) with technical issues. However, PVs are inverter- based sources and with active power curtailment (APC) and reactive power control (RPC) can provide ancillary services for distribution system operators (DSOs) and participate as problem/solution principle. This paper proposes an optimal power flow (OPF)-based model for improving voltages and reducing losses by using PV inverter APC and RPC strategies. The proposed optimization model is presented as nonlinear programming (NLP). For solving this optimization problem without approximations, a co-simulation of OpenDSS power system analysis software and PyGMO package with embedded computational intelligence (CI) optimization methods is used. Several case studies are carried out over the IEEE European low-voltage test feeder (LVTF). Regardless of which strategy is applied, the obtained results show that the proposed model improves technical conditions in PV-rich DN and illustrate PV potential in providing ancillary services to DSO.

The approach of the paper regards analysis of a light electric vehicle used for urban mobility via real-time simulation with experimental validation. Using a dedicated software, National Instruments VeriStand, the authors prove the possibility of performing vehicle testing for a period of actual mobility time recorded inside the urban scenario. Such long-time simulations are extremely time consuming or impossible to perform using computer-based simulators. One solution is to decrease the model complexity in order to perform these simulations, however the computation time still reaches periods beyond the actual analyzed one. Using VeriStand, the model complexity is kept at its maximum, hence the accuracy and the performances are not diminished. The required computation time is the actual mobility time. Hence, the same time can be applied for an actual test-bench, proving via comparative analysis the quality of the results and the accuracy of the model under test. The considered application is an electric scooter, equipped with a 300W permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM), supplied via an inverter from a source of 36 VDC. The model of the PMSM is a flux-linkage one designed in Matlab Simulink and exported into VeriStand running on a NI-PXIe 8135 embedded Controller. The entire study is validated with experimental measurements performed with the actual machine under study.
