NanoStreams explores the design, implementation, and system software stack of micro-servers aimed at processing data in-situ and in real time. These micro-servers can serve the emerging Edge computing ecosystem, namely the provisioning of advanced computational, storage, and networking capability near data sources to achieve both low latency event processing and high throughput analytical processing, before considering off-loading some of this processing to high-capacity data centres. Nano Streams explores a scale-out micro-server architecture that can achieve equivalent QoS to that of conventional rack-mounted servers for high-capacity data centres, but with dramatically reduced form factors and power consumption. To this end, Nano Streams introduces novel solutions in programmable & configurable hardware accelerators, as well as the system software stack used to access, share, and program those accelerators. Our Nano Streams micro-server prototype has demonstrated 5.5 x higher energy-efficiency than a standard Xeon Server. simulations of the micro server's memory system extended to leverage hybrid DDR/NVM main memory indicated 5x higher energy-efficiency than a conventional DDR-based system.

With the rise of software system complexity, developers rely more on a modular approach to system design to reduce development cost. However, as a result, integrating a real-Time system becomes a challenge. To be able to properly integrate the system, software developers arc required to provide software characteristics such as the execution times of their components to ensure the correct timing behaviour of the overall system. Generally, engineers rely on profilers available on their workstations to collect execution times of software. Yet, the final target architecture is usually vastly different from that of the workstation. Furthermore, the fact that the target platform is mostly inaccessible at design time calls for tools that can estimate the execution time of components on a wide range of architectures with reasonable cost. In this paper, we propose a methodology that relies on (1) fast simulation techniques and (2) analytical tools that build predictive models to estimate the execution times of components on a target architecture with minimum detail. We show that the approach is able to predict the execution times of a set of benchmarks when migrated from a reference architecture to a target platform with comparable accuracy to simulation, while being 2 orders of magnitude faster. © 2016 Society for modeling & simulation international (SCS).

There are a number of mature ways to train various kinds of ANNs (artificial neural networks), including the BP (back propagation) based algorithm and so on. These training procedures are usually carried out on some GPU-enabled machine(s); 16-/32-bit-width floating point numbers are used as the NN parameters, without any limitation on the maximum fan-in/fan-out of a single neuron or on the type of activation functions. In contrast, for neuromorphic chips [1][2][3], quite a few hardware-specific constraints (the limited fan-in/fan-out of a single neuron, the limited range of synaptic weights, and the hardware types of neurons or activation functions are usually simpler than the software counterparts) do exist, which makes programming such chips difficult.

Control-flow dependence has always been posited as a substantial dilemma against program acceleration. With the availability of instruction-level parallel architectures, ifconversion optimization has become pivotal for extracting parallelism from serial programs. While many if-conversion optimization heuristics have been proposed in the literature, few of them investigated the proximity to optimality paying more concern to the input program subjectively. In this paper, we study the effectiveness of the LLVM if-conversion transformation using a broad range optimality analysis technique. The whole optimization space of branch instructions within an arbitrarily selected hotspot function of a program is analyzed, tackling the best-performing combination sequence of converted or non-converted branches. In order to precisely observe the influence of selectively converted branches we magnify individual function call and study the behavior with different call circumstances and input data detecting the impact of data size and distribution. We implemented our technique on LLVM 3.6.1 compilation infrastructure and experimented on several representative kernels of the SPEC-CPU2006 vl.l benchmarks suite running on a multicore system of Intel(R) Xeon(R) 3.50GHz processors. Our findings show a performance gain up to 22.7% at the best optimization over the standard optimized code, indicating the need for more aggressive compilation optimization that is able to capture the individual characteristics of every branch. © 2016 Society for modeling & simulation international (SCS).

Improvements in scientific instrumentation allow imaging at mesoscopic to atomic length scales, many spectroscopic modes, and now-with the rise of multimodal acquisition systems and the associated processing capability-the era of multidimensional, informationally dense data sets has arrived. Technical issues in these combinatorial scientific fields are exacerbated by computational challenges best summarized as a necessity for drastic improvement in the capability to transfer, store, and analyze large volumes of data. The Bellerophon Environment for Analysis of Materials (BEAM) platform provides material scientists the capability to directly leverage the integrated computational and analytical power of High Performance Computing (HPC) to perform scalable data analysis and simulation via an intuitive, cross-platform client user interface. This framework delivers authenticated, "push-button" execution of complex user workflows that deploy data analysis algorithms and computational simulations utilizing the converged compute-and-data infrastructure at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) Compute and Data Environment for Science (CADES) and HPC environments like Titan at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF). In this work we address the underlying HPC needs for characterization in the material science community, elaborate how BEAM's design and infrastructure tackle those needs, and present a small sub-set of user cases where scientists utilized BEAM across a broad range of analytical techniques and analysis modes.

As systems continue to evolve they rely less on human decision-making and more on computational intelligence. This trend in conjunction to the available technologies for providing advanced sensing, measurement, process control, and communication leads us towards the new field of Cyber-Physical System (CPS). Although these systems exhibit remarkable characteristics, the increased complexity imposed by numerous components and services makes their design extremely difficult. This paper proposes a software-supported framework for reducing the design complexity regarding the modeling, as well as the simulation of CPS. For this purpose, a novel technique based on system scenarios is applied. Evaluation results prove the effectiveness of introduced framework, as we achieve to reduce mentionable the modeling and simulation complexity with a controllable overhead in accuracy.
