This work is about an approach for designing control software for mechatronic and robotic machines. As all system parts (control algorithms, software infrastructure, I/O, and machine) influence each other, its total behaviour needs to be taken into account. Therefore, we use appropriate modelling formalisms, namely discrete event / discrete time for the control software and algorithm part, and differential equations for the machine / robotics part. We combine these two types of models in a co-modelling approach, supporting co-operative design of such cyber-physical systems. In this paper, the co-modelling and co-design approach is elaborated. It consists of four major steps, whereby the models in each are verified via simulation or co-simulation. It is a pure model-driven design approach, implying that all final code is generated from these verified models. This allows for better quality of the resulting embedded software. The method is illustrated using a case study. Structuring models and verification by simulation, whereby relevant simulations are set up such that they can be repeated as real experiments, is beneficial for the design work itself, i.e. making it far more effective and less error-prone.

computer vision (CV) is widely expected to be the next big thing in mobile computing. The availability of a camera and a large number of sensors in mobile devices will enable CV applications that understand the environment and enhance people's lives through augmented reality. One of the problems yet to solve is how to transfer demanding state-of-the-art CV algorithms designed to run on powerful desktop computers with several GPUs- onto energy-efficient, but slow, processors and GPUs found in mobile devices. To accommodate to the lack of performance, current CV applications for mobile devices are simpler versions of more complex algorithms, which generally run slowly and unreliably and provide a poor user experience. In this paper, we investigate ways to speed up demanding CV applications to run faster on mobile devices. We selected KinectFusion (KF) as a representative CV application. The KF application constructs a 3D model from the images captured by a Kinect. After porting it to an ARM platform, we applied several optimisation and parallelisation techniques using OpenCL to exploit all the available computing resources. We evaluated the impact on performance and power and demonstrate a 4 x speedup with just a 1.38x power increase. We also evaluated the performance portability of our optimisations by running on a different platform, and assessed similar improvements despite the different multi-core configuration and memory system. By measuring processor temperature, we found overheating to be the main limiting factor for running such high-performance codes on a mobile device not designed for full continuous utilisation.

Assessing photograph aesthetic quality is an interesting and important problem of computer vision. The understanding of how to classify photographs based on their aesthetic value not only provides us with important knowledge about effective methods and techniques of summarizing information embedded in digital images, but also has numerous practical applications in photo management systems, image search engines, photo library optimization processes, and smart cameras. Previous work has explored the method of using generic local descriptors extracted from gray-scale photographs to assess the aesthetic quality. In our work, we designed an aesthetic descriptor based on color information of local patches to asses the aesthetic quality of photographs. We employed the Bag of Words (BOW) model to describe our data. The BOW model is widely used in text analysis tasks due to its good performance. This model can also be adopted by computer vision tasks to classify and categorize images. With such a model, every photograph in our dataset was represented as a vector of visual words derived from the color descriptors. A Gaussian mixture model was used to cluster and verbalize photographs, which is proven to be highly effective in our classification task. The best performance we achieved in our experiments was 72.9% AUC.

ADLs are used to describe system architectures at a very high level of abstraction. The concrete ADLs are interested in generating code from an architectural description. AADL is a concrete language designed for embedded applications. It integrates a software and hardware specifications in its description. Several studies around AADL are devoted to the development of executable systems from their architectural descriptions, like Ocarina project. On the other hand, Java language is widely used and supported by the majority of platforms. In this paper, we present a tool called: AADL2Java, allowing Java code generation from an AADL specification. For this purpose, first we take advantage of the EMF framework to specify two meta-models depicting respectively the concepts of AADL and Java. Then, these two meta-models will be used to generate a Java structure of an AADL specification. AADL2Java tool forms an Eclipse plug-in, aiming to facilitate the automatic translation of AADL systems in Java program skeletons, which may be easily completed by the developer. This will reduce the gap between software architect and developer in the system design.

Computational models of emotions (CMEs) are software systems designed to synthesize the mechanisms of the human emotion process. They are included in cognitive agent architectures to endow Autonomous Agents (AAs) with abilities for the evaluation of emotional stimuli, the simulation and expression of emotional feelings, and the development of emotionally driven responses. Although the literature reports several developments of CMEs, there is still a wide range of challenges that remain unaddressed regarding their development process. A key challenge is the development of scalable CMEs whose architecture is capable of implementing novel findings about human emotions. In this paper, we discuss the challenge of scalable CMEs and present a case study that demonstrates how the step by step application of a methodology that takes advantage of psychological and biological findings leads to the design of scalable CMEs. The results of this paper aim at promoting the development of AAs capable of meeting the complex requirements of current applications.

Inpower systems because of uncertainty of the load curve and transfer of power between various utilities and loads block out situations will be created. In these situations the Flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) controllers play an important role in power system security enhancement. As the capital cost of these controllers is high, these controllers must be placed optimally. FACTS devices can regulate the active and reactive power control as well as adaptive to voltage-magnitude control simultaneously because of their flexibility and fast control characteristics. Placement of these devices at optimal location can lead to control in line flow and maintain bus voltages at required level and so improve the voltage profile, to improve load transfer capability, decreasing the losses in the system and operate the system within stable regions. This paper proposes a systematic method for finding optimal location of SVC to improve voltage profile of a power system under normal conditions and under contingency conditions with Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) Algorithm. An OPF with/without SVC using ABC algorithm is considered for healthy conditions and also for contingency conditions in simulation and compared with existing literature. Effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated on IEEE 30-bus test system.

A key decision for the synthesis of automotive embedded systems is the allocation of application software components to ECUs. Design Space Exploration (DSE) supports the decision by automatically characterizing and evaluating a large number of possible design alternatives, and thereby suggesting the optimal ones. A primary challenge for applying DSE methods to support this decision is to reduce the computation time of the DSE process while maintaining the generality and optimality. This paper exploits legacy system architectures and the AUTOSAR standard to preemptively reduce the design space, because both artifacts limit the flexibility of certain design variables. A new DES formulation incorporating the constraints of the legacy system architectures and the AUTOSAR standard is proposed in this paper. Computation result shows a large reduction of the computation time comparing to traditional modeling and formulations. The scalability of our method is also analyzed by testing it on a set of random problem instances.

Proportional navigation (PN) is the guidance law used by most missiles in operational use today. This method of guidance generates missile acceleration commands in proportion to the line-of-sight (LOS) rate. Flexible interceptor defines as a fast maneuverable fighter plane. So, optimal homing missile guidance must be required to improve realism in missile behavior. In the case of sensor(s) transient faults, the disconnection of the readings causes inappropriate actions. So the need for sensor fault detecting and estimating multiple sensor faults becomes an important issue to optimize and enhance the system performance. Redundant sensors can provide highly accurate sensor data and also reconfigure sensor network systems if some sensors failed. In this paper, optimal sensor configurations are investigated using a new proposed pseudo sensor enhancement method (PSEM). Fault detection prediction analysis of multi-sensor architecture is introduced to study different number of sensors with different arrangement architectures and to detect transient faults in each sensor. Then, the proposed PSEM is investigated to isolate and compensate for the transient faults. Finally, the optimal inertial navigation multi-sensor configurations using PSEM have been applied to the proportional navigation guidance (PNG) laws to investigate the optimal proportional navigation guidance. The simulation results of different sensor architecture configurations with applying the PSEM and PNG have been obtained and analyzed to demonstrate the performance. The comparison between the traditional (without PSEM) and the proposed (with PSEM) methods has been introduced to illustrate the enhancement in operational performance of the proposed method to meet the requirements for flexible interceptor applications.

In production testing of analog/RF ICs, application of standard specification-based tests for IC classification is not always an attractive option due to the high costs and test times involved. In this paper, a new test generation algorithm for IC classification is first developed that has the property that the corresponding DUT response signatures for devices from diverse process corners are maximally separable. In other words, the process space can be partitioned into a maximally large number of partitions and each tested IC can be uniquely diagnosed to lie in one such partition from its response to the applied test stimulus. Boolean zed representations of analog/RF circuits are used to facilitate rapid test stimulus generation. Next, the responses of ICs tested in production to the applied classification test are used to adaptively classify the ICs into clusters of "good", "bad" and "marginal" devices (TRAP). This is done through the use of probabilistic neural networks that do not require complete network retraining every time an IC with different input-output behavior is observed. The classification test applied helps in determining if a new device being tested is from a different process corner than encountered before, thereby aiding IC classification. simulation experiments show that the learning process is rapid and minimizes device misclassification with significant savings in test time.
