embedded systems which are used for monitoring and controlling safety and mission critical systems cannot be shut down for want of making changes to the ES software for the reasons of updating, adding and deleting tasks. ES software must evolve dynamically while the software is up and running due to the criticality reasons. Many architectures have been presented related to loaded systems and few related to embedded systems for effecting semantic evolution of the embedded software. Dynamic evolution of embedded software is quite complicated due to the availability of fewer resources and especially when the evolution has to be carried under the influence of a real time operating system (RTOS). In this paper the implementation of dynamic semantic evolution of embedded software which runs under an RTOS has been presented. © 2015 IEEE.

As daylight modeling and simulation abilities have progressed, a number of new annual daylighting metrics have been proposed to characterize the quality of daylight in a space. A critique of many of these metrics, however, involves how they model human and sensor controlled window shades and blinds. In particular, the majority of metrics model manual shade control in an ideal, unrealistic, manner- i.e., closed precisely when necessary. This paper explores a more realistic and granular algorithm that has recently been implemented within Sensor Placement Optimization Tool (SPOT Pro™) software. This algorithm allows for adjustments in sensitivity as well as delay when simulating manual shade control, thereby allowing modeling for a wider range of representative occupant behaviors. Preliminary analysis using the new, more elastic algorithm suggests that occupant delays in opening of shade controls can result in significant (50-100%) reductions in daylight availability. The contribution of the research is an initial exploration of the new algorithm to support more accurate modeling of shade control in the future.

Synchronous embedded systems are becoming more and more complicated and are usually implemented with integrated hardware/software solutions. This implementation manner brings new challenges to the traditional model-driven design environments such as SCADE and STATEMATE, that supports pure hardware or software design. In this paper, we propose a co-design tool Tsmart-Edola to facilitate the system developers, and automatically generate the executable VHDL code and C code from the formal verified SyncBlock computation model. SyncBlock is a lightweight high-level system specification model with well defined syntax, simulation and formal semantics. Based on which, the graphical model editor, graphical simulator, verification translator, and code generator are implemented and seamlessly integrated into the Tsmart-Edola. For evaluation, we apply Tsmart-Edola to the design of a real-world train controller based on the international standard IEC 61375. Several critical ambiguousness or bugs in the standard are detected during formal verification of the constructed system model. Furthermore, the generated VHDL code and C code of Tsmart-Edola outperform that of the state-of-the-art tools in terms of synthesized gate array resource consumption and binary code size. AUTOSAR is a software methodology commonly used in automotive software system design and implementation. It provides high level of abstraction for the designer through the concept of software components (SWC) and virtual function bus (VFB). Unfortunately, no mature simulation tool is available to simulate the system at the VFB level which disables evaluating the model before system integration. On the other hand, SystemC provides a framework to simulate, analyze, and verify software. Besides, it considers the timing behavior of hardware and communication buses. The similarities and analogies between SystemC modeling components and AUTOSAR software component (SWC) modeling encourages us to rely on SystemC to propose a flow to the designer of AUTOSAR system for timing simulation purpose. In this paper, we present a tool that uses SystemC simulation kernel to provide quick simulation for the designer of Automotive based systems.

With the advent of embedded and mobile computing techniques, software systems are increasingly operated in open and dynamic environments. Such systems desire self-adaptive capabilities. This paper proposes an agent-oriented approach to the modeling and simulation of distributed adaptive systems. The approach enables to construct structural and behavioral models at a high abstraction level, and to validate the models at design stage through model simulation. The modeling language facilitates devising decentralized adaption logic at both component and system levels. simulation demonstrates how a system dynamically re-organizes in response to the changes in the operating context. Case studies show that our approach can support various self-adaptation mechanisms with which a multi-agent system adjusts to internal failures, unexpected environment, or user's changing requirements.

The investigation of effective connectivity is one of the major topics in computational neuroscience to understand the interaction between spatially distributed neuronal units of the brain. Thus, a wide variety of methods has been developed during the last decades to investigate functional and effective connectivity in multivariate systems. Their spectrum ranges from model-based to model-free approaches with a clear separation into time and frequency range methods. We present in this simulation study a novel time domain approach based on Granger's principle of predictability, which allows frequency-selective considerations of directed interactions. It is based on a comparison of prediction errors of multivariate autoregressive models fitted to systematically modified time series. These modifications are based on signal decompositions, which enable a targeted cancellation of specific signal components with specific spectral properties. Depending on the embedded signal decomposition method, a frequency-selective or data-driven signal-adaptive Granger Causality Index may be derived.

In the field of autonomously operated robots it is quite common for a form of environment mapping to be implemented. The process of environment mapping requires standby time and processing time. The robot remains stationary and surveys the surroundings, then constructs an environmental representation and determines the appropriate path of travel. This process diminishes the fluidity of robot locomotion, resulting in limited applications. Through the application of fuzzy Petri nets (FPNs) with embedded memory module, an enhanced mapping method was proposed to overcome such a limitation. With the storage and reuse of key information, such as past calculations and decisions made by the robot, time spent in survey and analysis is reduced. Since this approach requires less processing time, the proposed method can be executed while the robot is in motion, continuously looping at frequent intervals. The proposed method brings the benefits of greater movement fluidity while also introducing the ability to navigate in a dynamic environment with less erratic decision making. The modeling and simulation results demonstrated an 8% increase in efficiency.

The search for optimal mapping of application (tasks) onto processor architecture (resources) is always an acute issue, as new types of heterogeneous multicore architectures are being proposed constantly. The physical allocation and temporal scheduling can be attempted at a number of levels, from abstract mathematical models and operational research solvers, to practical simulation and run-time emulation. This work belongs to the first category. As often in the embedded domain we take as optimality metrics a combination of power consumption (to be minimized) and performance (to be maintained). One specificity is that we consider a dedicated architecture, namely the *** ARM-based platform style that is found in recent Android smartphones. So now tasks can be executed either on fast, energy-costly cores, or slower energy-sober ones. The problem is even more complex since each processor may switch its running frequency, which is a natural trade-off between performance and power consumption. We consider also energy bonus when a full block (big or LITTLE) can be powered down. This dictates in the end a specific set of requirements and constraints, expressed with equations and inequations of a certain size, which must be fed to an appropriate solver (SMT solver in our case). Our original aim was (and still is) to consider whether these techniques would scale up in this case. We conducted experiments on several examples, and we describe more thoroughly a task graph application based on the tiled Cholesky decomposition algorithm, for its relevant size complexity. We comment on our findings and the modeling issues involved.

Performing a tsunami or storm surge simulation in real time is a highly challenging research topic that calls for a collaboration between mathematicians and computer scientists. One must combine mathematical models with numerical methods and rely on computational performance and code parallelization to produce accurate simulation results as fast as possible. The traditional modeling approaches require a lot of computing power and significant amounts of electrical energy;they are also highly dependent on uninterrupted access to a reliable power supply. This paper presents a concept how to develop suitable low power hardware architectures for tsunami and storm surge simulations based on cooperative software and hardware simulation. The main goal is to be able - if necessary - to perform simulations in-situ and battery-powered. For flood warning systems installed in regions with weak or unreliable power and computing infrastructure, this would significantly decrease the risk of failure at the most critical moments.

As systems continue to evolve they rely less on human decision-making and more on computational intelligence. This trend in conjunction to the available technologies for providing advanced sensing, measurement, process control, and communication leads us towards the new field of Cyber-Physical System (CPS). Although these systems exhibit remarkable characteristics, the increased complexity imposed by numerous components and services makes their design extremely difficult. This paper proposes a software-supported framework for reducing the design complexity regarding the modeling, as well as the simulation of CPS. For this purpose, a novel technique based on system scenarios is applied. Evaluation results prove the effectiveness of introduced framework, as we achieve to reduce mentionable the modeling and simulation complexity with a controllable overhead in accuracy.
