simulation is employed extensively to perform exploration of design spaces by computer designers. Contemporary simulation environments are now increasingly complex comprising of support for multiple cores and full operating systems. Resource use between simulation environments vary widely because of these different system contexts and the fact that multi-threaded applications have intrinsic non-determinism. In addition, more recent simulation environments use Dynamic Binary Instrumentation (DBI) traces collected on the system context (OS, library, threading API) of the host system. Methodologies that have been employed to validate and compare simulation frameworks are usually limited to comparing CPI and cache statistics and do not provide a detailed function-level breakdown or understanding of the source of mismatches. In this work, we attempt to identify and quantify the true sources of mismatch between a DBI framework and a full system simulation framework. We use memory traces of multi-threaded applications that have been annotated with function call information to allow for a breakdown of the source of mismatch within an application. To the best of our knowledge, this level of detail in comparison has not been attempted before, especially with traces of multi-threaded applications. In this study, we find that the sources of mismatch come mainly from threading mechanisms/threading API function calls, Library/System function calls and User Space condition synchronization. Based on the results of the study, we identify specific functions in each category of mismatch. We then propose a few ways to close the gap and enable more reliable simulation for design space exploration.

Summary form only given. Augmented reality, gesture interfaces, and automotive driver assistance systems enable novel user experiences, safer rides, and new usage models. Bringing these systems to market requires a power-efficient architecture and many billions of operations per second of processing. Widely adopted processing architectures like CPUs and GPUs can't fulfill the requirements, sparking a new class of video and vision processors. In this talk we'll give a quick overview of applications, typical algorithms, and their implications on computer architecture. We will focus on the automotive market, where computer vision is the key technology to enabling autonoumous vehicles hitting the road.

Engineers of next generation embedded systems heavily rely on virtual platforms as central tools in their design process. Yet, the ever increasing HW/SW complexity degrades the simulation performance of those platforms and threatens their viability as design tools. With multi-core workstations today being widely available, the transition towards parallel simulation technologies seems obvious. Recently published parallel SystemC simulators use time-decoupling to achieve high simulation performance on modern SMP machines. However, those simulators have to identify all cross-thread communication ahead of time. This work presents an approach how to overcome this limitation and to enable time-decoupled simulation for mainstream SystemC simulators, achieving a speedup of up to 3.4× on a quad-core host.

Parallel Discrete Event System Specification (PDEVS) is a well-known formalism used to model and simulate Discrete Event systems. This formalism uses an abstract simulator that defines a set of abstract algorithms that are parallel by nature. To implement simulators using these abstract algorithms, several architectures were proposed. Most of these architectures follow distributed approaches that may not be appropriate for single core processors or microcontrollers. In order to reuse efficiently PDEVS models in this type of systems, we define a new architecture that provides a single threaded execution by passing messages in a call/return fashion to simplify the execution time analysis. © 2015 Society for modeling & simulation international (SCS).

In this work, we introduce an application autotuning framework to dynamically adapt applications in multicore architectures. In particular, the framework exploits design-time knowledge and multi-objective requirements expressed by the user, to drive the autotuning process at the runtime. It also exploits a monitoring infrastructure to get runtime feed-back and to adapt to external changing conditions. The intrusiveness of the autotuning framework in the application (in terms of refactoring and lines of code to be added) has been kept limited, also to minimize the integration cost. To assess the proposed framework, we carried out an experimental campaign to evaluate the overhead, the relevance of the described features and the efficiency of the framework.

This paper presents a proof-of-concept for a modular SystemC SIL (Software-in-the-Loop) simulation environment, using a blackboard-like architecture. The proposed SIL framework integrates embedded control software with simulators developed in SystemC/SystemC-AMS or external tools, like MATLAB. The environment has been validated by a heating application for a professional printer, as example of an MDVP (Multi-Domain Virtual Prototyping) application. Our goal is to evaluate the use of SystemC/SystemC-AMS and to address the challenges in developing multiple-domain prototypes and blackboard-like SIL frameworks using this technology.

After their success in the high performance and desktop market, Graphic Processing Units (GPUs), that can be used for general purpose computing are introduced for embedded systems on a chip (SOCs). Due to some advanced architectural features, like massive simultaneous multithreading, static performance analysis and high-level timing simulation are difficult to apply to code running on these systems. This paper extends a method for performance simulation of GPUs. The method uses automated performance annotations in the application's OpenCL C source code, and an extended performance model for derivation of a kernels runtime from metrics produced by the execution of annotated kernels. The final results are then generated using a probabilistic resource conflict model. The model reaches an accuracy of 90% on most test cases and delivers a higher average accuracy than previous methods.

Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) are in most cases safety- and mission-critical. Standard design techniques used for securing embedded systems are not suitable for CPS due to the restricted computation and communication budget available in the latter. In addition, the sensitivity of sensed data and the presence of actuation components further increase the security requirements of CPS. To address these issues, it is necessary to provide new design methods in which security is considered from the beginning of the whole design flow and addressed in a holistic way. In this paper, we focus on the design of secure CPS as part of the complete CPS design process, and provide insights into new requirements on platform-aware design of control components, design methodologies and architectures posed by CPS design. We start by discussing methods for the multi-disciplinary modeling, simulation, tools, and software synthesis challenges for CPS. We also present a framework for design of secure control systems for CPS, while taking into account properties of the underlying computation and communication platforms. Finally, we describe the security challenges in the computing hardware that is used in CPS. © 2015 IEEE.
