Virtual Platforms (VPs) are advantageous to develop and debug complex software for multi- and many-processor systems-on-chip (MPSoCs). VPs provide unrivalled controllability and visibility of the target, which can be exploited to examine bugs that cannot be reproduced easily in real hardware. However, VPs as used for debugging provide only traditional interfaces, such as step-based debuggers and traces, that do little to help with the enormous complexity of MPSoCs and their parallel software. Finding a bug is still largely left to the developer's experience and intuition, using manual means rather than automated solutions. To bridge this gap, this paper presents a novel VP debug visualization and control framework for concurrent software that allows examining and steering the target by means of an abstract representation of its inter-task interactions. Our framework reduces the effort required to understand complex concurrency patterns and helps to expose bugs.

In the last years the presence of embedded devices in everyday life has grown exponentially. The market of these devices imposes conflicting requirements such as cost, performance and energy. The use of Multiprocessor systems on Chip (MPSoCs) is a widely accepted solution to provide a trade-off between these demands. However, programming MPSoCs is still a cumbersome task. Several research efforts have addressed this challenge in two complementary directions: paradigms for parallel programming and tools for parallelism extraction. However, most of these efforts are focused on the high performance domain and they do not consider the characteristics of the underlying platform. In this paper, we present an approach to extract multiple forms of parallelism from sequential C code, which is applied to widespread Android mobile devices. We show the effectiveness of our work by parallelizing relevant embedded benchmarks on a quad-core Nexus 7 tablet.

In this paper a SystemC simulator for Network-on-Chip (NoC) based Multiprocessor systems-on-Chip (MPSoCs) is presented. The simulator currently supports mesh topology with wormhole switching and several routing algorithms such as XY-, a minimal West-First and an adaptive West-First algorithm. The impact of routing algorithms regarding performance can be analyzed by means of the presented simulator. In order to simulate a heterogeneous MPSoC, ARM processors and MicroBlazes can be attached to the NoC. Processor and peripheral models used within the test platforms are provided by Imperas/OVP. Moreover, traffic generators are available to analyze the system. An additional SystemC component enables the readout of simulation time from within the application. For evaluation of the simulator multiple platforms and applications were put under test and compared with a hardware implementation. The comparison shows that the simulator improves the development of MPSoCs by early estimation of system requirements.

Today's multi-processor system-on-chip (MPSoC) systems increasingly have to deal with dynamically changing application workload scenarios. To cope with such dynamic application behavior, these systems could dynamically adapt the mapping of application tasks onto the underlying system resources to improve the system's performance. However, such performance improvement comes at the cost of a system reconfiguration in which application tasks may have to be migrated between processors. This trade-off implies that reconfiguring the system is only beneficial when the performance gains outweight the re-configuration overhead. To address this problem for MPSoCs, this paper presents a scenario-based run-time resource management framework with the ability of adaptivity throttling that uses the history of application scenario execution behavior to predict the actual benefit of a system reconfiguration to allow for explicitly deciding (at runtime) whether or not to reconfigure. Experimental results reveal that our proposed approach substantially improves the system's efficiency as compared to MPSoCs that do not provide such intelligent reconfiguration control.

This paper investigates the problem of estimation of the wheelchair position in an environment with noisy measurements. The measuring system is based on two odometers placed on the axis of the wheels combined with a magnetic compass to determine the position and orientation. The determination of displacements is implemented by an accelerometer. Data coming from these sensors are combined and used as inputs to def-ferent fusion architecture with an extended Kalman filter (EKF) and Unscented KALMAN Filter(UKF). four data fusion architectures MFekf (measurement fusion extended Kalman filter), SVFekf (state vector fusion extended Kalman filter), MFukf (measurement fusion Unscented Kalman filter), SVFukf (state vector fusion Unscented Kalman filter) are proposed to merge the available measurements. Comparative studies between these four methods shows that the MFekf architecture provides estimates of the states with relatively less uncertainty compared to MFukf. The odometers measurements give the position with relatively high uncertainty followed by the accelerometer measurements. This shows the need for fusion in a navigation system. The results of this simulation show the effectiveness of the proposed architectures.

Mobile devices have been identified as promising platforms for interactive vision-based applications. However, this type of applications still pose significant challenges in terms of latency, throughput and energy-efficiency. In this context, the integration of reconfigurable architectures on mobile devices allows dynamic reconfiguration to match the computation and data flow of interactive applications, demonstrating significant performance benefits compared to general purpose architectures. This paper presents concepts laying on platform level adaptability, exploring the acceleration of vision-based interactive applications through the utilization of three reconfigurable architectures: A low-power EnCore processor with a Configurable Flow Accelerator co-processor, a hybrid reconfigurable SIMD/MIMD platform and Transport-Triggered Architecture-based processors. The architectures are evaluated and compared with current processors, analyzing their advantages and weaknesses in terms of performance and energy-efficiency when implementing highly interactive vision-based applications. The results show that the inclusion of reconfigurable platforms on mobile devices can enable the computation of several computationally heavy tasks with high performance and small energy consumption while providing enough flexibility.

New optimality principles are put forth based on competitive model business planning. A Generalized MinMax local optimum dynamic programming algorithm is presented and applied to business model computing where predictive techniques can determine local optima. Based on a systems model an enterprise is not viewed as the sum of its component elements, but the product of their interactions. The paper starts with introducing a systems approach to business modeling. A competitive business modeling technique, based on the author's planning techniques is applied. Systemic decisions are based on common organizational goals, and as such business planning and resource assignments should strive to satisfy higher organizational goals. It is critical to understand how different decisions affect and influence one another. Here, a business planning example is presented where systems thinking technique, using Causal Loops, are applied to complex management decisions. Predictive modeling specifics are briefed. A preliminary optimal game modeling technique is presented in brief with applications to innovation and R&D management. Conducting gap and risk analysis can assist with this process. This paper presents a novel decentralized approach for the diagnosis of permanent faults in automotive Electrical and Electronic (E/E) architectures. Both, the safety-critical real-time requirements and the distributed nature of these systems make fault tolerance in general and fault diagnosis in particular a crucial and challenging issue. At the same time, high unit numbers in manufacturing add cost efficiency as an important criterion during system design, which is conflicting with the use of often expensive explicit fault diagnosis hardware. To address these challenges, we propose a diagnosis framework that consists of two stages. In the first diagnosis determination stage, potential fault scenarios, such as defective Electronic Control Units (ECUs), are investigated to obtain a set of diagnosis functions. Specific diagnosis functions are used for each component in the network at runtime to determine whether a certain fault scenario is present. In the second diagnosis optimization stage, an optimization of diagnosis functions is proposed to determine trade-offs between diagnosis times and the number of monitored message streams. Experimental results based on 100 synthetic test cases give evidence of the feasibility and efficiency of the presented framework. Finally, an automotive case study demonstrates the practicability and details of our fault diagnosis approach.

The shift towards more and more complex System-on-Chips fosters high-level modeling (HLM) of new systems in order to provide required time-to-first-virtual-prototype and adequate simulation speed. Using HLM furthermore allows running exhaustive simulations are, enabling the developer to gain a plethora of information from the system during simulation. Reporting, logging, analyzing, and interpreting this vast amount of data requires a potent report and logging system. This paper proposes such a solution: the presented system is build on the foundations of SystemC's sc_report class and maintains full compatibility with it. To provide extensive search and analysis features, the proposed solution features Python-based scripting capabilities and supports attached key-value pairs to each report message. Using highly efficient black- and whitelisting filters empowers the user to reported events during runtime and suppresses all irrelevant reports in order to achieve fast simulation. Filter rules are fully scriptable and interpreted during simulation runtime, allowing dynamic adaption of the rules based on events occurred. All proposed mechanisms were evaluated under real-world conditions in an existing virtual prototype platform, including a report database backend, enabling easy analysis of the generated data.
