Hybrid systems modeling languages are widely used in the development of embedded systems. Two representatives are Simulink/Stateflow 1 that combine Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs), data-flow and difference equations, hierarchical automata a la StateCharts [14] together with imperative features; and the Modelica language [1] 2 based on DAEs with features for modeling discrete components. Ptolemy II 3 is another example in which several models of computation are combined [15]. The formal verification of hybrid systems has been extensively studied [9]. Yet, we share the viewpoint of Lee and Zheng that hybrid modeling languages are best viewed as programming languages that happen to have a hybrid systems semantics [16, 17]. This raises important questions related to their design, semantics and implementation, to get efficient and reliable simulations as well as provably equivalent embedded target code. While sequential code generation in hybrid modeling tools is routinely used for efficient simulation, it is little used or not used at all to produce target embedded code in critical applications that are submitted to strong safety requirements. This results in a break in the development chain: parts of applications must be rewritten into sequential code and all properties verified on the source model cannot be trusted and have to be reverified on the target code.

In the last two decades, energy has become a crucial resource whose consumption must be minimized while designing computing systems. This has affected every aspect of computing ranging from large scale supercomputers and data centers to small scale (but high volume) embedded systems comprising filters, digital signal processors (DSPs), and accelerators. Energy constraints play a particularly crucial role in battery operated devices (cell phones, wearables) and other energy constrained systems like unmanned aerial vehicles and sensor networks. In this backdrop of efforts to improve energy efficiency, a very interesting technique aimed at trading error for energy gains emerged over a decade ago. Typical computing systems are engineered to be exact. Energy gains have been achieved while compromising soft constraints like running time. This new technique called inexact computing or approximate computing aims push the envelope to achieve energy gains at the cost of an increased inexactness or error in the system. This radical shift has often yielded surprisingly significant energy gains with little to no side effects because many algorithms and applications (like DSP applications, big data applications, large scale numerical models) are inherently tolerant to error.

In recent years several approaches for parallel SystemC simulation were proposed, which are mainly based on the synchronous parallel simulation principle. We propose a new simulation approach which uses the asynchronous parallel simulation principle. By using an appropriate modeling style where the communication is modeled by transaction events our kernel can exploit the inherent parallelism of simulation models. Experiments show that our approach can exploit the inherent parallelism in cases where the classical synchronous approach cannot. In this paper the underlying simulation algorithm and the modeling constructs are presented.

With the advent of embedded and mobile computing techniques, software systems are increasingly operated in open and dynamic environments. Such systems desire self-adaptive capabilities. This paper proposes an agent-oriented approach to the modeling and simulation of distributed adaptive systems. The approach enables to construct structural and behavioral models at a high abstraction level, and to validate the models at design stage through model simulation. The modeling language facilitates devising decentralized adaption logic at both component and system levels. simulation demonstrates how a system dynamically re-organizes in response to the changes in the operating context. Case studies show that our approach can support various self-adaptation mechanisms with which a multi-agent system adjusts to internal failures, unexpected environment, or user's changing requirements.

ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance systems) algorithms increasingly use heavy image processing operations. To embed this type of algorithms, semiconductor companies offer many heterogeneous architectures. These SoCs (System on Chip) are composed of different processing units, with different capabilities, and often with massively parallel computing unit. Due to the complexity of these SoCs, predicting if a given algorithm can be executed in real time on a given architecture is not trivial. In fact it is not a simple task for automotive industry actors to choose the most suited heterogeneous SoC for a given application. Moreover, embedding complex algorithms on these systems remains a difficult task due to heterogeneity, it is not easy to decide how to allocate parts of a given algorithm on the different computing units of a given SoC. In order to help automotive industry in embedding algorithms on heterogeneous architectures, we propose a novel approach to predict performances of image processing algorithms applicable on different types of computing units. Our methodology is able to predict a more or less wide interval of execution time with a degree of confidence using only high level description of algorithms, and a few characteristics of computing units.

Nowadays, research on GPU processor architecture is extraordinarily active since these architectures offer much more performance per watt than CPU architectures. This is the main reason why massive deployment of GPU multiprocessors is considered one of the most feasible solutions to attain exascale computing capabilities. In this context, ongoing GPU architecture research is required to improve GPU programmability as well as to integrate CPU and GPU cores in the same die. One of the most important research topics in current GPUs, is the GPU memory hierarchy, since its design goals are very different from those of conventional CPU memory hierarchies. To explore novel designs to better support General Purpose computing in GPUs (GPGPU computing) as well as to improve the performance of GPU and CPU/GPU systems, researchers often require advanced microarchitectural simulators with detailed models of the memory subsystem. Nevertheless, due to fast speed at which current GPU architectures evolve, simulation accuracy of existing state-of-the-art simulators suffers. This paper focuses on accurately modeling the GPU memory subsystem. We identified three main aspects that should be modeled with more accuracy: i) miss status holding registers, ii) coalescing vector memory requests, and iii) non-blocking GPU stores. In this sense, we extend the Multi2Sim heterogeneous CPU/GPU processor simulator to model these aspects with enough accuracy. Experimental results show that if these aspects are not considered in the simulation framework, performance deviations can rise in some applications up to 70%, 75%, and 60%, respectively.

In the domain of embedded systems, the complexities involved in embedded software development are being successfully addressed by the emerging field of model-based software development and testing. However, in embedded systems, the underlying embedded software is often expected to collaborate with various hardware, mechanical, electrical modules/technologies. To address this aspect of heterogeneity in embedded systems, practitioners of model-based embedded software engineering are required to use more than one modeling language. This is essential to address the multi-faceted design aspects/requirements of an embedded system. This paper elaborates on the existing data interchange and coupling mechanisms between embedded software sub-systems modeled using UML and Matlab/Simulink. While there are some existing coupling mechanisms for data exchange among heterogenous modeling domains, they are all not applicable to all real-time operating systems and/or limited to a few simulation studies. This paper addresses the aforementioned gaps and proposes a simple, generic methodology for data exchange between events (in UML domain) and signals (in Matlab/Simulink domain). The proposed approach is elaborated using a seesaw (real-word) embedded software system application scenario example. Initial prototype implementation of the proposed approach, experimental results and some future directions are outlined.

A hypothesis test based methodology for comparing propagation loss as reported by modeling and simulation (M&S) and a real life Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) platform is proposed. The methodology is based on hypothesis testing and statistical evaluation of experimental and simulation data. A software tool for verification of the simulation results is developed in order to automate the process. The comparison tool demonstrates the need for simulation verification by showing cases where simulation and experimental measurements do not agree;hence the simulation model is not representative of actual system being modeled. Experimentation with the platform establishes an empirical path loss model, to be used in simulations.

Network-on-Chips (NoCs) are needed to interconnect the cores which are processors and memories in systems on Chips (SoCs). For designing new NoCs, highly accurate simulation and efficient design procedure are desired. In this paper, we present C-based RTL design method for circuit switched NoC in which RTL structure of NoC is directly described in dataflow C coding style and a fast simulation and verification model by the same C code. Also, we show how the method is used to accelerate the design and verification of the NoC by designing a simple NoC architecture. The entire C model consists of about 200 lines, including C header file. Also, it generates the RTL descriptions which consists of 1,500 lines of Verilog code.
