Security is becoming the primary concern in today's embedded systems. Network-on-Chip (NoC) based communication architectures have emerged as an alternative to shared bus mechanism in Multiprocessor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) devices, and the increasing number and functionality of processing cores has made such systems vulnerable to security attacks. In this paper an id and address verification (IAV) security module is presented, which is embedded in each router at the communication level. IAV verifies the identity and address range to be accessed by incoming and outgoing data packets in a NoC-based many-core shared memory architecture. Our IAV architecture is implemented on a FPGA device for functional verification and evaluated in terms of its area and power consumption overhead. For FPGA-based systems, the IAV module can be reconfigured at run-time through partial reconfiguration. In addition, a cycle-accurate simulation is carried out to analyse the performance overhead for different network configurations. To better exploit the capabilities offered by multi-core high-end embedded systems, new parallel programming paradigms, such as OpenCL, combined with effective resource management should be adopted. However, dealing with mixed workloads and time varying scenarios is still an open problem. This paper addresses such challenges by exploiting the synergy between Design Space Exploration and Run-Time Resource Management to achieve effective and flexible system-wide application adaptivity. The proposed approach and related toolset have been validated on a multi-core NUMA platform, showing significant improvements in terms of QoS and resource utilization compared to conventional application-level optimization strategies.

We continue to consider the question of what language features are needed to effectively model cyber-physical systems (CPS). In previous work, we proposed using a core language as a way to study this question, and showed how several basic aspects of CPS can be modeled clearly in a language with a small set of constructs. This paper reports on the result of our analysis of two, more complex, case studies from the domain of rigid body dynamics. The first one, a quadcopter, illustrates that previously proposed core language can support larger, more interesting systems than previously shown. The second one, a serial robot, provides a concrete example of why we should add language support for static partial derivatives, namely that it would significantly improve the way models of rigid body dynamics can be expressed.

In this paper we will present a computational model of area CA3b in Hippocampus and through simulations show that this system is capable of sustaining a rhythm without any external input using only a small portion of its *** model proposed here was devised using the biological data available on CA3. Our simulations have shown that the rhythmic emergent behaviour is sustainable and that we can alter its characteristics (i.e. spectrum) by altering the overall physical characteristics of the network such as the overall size of the structure itself or the extent of the connectivity field.

This paper investigates the relationship between two ways of analyzing streaming systems: trace analysis for dataflow programs with firing, and network calculus for network flows. While the former focuses on the structure of the dataflow computation while idealizing the interaction with the environment, the latter characterizes the temporal properties of flows of data, largely abstracting from the computations that connect them. In this work, we show how a trace analysis can be used to derive a description of communication behavior of a dataflow program in terms of network calculus, which is then applied to answering a question about the buffer sizing. The example being studied is an MPEG-4 video decoder.

The constantly increasing computational power of the embedded systems is based on the integration of a large number of cores on a single chip. In such complex platforms, the synchronization of the accesses of the shared memory data is becoming a major issue, since it affects the performance of the whole system. This problem, which is currently a challenge in the embedded systems, has been studied in the High Performance Computing domain, where several message passing algorithms have been designed to efficiently avoid the limitations coming from locking. In this work, inspired from the work on message passing synchronization algorithms in the High Performance Computing domain we design and evaluate a set of synchronization algorithms for multi-core embedded platforms. We compare them with the corresponding lock-based implementations and prove that message passing synchronization algorithms can be efficiently utilized in multi-core embedded systems. By using message passing synchronization instead of lock-based, we managed to reduce the execution time of our benchmark up to 29.6%.

Dataflow models serve as useful abstractions of digital hardware in signal processing and other application domains. But when can one say that a certain dataflow model faithfully captures a given piece of hardware? To answer this question we develop a formal conformance relation between the heterogeneous formalisms of (1) finite state machines with synchronous semantics, used to model hardware, and (2) asynchronous processes communicating via queues, used as a formal model for dataflow. The conformance relation preserves performance properties such as worst-case throughput and latency.

Recent design methodologies and tools aim at enhancing the design productivity by providing a software development platform before defining the final MPSoC architecture details. However, the simulation can only be efficiently performed when using a modeling and simulation engine that supports the system behavior description in a high abstraction level. The lack of MPSoC virtual platform prototyping integrating both scalable hardware and software in order to create and evaluate new methodologies and tools motivated us to develop MPSoCBench. This toolset is a scalable set of MPSoCs including four different ISAs (PowerPC, MIPS, SPARC, and ARM) organized in platforms with 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 cores, cross-compilers, IPs, interconnections, and 17 parallel version of software from well-known benchmarks. This tool also provides power consumption estimation for MIPS and SPARC processors. The MPSoCBench sums 864 different configurations automated through scripts.

Matlab/Simulink is an industrial tool that is widely used to design and validate control algorithms for embedded control systems using numerical simulation. A Simulink model of a control system typically defines one or more control algorithms together with their environment. Such models exhibit both discrete and continuous dynamics, simulated by discretizing time. On the other hand, a colored Petri net (CPN) is a well known formalism for modeling behavior of discrete event systems. In this paper, we give a formal semantics to Simulink using the CPN formalism, by describing how Simulink models can be expressed as a CPN. We also show how Petri nets can be simulated in Simulink. Finally, we show how a CPN model can be used for performance analysis of a Simulink model. © 2014 SciTePress. All rights reserved.

In today's fast changing electric utilities sector demand response (DR) programs are a relatively inexpensive means of reducing peak demand and providing ancillary services. Advancements in embedded systems and communication technologies are paving the way for more complex DR programs based on transactive control. Such complex systems highlight the importance of modeling and simulation tools for studying and evaluating the effects of different control strategies for DR. Considerable efforts have been directed at modeling thermo- statically controlled appliances. These models however operate with only one degree of freedom, typically, the thermal mass temperature. This paper proposes a two-degree-of-freedom residential space heating system composed of a thermal storage unit and forced convection system. simulation results demonstrate that such system is better suited for maintaining thermal comfort and allows greater flexibility for DR programs. The performance of several control strategies are evaluated, as well as the effects of model and weather parameters on thermal comfort and power consumption.
