SoCs can be implemented on a single FPGA, offering designers a unique opportunity for Embedded systems. Instead of defining a fixed architecture early in the design process, the reconfigurable platform allows architectural redesign to meet the system's specific needs. However, the ability to instantiate new modules in the reconfigurable hardware provides a unique set of challenges for integration, particularly to the software (SW) designer. Specifically, the Operating System (OS) cannot automatically abstract these platform changes without redesign. In this paper, we present FUSE, a framework for HW accelerator abstraction that provides: 1) transparency to the SW designer at the application level;and 2) OS support for easy HW accelerator integration. We illustrate FUSE as an API for an embedded Linux OS with POSIX threads on Xilinx's MicroBlaze on a Virtex5. For three different applications and HW accelerators, we achieve performance speedups ranging from 6.4-37x.

This paper presents an algorithm for the parameterization of variable length Markov chains (VLMC). The disadvantages of the conventional algorithms especially in the application field of stochastic use models are discussed. The algorithm proposed in this paper eliminates these disadvantages by the usage of statistical methods to decide which states are accepted for the model. The benefit of this procedure is two-fold. First the resulting models perform better in respect to prediction quality, even they contain fewer states. Second, each state gets a more significant meaning. This makes the algorithm suitable for analyzing user-traces. An example for this application is described.

Vibration monitoring uses data gathered from accelerometers to study kinetic phenomena in applications such as: structural health monitoring and predictive maintenance. The Internet of Things (IoT) has the potential to greatly expand the range and scope of vibration monitoring applications by delivering long-life wireless sensors that can be cost-effectively embedded in hard to reach places such as;within machines, infrastructure or the built environment. However, achieving this vision is difficult due to the stringent resource constraints of contemporary IoT devices and networks. This has led the research community to develop a creative range of application-specific near-sensor processing firmware. However, systematic support for generic vibration monitoring on resource-poor IoT networks remains an open problem. We tackle this challenge by introducing ReFrAEN, a software framework that efficiently enables a wide range of vibration monitoring applications on IoT networks. ReFrAEN achieves this through a deeply configurable combination of compression techniques and data processing algorithms. These features allow end-users to effectively trade-off between resource consumption and data resolution in order to meet battery life constraints while preserving sufficient data quality to support the target application. Our evaluation shows that ReFrAEN is capable of identifying bearing faults, while dramatically improving battery lifetime and reducing latency in comparison to prior approaches.
