With the increasing needs of the automotive industry, 3GPP is developing new functionalities in the long term evolution (LTE) cellular technology to specifically address vehicle-to-everything (V2X) connectivity, including in particular vehicle to-vehicle (V2V) direct communications. At the basis of most enabled applications, either dealing with safety, traffic management or infotainment, it is of particular importance the cooperative awareness service, corresponding to messages sent periodically in broadcast by all vehicles to inform about their status and intentions. To optimize the usage of radio resources, allocations of packets are required to be smartly performed, following algorithms that currently represent a challenging open issue. Having in mind to face the design and validation of resource allocation in LTE-V2V networks when cooperative awareness is addressed, we implemented a simulator, called LTEV2Vsim, which will be shared with all the interested researchers. LTEV2Vsim is written in MATLAB and manages vehicles mobility either following simple models or more complex and realistic input files, and performs allocations following different implemented algorithms, both network controlled and autonomous. Finally, to demonstrate the possibilities of LTEV2Vsim, some example results are provided.

Multispectral face recognition systems are widely used in various access control applications. The vulnerability of multispectral face recognition sensors towards low-cost Presentation Attack Instrument (PAI) such as printed photos used in attacks has emerged as a serious security threat. In this paper, we present a novel framework to detect presentation attacks against an extended multispectral face sensor. The proposed framework stems from the idea of exploring the complementary information available from different bands of an extended multispectral face sensor. To this extent, two different frameworks are proposed where the first framework is based on image fusion and the second builds on the Presentation Attack Detection (PAD) score level fusion. Extensive experiments are carried out on the extended multispectral face sensor database comprising of 50 subjects with two different presentation attacks generated using the printed photo artefacts. The obtained results indicate the superior performance of the PAD score level fusion on detecting both known and unknown attacks.

A field programmable Gate Array (FPGA) family was designed to match a programmable fabric die built in 14nm process technology with 28Gb/s transceiver dice. The 2.5D packaging (Fig. 3.3.1) uses embedded interconnect bridges (EMIB) [1]. 20nm transceivers were reused enabling a transceiver roadmap independent of FPGA fabric. Fig. 3.3.2 shows a 560mm 2 fabric die and six transceiver dice. The programmable fabric contains 2.8M logic elements, DSP, memory components, and routing interconnect operating at up to 1GHz. applications drove the need for improved flexibility and security of the FPGA configuration system. A triple-modular redundant microprocessor-based secure device manager (SDM) was designed and is programmed by embedded software.

Semantic segmentation is an important task for autonomous vehicle navigation in offroad environments. However, several natural factors make this problem uniquely challenging. For example, road segmentation is often difficult under heavy shadow or steep terrain, and dangerous muddy water puddles may have the similar visual appearance to dirt road surfaces (and thus are hard to identify). To tackle these challenges, we present a semantic segmentation system based on a two-stage hierarchical fusion pipeline. The first stage improves the road segmentation by effectively fusing information from camera and 3D Lidar point cloud. The second stage is dedicated to detecting water puddles, based on the results from the first stage. Due to the parallelized architecture, our system can be deployed for real-time applications. We achieved an Fl score of around 93% for road segmentation and 80% for water puddle segmentation at more than 10 Hz.

Two operands addition is an essential unit in many embedded and digital signal processors as it is considered as the basic building block for other arithmetic operations. However, as one of the processor's performance issues, the carry propagation during the addition operation limits the speed of arithmetic operation. Thus, efficient adder design and implementation attracted many digital arithmetic designers especially those implemented for reconfigurable hardware such as field programmable Gate Array (FPGA) design. In this paper, we provide efficient FPGA implementations of five parallel prefix adders namely: Kogge-Stone Adder (KSA), Brent-Kung Adder (BKA), Han-Carlson Adder (HCA), Sklansky Adder (SkA), and Ladner-Fischer Adder (LFA) using Altera Cyclone IV as a target FPGA device. As a result, the comparison between different adders shows that KSA recorded the best values of critical path delay with 4.504 ns for 64 bits while BKA recorded the least design area results with 223 logic elements for the same bit length. Finally, the comparison with previous designs illustrates that the proposed adders' implementations have enhanced the performance over many state- of-the-art designs with even more than 200%.

Down's Syndrome (DS) is a genetic birth disorder that occurs in fetuses, which is typically associated with physical growth delays, mild to moderate mental disability, characteristic facial features and a short life expectancy rate. The paper focuses on extracting markers from the Prenatal Screening (first trimester test) reports of patients. Few of the attributes are crown rump length, nuchal translucency, age, smoking habits, history of previous pregnancies with Trisomy 21 and presence of the nasal bone, extracted using Optical Character Recognition. The collection of reports is subjected to various clustering techniques like K-means, K-medoids, DBSCAN (Density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise), Hierarchical clustering in order to deal with the problem of lack of labels of training data-set since it is bound by confidentiality and ethical issues. The paper is pivoted around the novel technique of handling skewed data-set using ADASYN (Adaptive Synthetic Sampling Approach) over-sampling approach to overcome class bias because the data set in hand has only rare cases of `High Risk' DS. The reports are further subjected to ML (Machine Learning) ensemble of supervised learning methodologies like Naive Bayes, Random Forest and ANN (Artificial Neural Network) to determine the posterior probability of the foetus suffering from Down's Syndrome. The paper envisions building an architecture that can be used as a tool to aid gynecologists by providing numerical probability measure that is representative of the Down Syndrome risk in the foetus and on the basis of this value, the gynecologist can recommend whether the patient should take up further invasive [amniocentesis and CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling)] tests that are clear indicators of DS. The paper utilizes a live Indian data set and hence is reflective of the current scenario of DS in India. One of the challenges in self-adaptive systems concerns how to make adaptation to themselves at runtime in response to possible and even unexpected changes from the environment and/or user goals. A feasible solution to this challenge is rule-based adaptation, in which, adaptation decisions are made according to predefined rules that specify what particular actions should be performed to react to different changing events from the environment. Although it has the characteristic of highly-efficient decision making for adaptation, rule-based adaptation has two limitations: 1. no guarantee that those predefined rules will lead to optimal or nearly-optimal adaptation results;2. weak support to evolve these rules to cope with non-stationary environment and changeable user goals at runtime. In this paper, we propose a reinforcement learning-based framework to the generation and evolution of software adaptation rules. This framework manifests two key capabilities for self-adaptation: 1. the capability of automatically learning adaptation rules from different goal settings at the offline phase;2. the capability of automatically evolving adaptation rules from real-time information about the environment and user goals at the online phase. The two capabilities are built on the combination of reinforcement learning and case-based reasoning techniques. This framework improves the existing rule-based adaptation from two points: the flexibility of adaptation logic, and the quality of adaptation rules. We evaluate this framework through a case study of an E-commerce web application, which shows that this framework improves both the efficiency and effectiveness of self-adaptation.

We propose a new Iteratively Reweighted Least Squares (IRLS) algorithm for the problem of recovering a matrix X is an element of R-d1 x d2 of rank r << min (d(1), d(2)) from incomplete linear observations, solving a sequence of quadratic problems. The easily implementable algorithm, which we call Harmonic Mean Iteratively Reweighted Least Squares (HM-IRLS), is superior compared to state-of-the-art algorithms for the low-rank recovery problem in several performance aspects. More specifically, the strategy HM-IRLS uses to optimize a non-convex Schatten-p penalization to promote low-rankness carries three major strengths, in particular for the matrix completion setting. First, we show empirically that, starting from a trivial initialization, it converges globally to a low-rank minimizer of the non-convex Schatten-p objective function for a large number of interesting cases, for which other (non-) convex optimization approaches fail to recover a low-rank matrix. Secondly, as a main theoretical result, we prove that HM-IRLS, unlike other IRLS variants, exhibits a locally superlinear rate of convergence if the linear observations fulfill a suitable null space property. This rate is of order 2 - p, depending on the non-convexity parameter p, and thus arbitrarily close to quadratic for p << 1, which is accurately confirmed by our numerical experiments. Thirdly, our experiments show that HM-IRLS exhibits an empirical recovery probability close to 1 even for very close to optimal sample complexities, i.e., already for significantly fewer linear observations than any other tractable approach in the literature.

Many online application services are now provided by cloud-deployed VM clusters. Although economical, VMs in the cloud are prone to interference due to contention for physical resources among colocated users. Worse, this interference is dynamic and unpredictable. Current provider-centric solutions are application-oblivious and are thus not always aware of the user's SLO requirements or application bottlenecks. Further, such solutions rely on VM scheduling and migration, approaches that are not agile enough to mitigate volatile interference. This paper presents DIAL, an interference-aware load balancer that can be employed by cloud users without requiring any assistance from the provider. DIAL addresses time-varying interference by dynamically shifting load away from compromised VMs without violating the application's tail latency SLOs. The key idea behind DIAL is to infer the demand for contended resources on the physical hosts, which is otherwise hidden from users. Estimates of the colocated load are then used to drive the load distribution for the application VMs. Our experimental results on OpenStack and AWS clouds show that DIAL can reduce application tail latencies by as much as 70% and 48% compared to interference-oblivious and existing interference-aware load balancers, respectively.

Doppler radars are low cost and light weight sensors that have a potential to find wide applications in building a large team of mobile vehicle platforms. Because of the nonlinearity associated with the measurement from Doppler radars, it is both interesting and challenging to extract meaningful information from the low cost sensors. Building upon the authors' previous work on self localization with a feature-based map with known landmark associations using Doppler radars and an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), this paper investigates the effects of positioning and the number of landmarks in a feature-based map on the accuracy of the position estimation of a robot. The computations of Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) at the terminating sample show that the CRLB has a drastic reduction when the number of landmarks is increased from 1 to 2 while the root mean square errors (RMSE) of EKF indicate a gradual error reduction for the first 4 landmarks. The results presented in this paper will provide an essential guideline on the experiment design for feature-based robot self-localization.
