Medical image fusion technique plays an an increasingly critical role in many clinical applications by deriving the complementary information from medical images with different modalities. In this paper, a medical image fusion method based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is proposed. In our method, a siamese convolutional network is adopted to generate a weight map which integrates the pixel activity information from two source images. The fusion process is conducted in a multi-scale manner via image pyramids to be more consistent with human visual perception. In addition, a local similarity based strategy is applied to adaptively adjust the fusion mode for the decomposed coefficients. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve promising results in terms of both visual quality and objective assessment.

Scientific workflows have become a popular computational model in a variety of application domains, such as astronomy, material science, physics, and biology. As scientific applications are moving to the cloud to take advantage of the elasticity and service level agreement of resources, there has been a number of recent research efforts on cloud-based workflow systems that support various types of performance guarantees under resource cost constraints. However, most of the related work often requires advanced knowledge about workflow structures to perform scheduling and resource optimization. In addition, existing workflow systems usually employ a monolithic approach in workflow implementation and execution, which makes them inefficient in dealing with heterogeneous types of workflows. In this paper, we present MONAD, a self-adaptive micro-service infrastructure for heterogeneous scientific workflows. Specifically, our micro-service architecture helps improve the flexibility of workflow composition and execution, and enables fine-grained scheduling at task level, considering task sharing across different workflows. In addition, we employ a feedback control approach with artificial neural network-based system identification to provide resource adaptation without any advanced knowledge of workflow structures. Our evaluation on multiple realistic heterogeneous workflows demonstrates that our system is robust and efficient in dealing with dynamic scientific workloads.

The paper presents an approach to calibration of inertial measurement units (IMU) for space application based on hemispherical resonator gyroscopes without accelerometers on a two-axis calibration turntable. The conventional sensor instrumental errors include bias and scale factor, temperature variations of the factors above and misalignment of sensitive axes. Also, additional quantities associated with the alignment error of the IMU to the turntable are to be estimated along with the parameters of sensor error model. Traditional methods of calibration usually involve different special set of operations for every parameter to be resolved. The main idea of the proposed approach is to avoid the requirement of any rigorous complicated sequence of operations in calibration experiment, and make the calibration procedure uniform, simple and non-strict to a feasible extent. The work is primarily focused on analysis of observability in the underlying estimation problem. The approach under consideration has previously proved its efficiency for traditional 6-axis inertial measurement units of different accuracy grades in real applications. The results of our study show that for a 3-axis gyro assembly all desired quantities, including conventional sensor error parameters, temperature variation coefficients and misalignment between turntable and sensor assembly, can be estimated simultaneously in one simple calibration experiment.

Stereo image processing is one of the most demanding tasks in the field of 3D computer vision and robot vision requiring high-performance computing capabilities within embedded systems. Real-time constraints for autonomous vehicles such as humanoid robots, lead to hardware acceleration approaches for high resolution stereo imaging in human-like vision systems, where commonly FPGA device are employed to handle very high sensor data rates. This work presents a real-time smart stereo camera system implementation resembling the full stereo processing pipeline in a single FPGA device. We introduce the novel memory optimized stereo processing algorithm "Sparse Retina Census Correlation" (SRCC) that embodies a combination of two well established window based stereo matching approaches. We have leveraged a Sum of Absolute Difference (SAD) of Sobel-filtered images and a Sum of Hamming Distance (SHD) using a modified Retina based Census Transform for increased robustness to lighting variations and for high accuracy. A color rectification module has been implemented to cope with the high frame rate of the stereo pipelining calculating image transformations and rectified pixel coordinates in real-time using parameters for camera intrinsic, image rotation, image distortion and image projection. In addition multiple post-processing algorithms like texture filtering, uniqueness filtering, speckle removal and disparity to depth conversion have been implemented to further enhance the output results. The presented smart camera solution has demonstrated real-time stereo processing of 1280x720 pixel depth images with 256 disparities on a Zynq XC7Z030 FPGA device at 60fps. Due to the universal USB3.0 UVC interface and the onboard depth calculation it is a replacement for RGBD 3D-Sensors with improved image quality and outdoor performance. The camera can easily be used in conjunction with ROS-enabled robots and in automotive or industrial applications.

The upgrade of the LHCb experiment at CERN envisions a Data Acquisition and Event Filtering system that captures 100% of the data generated by the various subdetectors, which measure with great precision the 40 million collisions per second of protons in CERN's Large Hadron Collider. The sensor readings result in about 40 Tbit/s of data, which need to be processed on a large computer farm. Since the computation on CPUs, as it is currently done, does not scale well, it is necessary to accelerate a good portion of the code to meet the computational demands of the proposed system. We are therefore looking for means to accelerate the most time-consuming parts of the event-filtering code. The Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors are one of the component detectors of the overall LHCb experiment. The Cherenkov photon that hits the detector are processed to determine the track of the original particle that caused these photons. The particle velocity and mass, derived from the Cherenkov angle, is used to identify the particle. The entire RICH photon reconstruction algorithm accounts for 50% of the second High Level Trigger (HLT) process and Cherenkov angle reconstruction comprises about 20% of the RICH and is a good candidate for acceleration. An OpenCL implementation of Cherenkov angle reconstruction algorithm that calculates the trajectory of Photons in the RICH detector was developed. The paper looks at the results of the OpenCL implementation of the algorithm on the Nallatech 385 card with Altera Strati x V FPGA, Nvidia GeForce GTX 690 GPU card and the Intel Xeon processor for comparison. While the two GPUs are 3.6X faster than a single FPGA, the FPGA is 3.4X better than two GPUs and 6.6X better than two multicore CPUs when energy efficiency is factored. Although significant speedup of computation was achieved on all the above architectures by using OpenCL, a good portion of the gain was lost due to the overhead of data transfer and parallelism. Android has provided dynamic code loading (DCL) since API level one. DCL allows an app developer to load additional code at runtime. DCL raises numerous challenges with regards to security and accountability analysis of apps. While previous studies have investigated DCL on Android, in this paper we formulate and answer three critical questions that are missing from previous studies: (1) Where does the loaded code come from (remotely fetched or locally packaged), and who is the responsible entity to invoke its functionality? (2) In what ways is DCL utilized to harden mobile apps, specifically, application obfuscation? (3) What are the security risks and implications that can be found from DCL in off-the-shelf apps? We design and implement DYDROID, a system which uses both dynamic and static analysis to analyze dynamically loaded code. Dynamic analysis is used to automatically exercise apps, capture DCL behavior, and intercept the loaded code. Static analysis is used to investigate malicious behavior and privacy leakage in that dynamically loaded code. We have used DYDROID to analyze over 46K apps with little manual intervention, allowing us to conduct a large-scale measurement to investigate five aspects of DCL, such as source identification, malware detection, vulnerability analysis, obfuscation analysis, and privacy tracking analysis. We have several interesting findings. (1) 27 apps are found to violate the content policy of Google Play by executing code downloaded from remote servers. (2) We determine the distribution, pros/cons, and implications of several common obfuscation methods, including DEX encryption/loading. (3) DCL's stealthiness enables it to be a channel to deploy malware, and we find 87 apps loading malicious binaries which are not detected by existing antivirus tools. (4) We found 14 apps that are vulnerable to code injection attacks due to dynamically loading code which is writable by other apps. (5) DCL is mainly used by third-party SDKs, meaning

Changes in flow shear stress are sensed by cell membrane receptors transferring to intracellular area that lead to physical and chemical alterations. This process is defined as mechonatransduction process that is essential for maintaining the development of cells and tissues. Vascular endothelial cells and blood cells in circulation subjected to shear stress on different levels in different regions of vascular network. There have been platforms those are fabricated by different techniques to perform in vitro cell culture experiments to reveal shear stress effects on cells. Microchannels based on PDMS fabricating by soft lithography technique have been favourable in mechanobiological applications as using for cell culture platforms, especially shear stress studies. Normally, physiological shear stress levels for veins are between 10 to 70 dynes/cm(2) (1-7 Pa) and for arteries between 1 to 6 dynes/cm(2) (0.1-0.7 Pa). In this study, a circular system has been set up by microfluidic pump to mimic physiological environment of monocyte cells for monitoring structural changes at high level shear stress. Shear stress at 12 Pa more than physiological level simulated by CFD has been applied on 8x10(6)/10 mL HL-60 cells under 3600 L/min. during 3 hours. Cells were passed through cavitated PDMS channel. Then, cells were stained with Phalloidin-TRITC and counterstained with DAPI to monitoring fluorescence of F-actin molecules.

This paper presents an FPGA-based smart band for health monitoring applications in Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs). The FPGA-based smart band design embeds a softcore processor and its allocated SRAM block, and auxiliary modules. This paper introduces a novel scheme for full initial configuration and Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration through the WLAN network on the FPGA. Transient faults including Single Event Upsets (SEU) and Multiple Event Upsets (MEU) could be mitigated using fault tolerant techniques on FPGA depending on the working environment. The processor is protected by a watchdog while the memory is protected by SEC-DED. Two working environments are studied: a normal environment and a harsh environment. Transient faults in the auxiliary modules are overcome using TMR and 5MR in the normal and harsh environment, respectively. The availability of the system has been quantified using Markov Models and a case study is presented. © 2017 IEEE.

Power stations produce supply at a particular frequency in a given locale. This frequency varies with supply and demand in the grid. This paper mainly focuses on maintaining the optimum frequency in the grid by inducing the users to cope up with the demand by altering the energy's price. With the correlation between the supply-demand, price (for power consumption) is obtained using Fuzzy logic. The logic is substantiated with simulation through Simulink. The fuzzy logic is then transmuted to Verilog code and is synthesized using Vivado tool. Succeedingly it is implemented in Xilinx field Programming Gate Array (FPGA).
