The special issue of the Future Generation Computer Systems journal published the extended version of four papers selected from the 16 full papers presented at the international Symposium on grid computing, High-Performance and Distributed applications GADA 2007. The main goal of the GADA series of conferences, was to bring together researchers, developers, professionals, and graduates working to advance research and development in the areas of grid computing and distributed systems and applications. Data access, management and analysis within grid and distributed high performance environments constituted a main part of the conference to highlight the main goal. The first paper presented a comprehensive model for a fully parallelized On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) server. Another team of researchers showed the parallelization of two training algorithms of a multilayer perceptron artificial neural net in the second paper.

In this paper we propose a systematic approach to performance analysis of workflow applications on the grid. We introduce an ideal model for the workflow execution time and explain the difference to the real measured times based on a hierarchy of performance overheads for grid computing. We describe how to systematically measure and compute the overheads from individual activities to entire workflow applications. We adjusted well-known parallel processing metrics to the scope of grid computing, comprising speedup and efficiency. We have implemented and largely automatised our analysis approach in the context of the ASKALON grid application development and computing environment. We present experimental results that show detailed overhead analysis of two real-world workflow applications executed in a national grid environment.

The execution of parallel applications, using grid computing, requires an environment that enables them to be executed, managed, scheduled and monitored. The execution environment must provide a processing model, consisting of programming and execution models, with the objective appropriately exploiting grid computing characteristics. This paper proposes a parallel processing model, based on shared variables for grid computing, consisting of an execution model that is appropriate for the grid and a CPAR parallel language programming model. The environment is designed to execute parallel applications in grid computing, where all the characteristics present in grid computing are transparent to users. The results show that this environment is an efficient solution for the execution of parallel applications.

dIn a desktop grid computing environment, voluntary desktops (i.e., resource providers) are free to leave and join independently in the middle of execution. To develop a reliable desktop grid computing system, a scheduling scheme must consider the dynamic nature (i.e., volatility) of volunteers. Existing desktop grid computing systems, however, do not consider volatility in their scheduling procedures. As a result, job execution is often suspended, resulting in delayed completion time and degraded performance and reliability. To solve these limitations, we propose the Markov Job Scheduler based on Availability (MJSA) supporting three advanced scheduling schemes: OPTIMIST, PESSIMIST, and REALIST. These scheduling schemes are based on stochastic modeling of desktop availability. In the OPTIMIST scheme, in which time constraints are relaxed, the MJSA provides reliable resource selection at low cost. In the PESSIMIST scheme, where time constraints are rigid, the MJSA enables stable makespan in strictly time. Finally, in the REALIST scheme, where time constraints are only partially relaxed, the MJSA provides enhanced cost efficiency. In conclusion, the MJSA improves performance and reliability by adapting the appropriate scheduling scheme when selecting volunteers according to the needs of applications. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The current grid technology can be viewed as an extension or application of this framework to create a more generic resource sharing context. grid technology is widely emerging. Still, there is an eminent shortage of real grid users, due to the absence of two important catalysts. A widely accepted vision on how applications can substantially benefit from grids, and second a toolkit of higher-level grid services, tailored to application needs. The grid aims to provide fundamentally new capabilities for applications to exploit the power of grid computing. We present a architecture of grid, middleware and its application technology, a large-scale, grid-empowered applications and then discuss grid general architecture and its grid application. We illustrate how applications can be grid-enabled and discuss grid as an tool for computing services.
