The implementation of large-scale Monte Carlo computation on the grid benefits front state-of-the-art approaches to accessing a computational grid and requires scalable parallel random number generators with good quality. The Globus software toolkit facilitates the creation and utilization of a computational grid for large distributed computational jobs. The Scalable Parallel Random Number Generators (SPRNG) library is designed to generate practically infinite number of random number streams with favorable statistical properties for parallel and distributed Monte Carlo applications. Taking advantage of the facilities of the Globus toolkit and the SPRNG library, we implemented a tool we refer to as the grid-computing Infrastructure for Monte Carlo Applications (GCIMCA). GCIMCA implements services specific to grid-based Monte Carlo applications, including the Monte Carlo subtask schedule service using the N-out-of-M strategy, the facilities of application-level checkpointing, the partial result validation service, and the intermediate value validation service. Based on these facilities, GCIMCA intends to provide a trustworthy grid-computing infrastructure for large-scale and high-performance distributed Monte Carlo computations.

In recent years, Global and gridcomputing emerge as two powerful technology trends. In this paper, we compare these two approaches of distributedcomputing. First, we present a definition for Global computing that accentuates the key point in this trend. This key point distinguishes Global computing from other trends and covers many such systems. Second, we contrast two approaches in general characteristics. Then, by comparing them in technical issues, we show that the key point in our definition of Global computing is the main source of many technical differences between these methods. Finally, we present our opinion about the probable future of Global and gridcomputing.

We describe a content-based distributed notification service for Publish/Subscribe communication that implements the WS-Notification (WSN) standards. The notification service is built on a messaging framework that supports an associative rendezvous messaging mechanism on a structured overlay of peer nodes. The entire system acts as a notification broker, so that notification publishers and subscribers outside the network can achieve loosely coupled communication through a decentralized, scalable service, by interacting with any of the broker peers. Self-optimizing mechanisms are built into the framework to reduce notification traffic within as well as from the peer network. We describe the framework and its performance and evaluate the effectiveness of the self-optimizing mechanisms. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In large-scale computational or P2P grids, discovery of heterogeneous resources as a working group is crucial to achieving scalable performance. This paper presents a hierarchical cycloid overlay (HCO) architecture with resource clustering and discovery algorithms for efficient and robust resource discovery in wide-area distributedgrid systems. We establish program/data locality by clustering resources based on their physical proximity and functional matching with user applications. We further develop randomized probing and cluster-token forwarding algorithms. The novelty of the HCO scheme lies in low overhead, fast speed and dynamism resilience in multi-resource discovery. The paper presents the HCO framework, new performance metrics, and simulation experimental results. This HCO scheme compares favorably with other resource management methods in static and dynamic grid applications. In particular, it supports efficient resource clustering, reduces communications cost, and enhances resource discovery success rate in promoting large-scale distributed supercomputing applications.

grid simulation tools provide frameworks for simulating application scheduling in various grid infrastructures. However, while experimenting with many existing tools, we have encountered two main shortcomings: (i) there are no tools for generating workloads, resources and events;(ii) it is difficult and time consuming to model different grid levels, i.e. resource brokers, and local level scheduling systems. In this paper we present the grid Scheduling Simulator (GSSIM), a framework that addresses these shortcomings and provides an easy-to-use grid scheduling framework for enabling simulations of a wide range of scheduling algorithms in multi-level, heterogeneous grid infrastructures. In order to foster more collaboration in the community at large, GSSIM is complemented with a portal (http://***) that provides a repository of grid scheduling algorithms, synthetic workloads and benchmarks for use with GSSIM.

It is the purpose of this paper to present some practical security issues related to National High Performance computing Environment (NHPCE), the computational grid. Based on the security requirements of NHPCE we discuss some existing distributed security technologies we used and point out why they are not enough. Then the key issues of NHPCE and its corresponding solutions to these problems are analyzed. Lastly we put forward our final solution.(8).

As grid software and grid applications grow in size and complexity, memory usage experiment and analysis have become more and more essential. In this paper, we investigate an Anti-TestCase-based approach to analyze the memory usage of GOS core software, and present a set of Anti-TestCases, which describe predefined memory problems of GOS core. This approach is applied with a set of automated test tools in controlled experiments including basic memory requirements, memory errors and memory usage of GOS core. With the experiment and analysis, we find several memory usage results of GOS core and they are valuable for other systems based on JVM, Tomcat and Axis. We also give some JVM memory configuration suggestions for better performance in the production server.
